SIM Cards

SIM Cards

Most sensitive port once one removes a back cover of a cellphone is the SIM port.

Its design leaves no margin of error.

One needs (finger nails are not strong enough) delicate manipulation.

One who used to do cut down on neonates in Ceylon (before fine needles came into existence) could not master it in my twilight years.

Even, the Telecoms guy (half my age) could not do it in my presence.

He had to go inside and get some help from one who was adept at fine instruments (my first SIM, relatively big compared to ones that are in use today; It was a highly manipulative skill or act).

I have now mastered it with the help of a safety pin, that ladies use.

Certainly a pin won’t be of help but a opened up safety clip would.

These things are now technically called life hacks.

My current problem is not manipulation but vision which is getting dull, day by day.

After effect is lot of Typos and my early retirement from digital work.

I am still adept at NOT touch typing but the age old K.(o), K.(o) System (where is the key syndrome, the misplaced key) with the typewriter; The vision come secondary.

I am very bad at keys (car key syndrome).

There is a simple computer remedy.

Increase the font size to your needs.

One does not have to be a “techy’ but improvise simple common sense solution.

The bottom line is one gets a new cellphone get a guy (not on the counter, counter guys are not techys but tricksters par excellence -hoodwink you in seconds-who sell cheap stuff to gullible and stupid customers!) to install it.

Do not try to reinstall it but ask for downloads which go cheap by Rs.100/= and you have to wait over the counter which I hate.
That is why I say do not have a cellphone but a land phone.

Thank you Bank of Ceylon and Banking Officers

Thank you Bank of Ceylon and Banking Officers

It took over one year for the Bank of Ceylon, Kandy to home in with the fraudulent guy who tried to cash in a cheque forwarded to me from abroad.

Fortunately, I did not have an account and the signature card there.

They rejected the cheque forged by the guy who tried to cash it.

It took over one year for the principal in USA to let me know of the outcome.

This is where I reject the mobile and digital banking.
I knew of a famous Union guy in Sheffield who in a matter of 24 hours got hold of the union money and disappeared into South America, (probably).

The money was transferred digitally in seconds.

So I rejected the offer of digital banking in 1980s and still do.

If the above money was transferred by digital means there was no way of tracing the tracks.

The digital outlets are good and convenient but without a human touch and investigation (simply checking the signature and the National ID) one cannot catch a thief.

The officer who checked the counter signature did know that it was forged.

Mind you after I stopped drinking my signature is still neat and cute.

No shaking fingers or hands.

Mobile and Linux Update

Mobile and Linux Update

This is a bombshell in parts!

Let me thank the Linux Fan Base for visiting my blog site with updates from 2010.
Hope you bear with my blunt (with lot of Typos) approach.
Thank you very much for Gentoo (its name comes from penguins which I love, had seen them once in deep south of New Zealand) users and particularly the PaguaLinux. users
I am no longer Black (I hate black and I cannot visualize pink balls in snooker -colour blind to that shade of colour) Terminal Guy and only use Graphic Install.
But the Terminal with su was fun and absolutely fast execution.
Now I am into little things like mobile cellphone (still learning the background tuning stuff) use and tricks of downloading on the go (tapping into Wireless Zones in my town, I won’t call it a technical city).

Few guide lines.
1. Beware Fire Hazards of cheap batteries (including iPhones and Samsung) and imitation stuff from China.
There are lot of Android cellphones much cheaper, better and faster.

2. Buy a good power bank for use on the go.

3. Use a computer PC U.S.B ports (bit slow but one can sleep while it is on without a fire hazard) for charging.
There is no charging while on the go.
No wall plug charging facility in the city.

4. Do not update the operating system, if it is doing the donkey work and running smoothly. But use a software (many free downloads but with advertisement hacks) that suits your phone for cleaning up.

