Debain-6

Posted on March 13, 2011 by asokaplus

I do not procrastinate on the old distributions, I have used.
I do forget when I started with Debian.
May, be I started in year 2000.
Having gone through my old blog pieces it is most likely from

Debian 6 and now I am waiting for the 13th version.

LinuxExtras-Debain-6

In between World Cup Cricket, my work and students examinations, I found time to install Debian 6.0 KDE CD version, in one of my old IBM computer with 512MB RAM.

Unlike in the good old days new Linux distributions especially the KDE craves on RAM please do not ever think of trying it on less than 512 RAM and ideally 1 GB is necessary now.

I upgraded to 1GB.

This computer I fiddled with  to add some muscle (but could not find a SCSI hard disk) and it did not boot up (20 GB SCSI and 20 IDE).

I installed latest PCLinux KDE and it took ages to install.

The one thing that gives me headache in hard disk detection

One distribution does not recognize the nomenclature (a becomes b and b becomes a scenario) of the other distribution and only Debian figure out the architecture and the type of disks.

Sure enough, it did a good job of recognizing two other distributions and partition table was edited correctly since Debian was the one I used the last.

In www.distrowatch.com forum there was so much animosity towards this
distribution which says following Free Software principles and for that principle I call it the God Father of Linux (I did not get involved in the flame war).

I now have a special liking for it since for the first time a Sinhala Linux version has come in to being (it can be installed in Sinhala Graphic format) and that is Debian 6.

I went through Sinhala graphic installer and it selected Sri-Lanka as the location, correctly.
I stopped at that point and installed it in English (my Sinhala computer vocabulary is next to nothing, having brought up in Science and in English) and I could not get Sri-Lanka as a location.

Now Sri-Lanka is reserved for Sinhala only.

This I found strange since we have Tamils and Muslims in this country and many of them do not work in Sinhala.

In defense of the Tamils Linux can be installed in Tamil but then they cannot select Sri-Lanka as a the location.

I decided to use Singapore as the location since Singapore uses English as their language operation.

I think Debian should allow Tamils and English installers the ability to select the location as Colombo.

This can be corrected after installation but this I found annoying to say the least.

It installs the basic (kernel) system and then let you select the installation type that include laptop and desktop.

Unlike PCLinux installation is fast and user and root passwords are selected in the first time round.

I can understand why many were against its installation mode.

It’s partition tool is not in graphic mode and only in writing mode (old habits die hard).

All these irritations are not found in Modern Debian Linux.

The instructions are clearly written for any sane person to follow.

1.Create a partition.

2.Format a partition.

3. Mount a partition with or without boot flag and the job is done.
The procedure has to be repeated for root, home, var and user partition.
There is nothing more to it.

Another point of importance is that it always assume that you are connected to the internet.

Missing packages can be installed with apt get and there are over 60, 000 to select.

Mind you if you do not understand partitioning it does it automatically for you.

Why bother?

Its GRUB automatically select what is to boot and the boot splash is very simple and not graphic intensive.

Because it does things in an organized and simple manner once configured it boots and runs program fast unlike other KDE counterparts, say SuSe.

It has no K3B (one of my favorite CD/ DVD writing tool), or OpenOffice (mind you there is a limit to what can be put in a CD with 700 MB).

All these are simple routines to me which I learned 12 years ago without any Guru but by trial and error.

If you want to learn nuts and bolts of Linux one has to use and learn Debian in its write mode.

Mind you best graphic partition tool is GParted and it is Debian based and it is very reliable and even better than that of Knoppix or Puppy.

Whatever criticism Debian will outlast all its other distributions since its resource base is over 60,000 and may grow up to 100,000.

That is why it had 40 odd CDs and now 8 to 10 DVDs.

One DVD will do the work (DVD-1) for you and they are available in 32 and 64 bits.

I am currently downloading the first DVD and it will take two solid Sri-Lankan days for the download and I will be back with you soon.

Pearl Linux

You Have got a modern Linux distribution.

I am erasing Russian ROSA since it did not boot after 13 minutes, having installed Reborn after it, as one of my five distributions.

That place is taken up by Pearl Linux, now.

Hope it has not ruined my GRUB.

Everything OK and my GRUB is intact.

Thank YOU.

Pearl Linux says NO to SNAPS but Yes to Flatpaks.

It hates Ubuntu just like me.

As with most Debian based distributions the Debian package is the default way that most of the system installs software that you choose either through software managers, Synaptic Package Manager, Gdebi, command prompt or the new deb-get app from Martin Wimpress, the lead developer of Ubuntu MATE.

For a while now the regular Firefox, is installed by default with Ubuntu using the snap installer and that version has been lacking even the basic ability to easily configure your default home.

