Open Box Desktop

 Open Box Desktop

Openbox is a highly configurable, next generation window manager with extensive standards support.

The *box visual style is well known for its minimalistic appearance. Openbox uses the *box visual style, while providing a greater number of options for theme developers than previous *box implementations. The theme documentation describes the full range of options found in Openbox themes.

Openbox lets you bring the latest applications outside of a full desktop environment. Most modern applications have been written with GNOME and KDE in mind. With support for the latest freedesktop.org standards, as well as careful adherence to previous standards, Openbox provides an environment where applications work the way they were designed to.

Openbox is a highly configurable window manager. It allows you to change almost every aspect of how you interact with your desktop and invent completely new ways to use and control it. It can be like a video game for controlling windows. But Openbox can also be kept extremely simple, as it is in the default setup, meaning that it can suit just about anybody. Openbox gives you control without making you do everything.

Openbox makes desktop environments better. By running Openbox inside the GNOME or K desktop environments, you can combine their ease and functionality with the power of Openbox. Your desktop becomes cleaner and faster, and is in your control, when you use Openbox.Take a look at the getting started guide and change how you manage your desktop.

It has support for Gnome and KDE.

Use Synaptic Package Manager to Install it.

It is not an application but a desktop environment with many apllications bound to it.

More importantly it consumes (dark background) very little RAM and by right clicking the mouse, I can get to my favourite AbiWord and I am editing this piece using AbiWord.

Importantly, it has Falkon Browser which has integrated with our WiFi automatically ( I think WiFi is bundled into the browser).

I have this bundle insalled in Ubuntu 24.04.

Thank YOU to Everybody!

JWM is the lightest but has no Internet or Office (AbiWord) packages and I think the developers should include those to applications.

I am going to Flushbox next.

Blackbox is X11 Desktop.

Text Editors in Linux and Word Processors

Text Editors in Linux and Word Processors

Even though, I promote AbiWord and quite comfortable with it, publishing my books at Amazon books, there are lot of them, from Tiny to Majestic.
Tiniest one with b graphical interface is Bluefish which I loved during during my initiation (borrowing a word from Italian Mafia) but I settled down with small to mid level Abiword. I published my first book of 100 pages using AbiWord and never looked back since (it started as a command line utility with only 28 MBs when running) it has the best page layout features coming, from command line background.

1. Let me dispense with LateX which nobody uses now which had the best page layout.

2. LyX is a derivative from LateX text Editor and very difficult to handle unless you are a Wizard in Coding and Command line (which I have forgotten) and it has no page layout features. It has added lot of new features including graphic features of lining up to a chapter in a big book
I believe it has Macros!
When I finish with my books I will revisit LyX.

3. This is for Python Guys!
Bluefish has both Python 2 and 3.
It has PHP for porting to another location.
It is pretty good and I have used it when learning nuts and bolts of Linux but I never tried Python.
I consider using Python for developing a few applications (may be tiny text editor) Android Studio.
I have found Ubuntu having a Audio Studio!
That is a trend today.

I have done with the Bluefish, Abiword and LyX let me handle the others.
It may not be comprehensive.

4. First that come to my mind, is XOurnal ++.
It was developed by a American kid under 18.
It has another edition where one can use hand written stuff  (I have not used it since my hand writing and graphic skills are nothing to boast about).

5. LibreOffice the bulkiest coming from France and I begin to hate it.
OpenOffice, its predecessor, I used it for my Thesis writing, which was light weight and fantastic. I used it to remove Microsoft Macros from my thesis prepared in Office 98 (could not get my thesis in to the University Standard).

5. Focus Writer is another

6. OpenOffice, I think is proprietary.

Brain Train Dream

Brain Train Dream

This is one of my dreams published in book form.

This is reproduced as the last chapter of my book Meditation Business

This dream was short but I think it is appropriate,I should reproduce it here since it is relevant to Metta Meditation and Heavenly Aboard.

I was in trouble in my dream.

I was trying to find a toilet for number one job and not number two. I was on a holiday of some sort,   in an unfriendly remote corner of the earth.

Place looked like Alaska.

It would have been in Alberta or on Alaska looking for tar sand or rare metal deposits. Trouble was I could not find a self contained cubicle to do that job out of sight and out of open view.

Finally, I found a place without the roof with the squatting plate made of marble.

A posh site without bystanders and also without a roof in open air.

It got to be Alaska not Alberta.

Then I sat down but its size and proportions made me to realize it was not made for a man of my size but probably for an elephant. The second problem was to find a little plastic container to fetch some water to do the final bottom clean up. Unlike, the guys and girls of the West who use paper toilet, we still prefer the wet toiletry and getting wet in the process.