5. Use a cheap smart watch for calling and save your phone batteries and one can have Bluetooth connectivity.

6. Buy a USB Hub with at least six plug in ports.

7. Have a spare phone for complete privacy and a public (general use and testing software) phone for donkey work.

8. I kept the most hazardous part for the last comments.
All the mobile providers have poor servers to serve you.
They are chockablock with cheap Rs.100/= customers and very slow to serve you with data connection.
I can recommend only Dialog Ceylon for good customer service but they have no outlets away fro the city.
Customers come even from Badulla and please do not try to break the queue.

Be polite to the guys working overtime.

Note I avoided girls, they are sweet talking but doing nothing bombshells.

Guys do the donkey work (the hacker type with wizardry).

They do not wear a smile but good in their technical skills.

9. I cannot think of a number nine but dedicate that to my PC which had done donkey work for over 15 years. I would download 10 GiB in no time while writing an academic stuff (Article which nobody reads. That is why I blog).
Linux distributions long time ago and movies lately.
Problem or the downside is, I use up the data limit and my wife has to use Dialog for communications.
I use the Ethernet for donkey work and just downloaded the PrimeTux4 (French), kids program iso with lot of Linux games.

Tux Racer is my favourite!

10. If you can avoid a cellphone, do that by all means.
Enjoy a good old chat and a beer with a buddy.
Or a cinnamon tea at sky high restaurant.

Thank You Dialog, Ceylon

Thank You Dialog, Ceylon

After many hours/days of waiting and patient deliberation, I got my Singapore cellphone to send a messages to my Twitter contacts.
Even though, not many Twitter uses in my batch.
Everybody uses Facebook.

Less I talk about MobiTel is better for my sanity.
Mind you, these guys charge you for waiting period (of the receiver to answer), too.
If the caller is not responding, do not redial.
Almost half of that is government taxes like waiting in the O.P.D. (Out Patient Department) queue, for doctor to attend to your needs.
This is the only country where customers pay while waiting for a service.
What a discovery for old guy who is waiting for an ornamental coffin.
Must say something about the University, I left on retirement.
The V.C deliberately keeps my money, expecting me to kick the bucket (if he does not understand the meaning of the phrase -is my death) and pocket the left over money.
I am sending a message, saying pay for my coffin and pocket the rest of the money BUT do not come to see my cadaver (my dead body).
I am going to haunt him till his ultimate demise from the present post he is holding.
I won't wish him death, let the Karma takes it effects.
Mind you this was what happened, in the Pension Department in 1970s when my father died.
My mother had to wait for 8 years (my return from UK).
I talked to the director who happened to be a friend of one my old friends (all three are gone and I presented myself in two of their funerals).

What the big idea of visiting the dead?

When the guy/girl (duly signed and certified documents) dies the subject clerk pockets the money at Narahenpita.
The University is no different now.
Late Iver Jennings and E.OE. Pereira must be turning in their graves.
Yes, I will brief them when I finally reach them.

Digitally Signing Off

Digitally Signing Off

1. Blog Spot was my live wire.
2. LinkedIn was my working relationship (though, rarely used)
3. Dropbox was my organizer.
4. Twitter was my fast and impact filled "one liner".
5. Facebook was my antithesis but all my batch mates use it for linking.
6. Wordpress was my entry level of blogging (no domain and private) and Web Page - Asokaplus.

Digitally signing off does mean they become inactive.
But one of my friends said never to say Good Bye to friends but that applies to web, too.
Let us say it is a bit of hiding and hibernating.

Compare Phoenix Linux with Elementary OS

Compare Phoenix Linux with Elementary OS

For me Phoenix Linux has the club mentality of Linux, not the business mentality of Redhat.

Phoenix Linux is called CUB, as of puppies.

I love Puppy Linux and dogs and my affection for Phoenix Linux is similar.
All stray dogs are my love.

Whereas Elementary Os is like a pedigree dog, expensive from the day you bring it home with hereditary diseases or bug fixes in case of elementary.