Although, it is doable on Ubuntu its a pain for even the advanced user to consistently be able to have the new tab contain your personalized links and the number of rows of thumb nailed links etc.

With the switch to Firefox-esr we get the basics in working order Pearl Linux

Firefox and all of the updates on  Pearl uses a Debian package.

Pearl has many ways of installing software including our Software Manager GUI which features many deb packages as well as a bunch of flatpaks

You can also use our other software installer called Pearl Software which is an easy go to for installing the tested and recommended software for each Pearl release starting with series 12.

Pearl Linux has chosen to
disallow SNAP installs (THANK You) by default however if you choose to use snaps you can just remove the config file " /etc/apt/preferences.d/nosnap.pref " then update the apt database by doing " sudo apt-get update".

Final note on the ways you may install software by default on Pearl is you may install
App Images as well. Most App Images integrate into the menus automatically during the install process.

The premature switch from pulseaudio to pipewire

Starting with Pearl Linux 12, all releases have the ability to switch back to pulseaudio over the new default sound server which is now pipewire.

We do not recommend you make the switch backwards unless you experience issues with the software you are using. If however you have any issues we make it easy to make that switch by simply installing
"pearl-pulseaudio-config". To do so use synaptic to install that package. You may also open a terminal and do " sudo apt-get install pearl-pulseaudio-config ". to convert back to pipewire do " sudo apt-get install pearl-pipewire-config ".

These Debian packages are available on our repository.

For professional audio the clear choice is to use pulseaudio and jack over pipewire and wire plumber. There are plain and simply too many areas that pipewire is not mature enough for these professionals and that includes our studio, Star Studios.

Pearl Linux has felt the pain from what I feel was the premature switch to using pulseaudio to pipewire as the default sound server on most major Linux distributions. For most consumers you won't experience any issues at all and most likely when just using audio to play YouTube ad your media players you may have some minor improvements however for users that require a solid, low latency as well as users of the higher end sound cards and multiple sound cards using jack with pulseaudio is a much better choice due to how well pulseaudio with jack handles all possible configurations when routing applications and plugins as well as recognizing of the many sound devices themselves.

The Pearl Linux Release Notes

The Pearl Linux 12 series is now complete with our recent last 3 uploads. The first to upload was The Pearl Desktop version which is our own DE called the Pearl Desktop Environment, PDE for short. This is a lightweight DE that features multiple window managers including Compiz desktop effects. This desktop is a mix between xfce and lxde. The layout and feel is made to provide a OS X look and feel with layout switcher to switch between OS X and Windows layouts. The last two uploads are much like PearlMATE Studio version minus the extra audio recording software. All releases in the 12 series have our updated "Pearl Software" app which is an app that makes it an easy place to installed or remove most of the software that we feature in this version that runs the base from Ubuntu 24.04 LTR.

The latest release from Pearl Linux is our long waited for release built on the base from the Ubuntu 24.04 LTR.
The first desktop environment from this series is on our favorite the MATE Desktop Environment. It is entitled
Pearl MATE Studio 12. We are featuring two different iso's one of which is a lighter weight one that has a little less software installed to fall under the normal size limitation of 4G when creating backup or respin iso's. The second iso is a little larger and it contains extra software preinstalled including Harrison's MixBus, Carla extra VST and LV2 audio plugins and drum machine plus more. Installed on this iso, (the larger one over 4G's in size) has the correct debian package to allow for the oversize iso creation. The README file on Sourceforge were you download them from contains info on how to make the smaller iso also capable of creating those larger iso's. This involves using a different version of a program called mkisofs than the default Ubuntu based distros have which is inside the package "genisoimage".

The best feature on this new release is the Text to Speech system. We call it PiedPiper. Using the software Pied to download and manage voice models for Piper TTS. Piper TTS makes it possible for Linux to finally have a true natural sounding text to speech solution thats been missing on the absolutely besy platform for an OS which is Linux. And its FREE. On the full version, the larger iso, there is a text file on the desktop called PiedPiper.txt. We created another version of this text file here. On this one we kept the same content basically added a little more to it and if you compare the two of how it is layed out you can see how Piper is smoother, the pauses are more natural.

Now as far as the Audio Production it's alot easier due to the fact we are using pipewire but with the correct jackd2 extra packages that make audio setup a breeze. Pipewire smoothly uses jackd2 when using your multitrack software such as Ardour or MixBus, Carla, or even Audacity if you choose while being able to use audio on Web Browser without reconfiguring anything ...truely plug and play audio.