Finally, I found a thrash can, in actual fact three in number placed one on top of the other.

It looked like a vessel left by a pre-historic man and it was almost fossilized.

I dug it up from the snow.

I was finally ready armed to the teeth as it were, now ready for the plunge or the big drop.

I was figuring out how to make a simple do and make a quick exit before somebody click an ireport on my exploits on a hitherto barren land and send it to CNN for a quick Flash of News.

But I was rudely interrupted by a guy who looked to me like 5 star janitor wearing something which looked like a spacesuit which I had never seen before.

It was bright and in golden colour.

Other strange thing was he looked like he never touched the ground as if he was levitating.

He splashed a golden creamy stuff which looked like egg shampoo to me on the marble floor and then splashed double that amount of the stuff on the bath tub / tiny water pool and turned round in a flash towards me, telling me, that I should position my feet on the correct alignment marked by what looked like to me an elephant footprint and to my amazement he was trying to positioned my feet (not my bottoms on the correct trajectory).

It was a strange feeling.

I was trying my bottoms in correct alignment, in this massive cesspit but he was trying to get my feet aligned and he was about to hold one of my feet and I felt ticklish and embarrassed.

Next thing I knew was I was holding my right foot with one hand and the other hand on my bottoms to see whether I had some accidental runs in my sleep.

Neither.

Woke up but not in need for any voids.

In any case in my half dreamy state I walked to the toilet and tried the big one.

No void.

Tried the number two, a tiny dribble.

I soon realized I was only dreaming and quickly went back to my bed for the second round of my sleep without any interruption by  dreams or mosquitoes.

I was hard pressed for a good dream and Maha Brahma would be equally pleased to interpret this in any case, decided to email it when I am up and in correct senses.

True to his character he answered the dream in kind.

I asked him was there a second part.

NO he said.

Is it futuristic?

Yes he said.

Was it Alaska?

NO.

Where was it?

Can't you guess?

It got to be heaven!

It got to be me going to heaven?

I am not suppose to tell that to you in advance.

It was a very dull dream, I reflected on it.

No son, it is a very good one.

In case if you want to come here it good for you to know the heaven protocol, Isn't it?

Yes Sir.

Are there marble toilets in heaven?

We really like marble floors on toilets.

Eve on our final resting places on earth are marble floored and lined, I told him.

The last thing you see before you leave earth and you say good bye to toilets.

We do not have toilets in heaven.

But we have a small area designated for earthlings just before one enters heaven.

What you saw in your dream is the quarantine in practice.

Who was that guy doing the quarantine?

He was a guy working in the parliament in Ceylon.

He was the one who used to remove all the offensive language before entering, in the hanzard.

Is that enough to enter heaven.

Yes.

In that case no parliament MP enters the heaven.

Yes.

Thank god for telling that truth.

Shall I tell you the protocol before entering the heaven.

Yes, SIR.

We have 10 steps to proper quarantine at the gate of heave.

I will gave that in a list form.

OK, Sir.

Protocol before entering heaven for earthling.

1.  First we give Bowel Wash.

2.  Hand Wash and Body Wash

3.  All Food in your bowel washed out during stage one are incinerated.

4.  Then Head Wash

Most of these items are done by the funeral directors, aren't they?

Yes but still we prefer a follow up clean.

5. Then the Brain Wash, washing the brain of rubbish that are put on you by the psychologists.

Under hypnosis a psychologist on earth will tell you that one swallows 3 to 10 spiders a night on an average.

This type of false propaganda has to be washed out completely.

6. Brain Drain is a technique to get all redundant information like

Positive thinking

Creative brain

Logical brain

Lateral brain

One uses 10% of the Brain and the lot.

Then we drain all the psychological theories put on your brain by management trainers on earth.

They are all rubbish and has no validity on heaven.

This is the most difficult part of the clean up process.

Then I told him we spend enormous amount of money for these trainer training programs.

That is not my problem.

But if you can avoid these American programs,  it is so much the better if you consider entering heaven.

You mean to say lot of Americans will never sight the heaven.

TRUE my dear.

What about their M.B.As and Emotional Intelligent Training, they teach in Harvard

They are useless in heaven.

7. Brain Train

Then we train them to think.

After the above seven we start on Moment Meditation.

I was very good at present moment meditation training and since I was very short of memory, especially the past.

But I am very bad at Metta Meditation since, I do not have any enemies in heaven.

In my past lives I have had only a few friends and that was a long period ago.

That is why I am very bad at Metta Meditation.

That is why I asked you to tell me how to practice Metta to enemies.

8. Present Moment Meditation

I do it myself.

9. Metta Meditation.

I actually delegate this part to earthlings who come here.