Phoenix Linux is at home with you from the first live session with almost all the utilities one needs in a Light Weight Distribution.

One has to purchase every little free software from elementary not free at all
It entices you with a beautiful front end and the back end is empty if one does not pay.

I am not against proprietary Redhat and Suse Linux which do yeoman service to server community.

What an average user wants is a functional Linux at first boot up.
It is OK for guy like me retired and have plenty of time to kill.
Young guys need not waste time on configuring and testing a teasing Linux distribution.

Thumbs up for Phoenix Linux which has Abiword (I am writing this in a live session) and thumbs down for elementary which has no functionality at boot up.

Any distribution which has no torrent file is not worth downloading and testing.
It takes ages to download from point to point (not in my case).
I pay a high bill to my service provider, Sri-Lankan Telecoms and guys are very nice.
After series of lightening both the router and hard drive went down (burnt).
TV too, was hit and all are in working condition now.
The lightening hits the gadgets well before the trip switch goes off.

Take care even indoors during this stormy season.

I hope elementary Linux get an electric shock reading this comment.

Unfortunately Distrowatch is also part of this money game and won’t let my honest comment published.

So read the stuff here and not at Distrowatch!

Updates on Mobile Devices and Android Operating System

Updates on Mobile Devices and Android Operating System

Even though, I am a Linux Guru, I am not an expert on Android (based on Linux base) devices or the operating system.

I am still using KitKat old version.

I have many cheap cellphones and a robust tablet bought in Singapore. I was about to buy a Kindle but my sixth sense prevented me.
It works perfectly but never connected to the Internet (virus issue).

There are other operating systems including Java based (which I bought for our servants, without a basic knowledge in English).

KitKat has done me service but with a limited RAM in many devices, its resources are minimal and slow to install and operate.

First requirement is a good wireless source.
Ideal place is a hotel with foreign guests.

I was caught up and restrained due to heavy downpour, I updated my travel cellphone in three hours, sipping a Ceylon Coffee.

I did not change to a new version but updated all my software choker-blocked (SD card was full unto the brim) and deleted the software I rarely used.
It has a Singapore SIM and it was left dormant but got all my Singapore (one does not need to go there) Software updated which I downloaded while waiting for my flight home last time round.
Airport has the best wireless connection.
I tried to update my old rickety cellphone with pretty little RAM and currently in its 14th hour of installation.

If I changed the operating system either it will break my cellphone or I won’t have an operating system running.

Do not be a wreck by installing a new system which I think is Android 9.

My only advice for you is buy a good SD card at least of 16 GiB and update your software on an old android (5, 6 or 7 which you have in your phone).

Do not follow the “whizzy kids” YouTube demonstrations to avoid you becoming a nervous wreck at the end of the exercise.

Linux booting UEFI interface is painful

Linux booting UEFI interface is painful

I am going to be on indefinite digital holiday.

So this may be the last update on booting a laptop with Linux and a welcome satire on Microsoft.

There are three things that I want to high light.

1. One is, this is about SSD disks (not rotatory disks) and my experience with them is limited.

I hacked only two of them and last (the second) one was within the last 24 hours.

2. I am distrohopper, tester of Linux distributions (live and installed) and do not use Windows at all. My understanding of Microsoft is bloated (like any American) image while wasting precise resources doing nothing (very slow to boot and poor workhorse) worthwhile like Facebook.

3. UEFI is pain in the Arxx (I have voiced it adequately, elsewhere).

4. Fourth of course, James has (below) given a very polite (unlike me) account of his undoing of UEFI.
He deserves accolades.

Points I am raising here are SSDs do not understand GRUB Boot Manager.

Dual booting is virtually impossible and SSD is meant for booting one operating system ONLY.

Safe boot option won’t let you boot Legacy boot option nor it will let a Linux distribution boot unless Microsoft certifies it.

What a spoiled mind set?

I have found a way around with my PC.