Hope you enjoy this release of Pearl MATE Studio 12 :-)

The latest release from Pearl Linux OS is PearlDDE. Pearl DDE based on the deepin desktop environment (DDE) ,
and based on Ubuntu 22.04 / Pearl 11. The default look and feel for this release was left to the DDE defaults to
preserve the powerful and beautiful look of the desktop environment itself. The main difference, of course, is the
lack of a top panel as with every Pearl release to date has defaulted with a Mac OS X look and feel. Specifically
the Snow Leopard version of OS X. We of course added most of the Pearl tools including standard look and feel
standards of Pearl such as wobbly windows and the minimize window effects. The main bonus you have by choosing
Pearl to run this desktop environment is the Pearls Software Manager for adding much more software than the App
Store that DDE provides which is also included. Enjoy this release from Pearl Linux ... a bit of a twist from our norm.

Just Released PearlMATE Studio 13. This is the only Complete Audio Workhorse that runs on the latest Debian base.
To have the latest available software for any of the Pearl 13  series of releases simply open up Pearl Sources and
put a check beside Debian sid repository under Additional Software Sources then do a update and full-upgrade.

Pearl Linux OS has just released our first Semi Rolling Release. Runs on the soon to be released Debain 12 which is codenamed Bookworm. This currently is very stable and runs most Pearl packages without issues with exception of the Software Manager which we are still working on.  Installs everything you need to undergo most every computer need out of the box.

Pearl 13 codenamed "Preslee",  will feature at least 3 desktop environments of which MATE and XFCE have already been just released and our own DE, PDE, The Pearl Desktop Environment, will follow within a month of the first two DE's for the Pearl 13 series of releases.

PearlLinux for RPi with TwisterOS Is the only release in the Pearl 12 series which is based on Debian 11 (Bullseye). At Pearl Linux we also build for the armhf and arm64 platforms. Pearl creates releases for the Odroid C1+ Odroid C2 as well as the Raspberry PI 3 and the more recent Raspi4 64 bit ARM64 arch of the Raspberry PI 4. All Pearl releases using these  archs are all great inexpensive project boards.

New release Pearl 11 now out and available for download. Pearl 11 comes in two desktop environments one is MATE and the other is our customized DE called PDE The Pearl Desktop Environment.

Pearl hits 10... version 10 that is and it is based on Debian instead of our normal Ubuntu base. Just released the Xfce 32bit and Cinnamon 32bit Desktop Environments. The 64 bit Xfce should be out within a couple days. These will be the only DE's planned for the Pearl 10 series. Took a while on this lots of headaches and bit of leaning as well. Starting with version 11 in the near future we will continue back with Ubuntu base. And little down the line a Debian Bulleye backed release.

It's been a while since we have updated the website just no time in a day anymore.  Well it's been many years and I feel compiz has earned it's place at least for a while in the Linux community, when Pearl started their was alot of support for completely dropping Compiz. We are so glad to see other distros show some interest as well as much of the noobs to Linux base. Now then, that being said, we all like change right and as far as alternatives to my favorite, Compiz I really like the Cinnamon Desktop. A more Windows ...actually a much more Windows layout and feel.

I personally work with multimedia software such as the Mix Bus DAW (multitrack) on Pearl Studio. Using The Cinnamon desktop as oppose to MATE which our layout points that DE toward a Mac OS X feel The advantage .. no more dodging that bottom dock when MixBus uses every bit of that screen. My favorite developer Clement at Linux Mint is behind Cinnamon and it's very polished workings. I feel the Linux Mint version of Cinnamon is one of  the most solid OS to date... Thats my opinion and I am the Compiz freak.. Please enjoy the new Debian Buster (10) built upon system from Pearl Linux.

Pearl Linux OS has been available for free download since
12/2014 with our first release simply titled Pearl Linux. It was based on the 14.04 released version of Ubuntu. That release was using the XFCE desktop environment.
Since then we now offer the
MATE,
GNOME,
LXDE and soon to come our own
DE PDE which is a DE that revolves around the Compiz Window Manager and uses elements from LXDE and XFCE4 desktops.
Since the release of Pearl OS 3.0 we are now maintaining our own repository on site
The reason I felt Pearl was needed early on was the overall acceptance from the developer communities to allow pretty much Compiz to disappear.
With the Linux platform you may if you choose, to maintain your own repository that can be added to whatever Linux base you choose to build on to maintain the elements you choose to keep active.
Thankfully many others felt the same as I did and Compiz these days is widely accepted.

These days its not that easy  to find many distributions still using
compiz for the desktop effects. Since the start of Pearl over a year ago every release at least has the option to use compiz. When using compiz it does require a bit more of the computer power to run smoothly however I, like many others really do like at least the option to play a little.
For newbies to Linux there is a word of caution I'll through out there, if playing around beyond what we setup as default beware you may end up with a computer that simply wont respond at all.

For this reason we have a file in your home directory called " Pearl-Compiz-Default-Settings".
It's very easy to regain control if you went a bit too far while playing with the more wild effects offered through the compiz window manager.