But when I saw the nice aura around your vertex, I was naturally inquisitive.

10. Train “Brain Train” for other earthly beings.

Then when we get those Trained Brained Guys (T.B.G) from earth come here and  asked me for a big favours,

I put them in a Train and put one of their guys to the control room and I take a break.

These clever guys on earth must get to very good places in heaven, won't they?

NO.

What?

They drive themselves to HELL.

HELL!

Yes.

Don't you realize that one needs very little brain to enter heaven.

You only need a big brain to hoodwink another big brain.

That is necessary only on earth.

Not in heaven.

Don't be too brainy and he disappeared.

Why I switched to LMDE?

Why I switched to LMDE?

This is the View of the Mint Developers.

As the name suggests, LMDE is Linux Mint based on Debian instead of Ubuntu.

Mainline Linux Mint is one of the most popular Ubuntu based distribution.

The Mint team goes to great lengths to mitigate some of Ubuntu’s more controversial decisions, such as removing snaps in favor of flatpaks.

Mint also defaults to the project’s own Cinnamon desktop environment (DE), which is often praised as one of the easiest DEs for Windows users to switch to.

Ultimately, Mint manages to build on Ubuntu’s ease of use and surpass it in many areas.

If mainline Mint is so successful, why create an alternative version of Mint that is based on Debian, the same distribution that Ubuntu is based on?

In short, LMDE is an insurance policy for the Mint team in the event that something happens to Ubuntu or, more likely, if Ubuntu becomes too difficult to work with.

Canonical’s (Ubuntu’s parent company) continued embrace of snaps could eventually be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Firefox and Chromium are already only available in the Ubuntu App Center as snaps, meaning the Linux Mint team has to bundle a non-snap version of both apps.

With the upcoming Ubuntu 24.04 release, Canonical is taking snaps further with plans to ship the CUPS printing service as a snap rather than a DEB package.

As a result, the Mint team will need to package the DEB version of CUPS themselves, like they do with Firefox and Chromium.

My own reasons are;

1. Debian is stable.

2. Its installer is the NEW Calamara Installer.

3. Its Window/s management is smoother.

4. I am a Debian User for a long time I do not want to fiddle with my programs and I am comfortable with Debian.

5. SNAP is in Containers and very bulky.

6. Debian still has Synaptic Package Manager.

7. I think Flatpa(c)k is still based on libraries and dependencies.

8. Box utility lets me test drive (Virtual Machine) Live distributions.

9. OBS let me play music and videos.

10. I do not like daily updates.

I can schedule and configure them on weekly or monthly basis.

11. The is integration of SNAP and Synaptic and same application is not installed twice (one with connection to libraries and other in a separate container) in Debian (I just tested it).

12. Ubuntu let you install two packages (one in a separate SNAP container).

13. Of course, I have Ubuntu as a separate distribution installed in my NUC, it is not difficult to see the differences.

14. What is different in different distributions is the desktops type. Debian has a Live DVD for most of the desktops and one can pick and choose the distribution one needs.

15. Different Distributions have different plans and some of them are heavily involved in commercial activities which include Redhat, Fedora, Zorin and Suse Linux.

Unfortunately, Ubuntu is also involved in commercial activities lately.

16. They either pay or entice the YouTube Presenters to (bend the Free Software Protocol) twist or encourage certain distributions. Tuxedo and Pop Os come to my mind.

There is nothing wrong in this approach for corporate guys with business ventures but an average user buying these product except a USB or a DVD (Windows guys who cannot download an image and write into a USB) is simply exploitation.

There is another caveat here.

Lots of guys and girls don not want to expose their ignorance.

Nobody, in my long exposure to Linux has asked me for an image (I won't dish out my USBs free) of Linux.

I do not ridicule them but if they say their problem is either Windows or Apple, I bluntly say I have not heard of them and I only use Linux.

That save me lot of time.

Besides, I have  couple of Tiny books at Amazon Books, how to "Write a Book" without copyright infringements using only Linux Utilities.

My Ranking of Linux Distributions

My Ranking of Linux Distributions

Let me be honest to begin with.

I was a busy doctor and if it was only ARCH Linux I would not have never used Linux.

I despise all all the Arch Based distributions including Majaro.

It makes the user agitated by its rigid and rigmarole military attitude to Linux!

I think even average developer hates its approach.

I just tested Garuda Linux Live and I going to erase with Rosa Linux which is a Russian Distribution which I have never tested before.

For a brief period I used ArcoLinux for testing purposes.

1. Number one is Debian it has assortment of Live and DVDs.

Currently I use Live Gnome DVD simply because I can add and delete packages as and when I want them. It supports both Synaptic and SNAP (hub).

