How to Publish a book in LINUX?

I have to finish this book quick and it will appear soon in Amazon's. Publishing a book in Linux is possible if one cares to learn a few basics.

If you are at mercy of Microsoft Windows you should not read beyond this.

I have just finished page formatting a book of 400 pages and finishing my book on "Alcohol and its Charms" of about 150  pages using LibreOffice, latest version which is fabulous.

Of course, I use AbiWord for removing Macros and perfecting a proof ready pdf file. LibreOffice is perfectly integrated with AbiWord and swooping one of LibreOffice long file with AbiWord is instantaneous.

Producing a big word file is easy but making it print ready is a different kettle of fish. Book comes in different sizes and I will write a book on how to? soon, once I finish writing the books I have already started.

I use Debian 11 for final touch up with latest LibreOffice. Debian does not support AbiWord.  So I go to Emmabantus installed on an External Disk.  It has AbiWord and slightly older version of Libre Office.

I  came across a few problems with getting the Chapter Index.  One can install LibreOffice, Chapter Index only once and once  installed, updating it is easy but deleting it is almost impossible.  So final LibreOffice file is opened in AbiWord and I delete the Chapter Index.  It deletes all the macros in one go.  Once it is clear of macros, I make Section Breaks and Page Breaks and number the pages in the header to make the file print ready in a book format.

LibreOffice has default header and footer and very difficult to customize. Header and Footer can be customized easily in AbiWord.  Once it is done when opened in odt file there are no conflict of interests and one can fine tune the page sizes.

Vertical page size come in standard sizes and I think page cutting machines have vertical limitations.  The width of the book can be made into exact inches but not the height.  After header and footer, page size is an important parameter.

I use 5.4 wide and 8.4 height in inches.

The book can be 7.4 inches in height and 4.4 in width. Width can be made to exact inches, if one wishes. Then one counts the total number of pages for the intended design.

Making header level can go up to ten but I routinely use 3 header levels.

I use big 12 fonts. Liberation sheriff is my favorite. If the book had more than desired pages I decrease the font size to 10 or 11.

Charms of Alcohol

I have finished this book. It will appear in Amazon's books.
This is an introduction to my book on alcohol. 

It is too early for such an endeavor and since I am not going to write a book about our dog Zimba, this would entertain the changes that Zimba has inculcated in me while he was alive and long after its departure.

I say he deserved to be in heaven and little reflection of my life in brief for posterity.

This coincided with, when I decided to not to register as a medically qualified man in the Ceylon Medical Council for over two decades. The reason of that decision has no bearing to this little book.

An autobiography written after the demise of the subject has many missing points and add a lot of exaggerations and delete bad things.

This book does not entertain the type of exception and poshumous examination.

This include all.

Good, Bad and the Ugly.

I tried to find a Clinical Pharmacology book by Lawrence et all, from which I got the basic knowledge of clinical effects of alcohol but could not find a single copy published in late nineteen sixties.

Then I found a book on Clinical Chemistry by Calbreath and that gave a real scientific introduction, including its manufacture and adulteration. I gave up drinking local alcohol due to its adulteration since independence and went for only imported alcohol and very lately to wine. I never enjoyed beer but local Gin and Tonic was my favorite before a billiard or snooker game. I never realized I was getting addicted to even in small doses, including alcohol inside chocolates.

I have weaned myself off, after a decade of trial and effort. 

I never had the insight, I am becoming addicted and the that is the first critical faculty I lost. 

I have never been able to cure any person from alcohol addiction and since I am writing this as a non medical person, I took the liberty use the the title "Charms of Alcohol" not to entice a person who has never tried alcohol but to make it readable like a novel.

I was heavy smoker and I could stop it abruptly, since it affected my physical performance and activities in sports. That effort made me to realize one day, I can stop my addiction clinically not obvious to even my close ones.

Simply, I was a nice guy after alcohol.

I would not have realized bad habits, I have acquired as an adult including violent temper, if not for the reason of enjoying a bit of alcohol.

I do not believe that it brings worse on anybody, it only exposes one's hidden genetic tendencies.

Please do not blame alcohol.

It is the second discovery of man in evolution, after honey.

The fundamental biological agent, the yeast was the starter for the bread industry but it branched much bigger to alcohol industry.

Even Buddhist monks consume it, in Dasa Mula (ten root causes) Aristaya and the Fifth Precept in Buddhism is Mujja Pama Dhattna.

It means little bit is OK and I have not fathomed how little is little bit!