For many years now I modeled Pearl as a mix between Linux Mint / Ubuntu for the system level workings. In short Ubuntu is used as the Linux Mint back-end as well but like the looks of Linux Mint...actually I love Linux Mint and their awesome developer. Now as for Ubuntu...their not ranked so high for no reason. Very stable is why they are a big part in Pearl's existence. Not to mention the security of the system itself is maintained by them as all derivatives from Ubuntu is. What was lacking was the look and feel of  Mac OS X as the main layout as Linux Mint is more like a Windows layout. Also I liked OS X in the Snow Leopard days so I keep that option inside Pearl on all releases to actually come pretty close to what Snow Leopard was back in the day. I'm not about the FLAT look which Linux has been on that kick for some time now can't wait till their is something to replace that one day. To me some themes are so flat all windows get lost inside each other... yuck. That being said, that's why everyone will soon migrate to Linux from both Mac and Windows and that is the users choice. You can make your own Linux with the tools we provide you on all of our releases. Currently we use wasta-remastersys to create our images.

Rendering In Linux

In Linux,
rendering means turning data (like 3D models, text, or video) into the visual images you see on screen, either by using the powerful GPU for speed (hardware rendering) or the slower CPU when drivers are missing (software rendering).

It's the process of drawing interfaces, applying lighting, calculating perspectives, and displaying graphics, with Linux offering different methods (like Mesa's llvmpipe for software or DRI for hardware acceleration) to achieve this, affecting performance and smoothness.

Types of Rendering in Linux

Hardware Rendering (Direct Rendering): Uses your graphics card (GPU) for fast, efficient drawing, crucial for games, video, and design. The Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI) framework enables this in Linux.

Software Rendering (Indirect Rendering): Uses the CPU to draw everything, typically a fallback when drivers aren't installed or compatible. It's slower but provides broad compatibility for servers, VMs, or older hardware.
Font Rendering: How text characters are drawn and smoothed on screen, with Linux having various methods (like FreeType) that affect clarity and sharpness

Home Network

 Home Network

Time has come for the computers to go quantum.

The way the Internet is expanding 32 characters for a given name may become obsolete.
Leaving “character space” between keyboard characters is open to numerous virus attacks.
Routers can be attacked easily and being a Linux Guy I do not approve window’s easy methods.
In the early days in Ceylon (there were no routers), I had to go to Singapore to get a router for my home base.
Even the University did not have prime time facilities.

Guy who left the Engineering Faculty without completing the Degree stole the passwords of the University Email Service.

I had a university email but never used it knowing its vulnerability and had my own Samba Network at Home and never exposed my critical work including research.
I was dual booting with windows then (not now).
One day, I found my daughter's computer attacked by a guy in the engineering faculty.
We made sure he never completed his degree but all my life I only penalized only one foreign student who was not up to the mark in the medical subject I taught.

He was fixed up with a non medical degree.

The Best Router and Home Network Names

Ideas for personalizing your router name

by Bradley Mitchell
Updated July 16, 2019

What's the name of your home network?
Most home networks have a name that is the SSID of their primary home broadband router. Some homeowners keep the default names of their routers such as linksys or AEFLHB198Z-2GJ, while others prefer to assign a more personalized name to theirs.

If you can't think of just the right name for your home network, maybe these suggestions will give you some ideas.

Rules for Network Names

SSID’s or network names have a couple of rules that are important to keep in mind when naming your network. Below are the 2 main rules for naming your home network:
  • The name is case sensitive. That means, if you name your home network Homebase, then make sure you always type it the same way.
  • SSID’s can be only 1-32 characters long. (This includes spaces, numbers, and symbols.)

Do’s and Don’ts for Creating a Unique Network Name

While the list below provides some great inspiration, there are a few things to avoid when creating a unique network SSID.
  • Don't include any personal information such as names, address, birthdays, etc.
  • Don't use any part of your router’s password as the name.
  • Do make your SSID unique and memorable, so you don’t forget it.
  • Do change if from the manufacturer’s name. Why possibly advertise to would-be hackers what your router is? It only gives them more insight into your network’s security.

In summary, the Indian with the help of Tamil diaspora in England, Norway and Canada have been working on this project.
This Indian stooge Anura has secretly  signed documents without proper approval from the Parliament.

Haruni is using diversion tactics and the campaign for  change of constitution is such an attempt.
A referendum is necessary and NPP/JVP cannot muster even 30%.
They are the most unpopular regime in our history.
Even, the Mother Nature could not tolerate.
The recent catastrophe is the end result.
The current regime is a real CURSE to this small country called CEYLON where Buddha was born with historical records to prove it.
British with the collaboration of Indians planted this untruth.
It has to be corrected.
Problem is Indiand have paid some monks to tore the line with them.
Ellawala Medanada is only one of them.