DVD wont let one update software but let you have variety od desktop to play with.

2. Ubuntu is my second choice.

It has the most versatile GRUB Boot loader ans go easy with ESP.

3. Linux Mint

4. Linux Cinnamon

5. Emmabantus with support for African countries.

6. Puppy Linux

7. Knoppix

8. Perhaps Astra Linux

9. ALT for its Mate Desktop

10. Slackware Linux

Suse Linux and Fedora Linux I have not used for ages.

Freedom Concept of FOSS

I see FOSS is at a loss of $500 for the month of April, 2024.

Please Donate!

Debian does not say anything about it losses. Please help them, too.

They are not corporate entities but crowd funded projects.

Freedom Concept of FOSS

Free and open-source software

Free and open-source software (FOSS) is software that is available under a license that grants the right to use, modify, and distribute the software, modified or not, to everyone free of charge. The public availability of the source code is, therefore, a necessary but not sufficient condition.

Richard Stallman's Definition of Free Software

Richard Stallman's Free Software Definition, adopted by the FSF, defines free software as a matter of liberty, not price, and that which upholds the Four Essential Freedoms. The earliest known publication of this definition of his free software definition was in the February 1986 edition of the FSF's now-discontinued GNU's Bulletin publication. The canonical source for the document is in the philosophy section of the GNU Project website. As of August 2017, it is published in 40 languages.

Four essential freedoms of Free Software

To meet the definition of "free software", the FSF requires the software's licensing respect the civil liberties / human rights of what the FSF calls the software user's "Four Essential Freedoms".

1. The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).

2. The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1).

3. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).

4. The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3)

By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

Linux Distributions Rank by Google Trends

 FOSS Linux Ranking

1. Debian

2. Ubuntu

3. Linux Mint

4. Centos

5. Arch

6. Fedora

Linux Distributions Rank by Google Trends

A guy by the name of Johnson 3 years ago made the following comments

1. Normal people use Ubuntu
I agree but one should use Desktop Version.

The latest version 24.04 has only the minimal of packages in a 5.2GB image. It probably has used most of the resources for improving graphic which is probably is good.
It supports both synaptic and new SNAP package system.

2. System administrators for centos
I now hate Redhat, Fedora and Centos
I started with Redhar 8 and I ended up with Fedora 3.

3. People that love apt get but hate Ubuntu use Debian.
Debian is my base and it has may versions and I love Gnome desktop.I begin to love Cinnamon and Mate desktops.
It has lot of Live CD/DVDs with different desktop versions.
It supports both synaptic and new SNAP package system.

4.  Penetration testing+hacker wannabees (mostly hacker wannabees) for Kali Linux.
Kali is a blood sucking goddess in Indian Mythology.
Linux guys are not blood suckers.
I do not like the word hackers.

I have never used Kali but prefer Parrot Linux.
I am currently downloading Parrot Linux 6 version which is 6GB in size.

5. Windows refugees
Linux Mint
There are two versions, one based on Debian and the other probably Ubuntu.
I have no love for this distribution which does not have many utilities (not included in the original image).

6. Arch BTWers
Arch is too, difficult for beginners but lately Manjaro and ArcoLinux are useful distributions for the guys who know onions on Linux.

7. Cool kids (cool with a k levels of cool) for Fedora.
I now hate Fedora!

8. corporate slaves of Redhat
Redhat is worse than Microsoft windows.

9. cool kids (cool with c)
Manjaro is Arch based but a good distribution.

10. 40 machine raspberry pi cluster owners (overall utilization less than 1% because no one has use cases for rpi clusters)

I have no interest in Raspberry Pie.

11. People so cool that they live in their own 3D dimension + Germans

Open Suse, I gave up long time ago and its milestone editions are a pain.

12. bestiality porn watchers for Tails
Useful to carry in a USB stick but it changes its protocols frequently and I have lost interest in it.

13. ancient machine owners for Lubuntu.
Does not have most of the Linux utilities.

14. people with Nvidia GPUs
Pop Os is partially commercial and it tried its will to penetrate the Linux base with a gaming platform but failing miserably.

I hate O.E.M guys who do not support Linux.

What is not in his list.
1. My favourite is Puppy Linux which I carry in my pocket when I travel abroad looking for new hardware to buy.
If puppy does not boot, I shun buying that hardware.
I hate O.E.M guys.

2. Emmabantus is very good distribution with lot of utilities but it does (version 5) not want to co-opt with other distributions in the same machine. I overcome this by installing Ubuntu as the last distribution that configure the GRUB Boot Loader smoothly.

C- Net to Zero Net

We did not have Internet in Kandy, 30 years ago.
MobiTel was non existent and Dialog was born out of necessity but sold to Indians by our Moda Man and I am slowly dissociating from Dialog due to overcharge and incrementally poor service, wheas I am now supporting MobiTel (until it is sold to war winning Russians under President Putin. He will probably enter our domain certainly when NPP comes to power by default.
It looks like it is a foregone conclusion due to poor UNP showing and SJB gibbering.
They are at logger head both in power and also out of power.
Regarding C-Net it's satellite disk is still in our rooftop garden and Dialoge Satellite by default is disconnected from its drive.
It is in my wife's name and we get a letter trying to entice us (which I have not burned yet and it is in my wife's name -dare not destroy it until she comes home from overseas holiday and give them a call with a Big NO.
Yes I am Zero with all Televisions over 15 years and any one of them including Derana going bust is call for celebrations, in my case!

Puppy Linux

Barry Kauler was the Puppy Linux creator.
He is a dog lover and retired soon after 64 bits came into existence.
There are guys who activated Puppy after Barry and 64 bit versions are available now.
I will update this piece later.

Ready for posting.
Go on!

Tree Frog Revisiting but become an Albino

Yes Tree Frog revisited but has become an Albino.
She seems to have laid eggs and I doubt she would survive.
The same fate befall the tadpoles if I did not come back from Australia.

MobiTel is Superb

I have had few issues with Dialog customer service.

A male guy working in Dialog cheated me and used two of my SIMs and helped one of his friends to use my SIMs not in use.

Worse is he used my current account card to pay his friend.

When I noticed this I went again to Dialog and I recovered my disowned Sims.

He may have thought I was an overseas Ceylonese guy on holiday.

He was not on his desk, I guess he may have been a hired guy for the day.

Bottom line is, Dialog as a company (bought by an Indian Guy) is rotten.

I immediately went to MobiTel and payed for Wireless Internet and they fixed the line in two days.
I said no for Saturday (I was busy) and on Sunday they came and did an excellent job.

This is the first blog post using the new line.

MobiTel Fiber ONT is Superb and I have no hesitation recommending them.

Hutch is also a shoddy company. One Muslim guy stole one of my SiMs and he is still using it under my name. In spite of four visits they did not cancel that SIM.
I have decided to make a complaint in Kandy Police.
But my reservation is as rotten as it is the Police under this regime is having a holiday of its own.
No Action Talk Only or NATO show.

Becoming a Publisher Using Linux Utilities

Becoming a Publisher Using Linux Utilities

I have had a crash course of writing.
Four books after two year lapse and ideas not opinions flowing at a tremendous speed.

I have almost stopped blogging and if I do not sit down and write them, the very next day, I have forgotten all.

I use forgetting as a method of encouraging new ideas.

Ruminating on the same old opinion is not a good thing for a writer.
One gets bogged down mentally or mental block ensues.

I was down with myocarditis on the first dose of vaccination but thankfully my mental faculties remained intact and that made me to go through the rest I needed, since there is no treatment for myocarditis which may even end up in death.

Initially it was fear but then reality dawned on me that uncertainty principle in stock market will fit in nicely with life events as well.

It was not fatigue that made me to go into hibernation.
Having worked 24/7 schedule all my life as a medical person, I needed a long rest, especially because the demise of our dog Zimba put me down low.

He was wonderful companion and I may not write a book about him which was more personal agony than glory.

(In fact I have written a book about three Ceylonese -afterlife- dogs and all three now are in Heaven and one as the Maha Brahma's assistant)

This book will be published soon when I go back to Ceylon for a break.

I have for the past 20 years, dissociated with medical activities and I pretend that I was a PhD guy and not a proper medical guy.

Having worked my last years in the university, that ploy worked very well for me and gave me time for blogging, if not writing.

The corona virus pandemic was the correct antidote and I stopped drinking and loitering in the city, aimlessly in book shops, the coffee and tea shops which were mushrooming in a tiny city of Kandy for foreign tourists.

Unfortunately my classmates are either living on medical drugs and are deprived of alcohol due to their medication or have become alcoholic addicts.

I hate the cellphone and have almost switched off the land phone for good.

The telephone only brings bad news, never good and the rest is gossip.

That made me to write pretty or petty books on alcohol, publishing of books, fact files void of fat, mother nature and about 30 unique guys I, have met in my life including guys doing gem business, union activities, loafing, mountaineering, fishing, vendors, farmers, jokers, petty office assistants, librarians, sportsmen and many more.

Unlike the young days my memory is failing and I have to jot down ideas, in a tiny note book, which I found in New Zealand 30:years ago. and never used but kept it like a souvenir.

I did not bring this book to Australia and I am going back to collect it and enlarge upon the ideas jotted down.

It has all the passwords recorded for posterity.

It has come handy and me forgetting PIN numbers of all the bank accounts made me to write down all the lengthy passwords for my email, except one email (which I remember well due to frequent use), I have forgotten all the other passwords.

I cannot log into CreateSpace account with one email which I have many books published.

Even though, I can some how get to my email by circuitous methods, I cannot get to the bookshelf of mine at CreateSpace.

Finally, I got round of that hurdle and here I am publishing again.

I begin to hate digital books with ugly black and white typeface.

For a long time I used Google's fonts with color to add color to my blog pieces.

I have resisted buying a Kindle and my tablet battery has gone dead and it cannot be replaced.

I have collected quite a number of Nokia cellphones and a tiny  cellphone (this I have disposed) for calls for Taxi or sending SMS and had a problem with responding to the Amazon's text messages for verification of my book page.

I have many SIM cards (15 in number, I guess a CIA guy do not have that many) for my various activities and have to use at least two of them to coordinate my writings.

The keyboard is a problem and cursor point of the mouse jumps recklessly to unwanted places and editing correction to this entry took more than an hour.

Thank You Amazon, the spell checker did a good job highlighting the mistakes.

Life is getting complicated and paranoid in this modern age,

The pandemic has made lot of guy/girls becoming paranoid.

It is not an evolutionary trend but a bizarre  malady of  modern age!

Basic Needs of a Computer User can be Packed in 800MB of Puppy Linux-Vanilla Pup 9.3.3

Well, well, I did clean Install of Vanilla Pup in my hard disk using 512MB of space.

This was something I used to do ages ago (now forgotten) but I followed the instructions and within 30 minutes my 4GB USB can be removed and any thing I do will be saved on the 38GB Fat 32 Partition.

I used my name for the sfs file which is 532MB the size of the EFI partition in this computer.

This USB stick has all the Puppy Linux distribution Isos and other Linux distributions that I have downloaded to Test.

Yes, miracles can happen with Puppy Linux!

I am glad to hear Barry Kauler is active in developing three wheeler Moped (it is not the correct phrase).

What is good about Puppy is (this an old edition) it mounts all your hard disks partitions at boot time.

It does not do any damage at all to rest of the partitions.

The basic steps in  the System can be enumerated in 10 Steps.

1. File Manager (lot of names for this)

2. Terminal emulator (many in existence to command line instructions)

3. Process Viewer

4. Default Browser, usually Firefox

5.  Default Text editor for coding

6. Default Paint Program

7. Default Word Processor usually AbiWord or LibreOffice.

8. Puppy Setup

9. Edit Tray

10. Help

11. Eleven is Exit

All this can be done on RAM and if you are happy YOU can install it.

That is what I did today.

Arkane Linux

 Arkane Linux

Arkane Linux is an Arch based distribution.

Unlike ArcoLinux which I have a copy installed its its installer is bit dicey, so I did not try installing it.

It probably wants to take over the hard disk.

However, included application does not have even Gparted.

I am going back to GostBSD as my carry over USB distribution since I know it can boot by old Laptop in an emergency.

Android Versions

I am Installing ArcoLinux-SUPERB

I am Installing ArcoLinux which is excellent.

I am installing ArcoLinux.

I am not a fan of Arch Linux because of its minimalist approach (one application for one job approach).

It seems like ArcoLinux has broken that tradition.

It uses Calamara Installer and Arco Calaramara is flexible and gives the installer options to choose.

I do not know I have chosen the correct options but I like it giving me AbiWord and several Word Processes.

WiFi configuration is effortless and I am posting this while it is being installed.

I hope it won't mess up my EFI partition which was only 532MB and it wanted 2000MB which is a big waste of partition space.

I have 320GB in my Hard drive and it has three distributions already installed.

Installation is slow and only 65% completed.

Session user is liveuser and no password.

It has Gparted for partitioning.

I use several desktops including light weight desktops and I hope like the BIG CD version of Debian 12.4.0, I can test all the desktop types at boot time.

Additional feature is one can toggle what is being installed at 5 second intervals.

It is still at 71%.

By the way, it let me select host of games which none of the Linux distributions fancy about.

So if its boots OK it is worth the waiting.

ARcoLinux is astonishingly good.

Now I have more than 20 desktops to write about. I am writing a book about available desktops and I was under the impression it is about 20 but to my surprise there are over 40 desktop types and I will select only 25 that I have used during my 23 years of Linux, one for each year and 2 as my overall favourites.

At boot time one can select only one desktop.

Yes it installed alright but lot of fragmentation.

Only MATE and  Xfce worked and not KDE Plasma.

The integrated video card of my NUC could not manage KDE plasma 6.

This is the very reason I favour Light Weight Distributions.

I favoured light desktops and Xfce3 was my usual and Gnome has taken over the flavor out of Xfce4.

This is posted with Cutefish Desktop.

It does not give any office packages but gives a selection office packages to choose after installing the base.

AbiWord implementation was faulty but after reinstalling it worked.

Thank YOU all girls and boys of ArcoLinux (Developer community).

I am installing it for the second time having shed the bulk of unnecessary application and selected 33GB (it needs 30GB for Large Install) partition for full install.

Besides, I can add or delete after installation.

It does not have Ubuntu Synaptic but bulk is installed Snapack.

It is over 70% install now.

Few things I missed.

It lets you install several browsers including Opera, Falcon and Vivaldi which I really value

Root partition needs nearly 20GB and I gave 33GB. Home and var partition can be left small if the hardware is not sufficient.

In my case, I have other distributions installed.

I had 3 chioces of mine and I could not decide on the fourth.

ArcoLinux takes that place and  Parrot Linux and Kali take fifth and sixth places and Linux Mint in between.

Now I can safely say in 35GB partition space Linux can fit in all the Linux applications one needs.

I do not think Mac and Microsoft take pride in that scenario and their selection is very limited.

This is what a community can do for its Own development.

Share Your Skills and extra time the final product is creditable.

STEPS for each package.

1. Key Ring

2. Checking Package Integrity

3. Package Files

4. Checking file conflicts

5. Checking disk space

6. Processing or configuring the package.

Arch does this process over and over again for each application.

That is why it takes a long time to install.

No need to check afterwards!

It runs live installation and good Internet connection is vital for smooth installation.

Most of these facts are common to all Linux distribution installation.

Debiin has its own way of installation but it worries about sable installation whereas ArcoLinux installs the latest if not the cutting edge. utililties.

Password Strategy From my AOL Mail

Password Strategy From my AOL Mail

This is a reproduction over a decade ago which I sent to a friend whose password was hacked.

I forgot my password and reactivated today.

They have Two Factor method now but not long time ago.

Step 1

One has to have one’s own trick for remembering blocks of three or four.

Try to associate them with pictures, names, pets etc.

Your pet fish or dog or cat would have a secret code attached.

Every time you feed them repeat the code (in mind) mentally in no time it get fixed as a long term permanent memory.

Step 2

Come with a phrase to include all  10 to 16 characters in one’s password.
This is the hard part but it can be done.

Step 3
Use elements that one never forgets (unless one has Dementia).

Birthday is an easy one to remember.

Use only two numbers from it, not all.

Step 4
Unfortunately this cannot be used if one is English but I will give some hints for them too.

For Sinhala U Mata Banna, or Muta Mata Gahanna Hithenawa or Even Puke Ariya are good enough relatively used rephrases one can remember in trans-literate content, which the English Search engine might have trouble in figuring out.

From that phrase one can choose four characters (even more if the phrase is carefully constructed) easily.

For English user, one good example is to go to Alchemy and remember few Elements from the Tables.

Elements like Argon, Neon, Nitrogen, Bromine could be used at lib.

Or even one can use pentagon, hexagon, octagon or any other scientific or mathematical elements.

Again one only remembers four characters.

Step 5
If one has ever used a password before which one has remembered with repeated usage, use the same in the middle or rearrange it and put it in the middle.

Which will easily give you at least six characters.

You already got 12 characters now.

Step 6
Use two capital letters easy to access from the keyboard as the leader or the end of the password or leader and end, depending one is right or left handed.

Step 7
If the web site requires you to use an alphanumeric pick an alpha numeral to satisfy them.
You got 16 in all and 14 probably is adequate.

Step 8
Do not tell your method to anybody.
Do not share your password even with your spouse.

One day you may be divorced!

That is real and if you have time read my book on “Myths, Miracles and Marriage”.

Usually perfectly normal people become paranoid after getting married.

That is my medical experience.

It is often the people who are near and dear (sometimes, so called friends) who steal your password, not a rouge who breaks in for quick takeaway and getaway.

Keep the record of the method in a secret hiding place that you only have access.
In case one day you forget.

The best place to HIDE it is your brain.

Not even a brain surgeon would not have any access.

When resetting the password

When you change the password, drop two and take two from your birthday.
Pick four alternative block of four from your catch phrase.
Jumble your original password or add a new one.
Follow the rest as required and one may be able to go on till eighty to ninety since you practiced your own method and is almost specific to YOUR BRAIN which a hacker may not be able to penetrate or crack.

Unless you are one of twins there are no two people alike.

Even in them their are subtle differences not due to genetics but the brain behaves differently, even in twins.

Foot Note
But beware your doctor with a short memory or who is cash strapped who might steal your birth day or the catch phrase that you utter to him every time you visit.
Remember doctors forget their passwords more often than their patients.
They will never tell you.
That is why they record every word you utter and then get the vital diagnosis
wrong.

In this computer age doctors have become robots (unlike good old days) and not real humans.

If they ask you do you forget your passwords

Straight away say NO.

The stupid guy will ask you to state the password and put it in his computer memory which is not protected from hackers.

Even the nurse can steal it, if she/he is inclined.

I trust my doctor does not apply to passwords when you do visit him/her, next time, round.

That includes me too.

I might do that, catch your password, certainly not to steal but because my brain is getting absent minded I might put that in my computer, easily accessed even by a little kid.

Do not worry, I do not practice now by choice not by design anyway.

You are safe with me, my dear.

Linux Mint named Jammy (? Version21)

Yes, I testes Linux Mint since , I had an extra USB of 4GB.

It is 3.1GB.

I begin to like it because of user friendliness.

If one happy with basic stuff, I have no hesitation recommending it to a newbie.

It has Synaptic Software and Snappak from Snaphub.

Snappak is the user friendly part.

I downloaded Abiword in live session.

I am surprised and HAPPY that AbiWord has increased its resources to 1.4GB download and 3.6GB installed.

By the way, Google again (to my Blog post to post this) did not sign me in a Live session of Mint.

Batozera Game Iso

Batozera Game Iso
I was installing Ubuntu for the umpteenth time to get my GRUB Boot Loader in pristine form.
I had problem installing Synaptic Package manager and trying to install VLC I got lot of JUNK.
It took lot of time and I decided to try Batozera image downloaded and copied it to a USB and extraction did not go well.
I may try it not on Live Mode but on a Ubuntu Session and report back.
It is 3.1GB and I had problem extracting it (went into 10GB or more) and gave it up.
This time it is smaller and may work all right.

MX Linux Install

MX Linux Install is bit of a pain even for guy who is using Linux for donkeys years.

I am surprised it stand first in the ww.distrowatch.com list.

It took ages to configure GRUB and I hope it did not miss any of my installed distributions.

But it has enormous amount of resoureces including Virtual Machines.

Problem is I have to install them one by one.

It started as a minimalist distribution and it has become fatty.

I like desktop fluxbox.

I am getting ready to identify fifty (50) types in my book.

Well MX Linux has a Smart Installer.

I had to type AbiWord and it did find it and installed it briskly.

I am going for light weight desktops and it let me select the avaible light weight desktops.

I selected all.

Torrent also I selected all three available including my favorite transmission,

Deluge is  also installed.

Next I am going for virtual machines.

I hope my var partition will have enough space for all.

Yes, MX Linux has done a excellent job.

It will stand as my fourth (4) favorable installation in my NUC.

It took some time locating the Applications I needed but once selected installation goes on occasionally asking for root password (whereas other distributions ask for password for almost every application.

It tells me the image and installation size, too.

I got all my browsers installed including LiBreWeb browser (I am on with LibreBrowser) in one installation whereas before I had to pick each and every one and lot of distributions did not support Vivaldi (96% Open Source).

I have no hesitation in recommending it but one has to have an understanding of how Linux works.

Debian Has Gone into Calamara Installer by Default

Yes, Debian Has Gone into Calamara Installer by Default and is a bit of a pain for me.

I am trying to Install four Distributions in a 500GB Second hand hard disk.

I thought the disk was faulty.

It make a little hissing noise but the fault was with the Clamara Installer not recognizing Ubuntu and Emmabantus.

Emmabantus is no different it does not recognize the Ubuntu already installed.

Problem solved by installing two copies of Ubuntu.

One to play with Virtual Box Utility and the other as my workhorse.

I generally use Gparted for partitioning a big hard disk and keep a ntfs partition for storing Linux Images and Calamara Installer is a bit of a pain.

I can say, I have finished installing 4 Instances of Installation of Linux (two instances of Ubuntu) with 26 partitions in 500GB hard disk and I have left 80GB of space for any future installation or testing.

YES, I can also remove, the SATA Hard disk and stick in a external box if I wish.

Well, well, well, I decided to fill the 500GB to its Total Capacity and installed Debian Cinnamon (Cinnamon is my Favorite Tea) as the fifth distribution.

Checked all of them today and they BOOT OK!

It took several days for Parrot OS home iso to be downloaded.

I decided to erase Debian Cinnamon and install Parrot OS 5.1. It is much better than Kali which is very invasive.