I bought a laptop for my son with Windows installed.

He lost interest in it, in no time and I used to store my camera software (install camera software dedicated to Microsoft-Linux won’t jack them in - I have found a simple way around it) and photos.

I thought of booting Linux on it (dual booting) but failed.

I removed the hard disk and tried to install my favorite Linux distribution on the blank SSD and the boot manager won’t let me do it.

After 24 hours, I found a solution.

Only openSuse Linux supports UEFI.

After lot of fiddling for 24 hours except for my feeding and feeding my pet fish.

Good Bye Microsoff, the hard disk containing UEFI is inside a gold casket and will rest there peacefully till my son or wife (she has lost interest in laptops) asks for paid booting but not Linux rooting.

Installing Linux on a PC with UEFI firmware:

A refresher

By J.A. Watson for Jamie's Mostly Linux Stuff

Topic: Enterprise Software
What this means is that if you have UEFI Secure Boot enabled, you can only boot a certified signed image - and at least in the original UEFI specification, the only signing authority was Microsoft. I will leave the debate about the wisdom of that decision to others. All I will say here is that this decision had the effect of making installing Linux on UEFI firmware systems much more difficult.
Some OEMs (and their firmware suppliers) have put considerable effort into providing an alternate means for installing keys, certificates and signed images so that their users have at least some slim hope of regaining control of their computers. But in my opinion so far these have been difficult to understand and difficult to use, at best.

 Read also my comments below.
U.E.F.I Monopoly of Microsoft Sucks

This is the first blog post of mine, after I got my two computers working only on Linux, Debian to be precise, without Indians guys/girls working for Microsoft, Meddling with Bogus Updates that really upsets the booting of alternative operating systems.

I did not lose any of my data except the Knoppix 8.1 iso (may be misplaced), the latest.
I found Knoppix hidden in a partition.

But I did make a start up SD Card and the Live DVD.

U.E.F.I. that stands for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) sucks and is the Monopoly of Microsoft.

It intends to suppress booting other operating systems especially Linux.

This is how YOU nullify these business monopoly on new version of boot up BIOS .

I won’t go into minor details.
First go to UEFI boot up menu (press Del or F2 at boot up).

Find csm and change to other OP systems.

Find the legacy menus and change every options available to legacy.

Go to boot up and change options to boot from CD/DVD.

Go to boot up and change which hard disk to boot first if you have more than one.

There are many other changes you can make but fiddle with one options at a time.

Then save your changes and boot your Live DVD ideally, Gparted and prepare or partition your hard disks to satisfy your liking.

Boot up and install your distribution.

GRUB boot loader takes over booting (if Debian Do Not activate at boot up, UEFI even by mistake) seamlessly and YOU own your computer not Microsoft cronies.
This piece is only for Linux guys and girls.

If you have Windows and it sucks do not blame Microsoft, blame yourself for the stupidity.
Read the description below, it a tiny operating system hidden in the firmware and interfere with free software freedom.
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is a specification for a software program that connects a computer's firmware to its operating system (OS).
UEFI is expected to eventually replace BIOS. Like BIOS, UEFI is installed at the time of manufacturing and is the first program that runs when a computer is turned on.
It’s not just a BIOS replacement, either. UEFI is essentially a tiny operating system that runs on top of the PC’s firmware, and it can do a lot more than a BIOS.
It may be stored in flash memory on the motherboard, or it may be loaded from a hard drive or network share at boot.

Linux Update-2018-10-10

Linux Update
Since I am going on digital hibernation due to no known reason (I do not fear religion, politics and for that matter science and coding free software from Linux base) here is an update on the latest distributions I tested.

1. Reborn Linux is good for my taste.

2. EOS or the Endless Os has enormous resources and won’t let you boot other distributions (I believe no GRUB)

3. Swift Linux is excellent and is based on MX or Mephis.

4. Elive has excellent desktop effects but lacks in many utilities.

5. Steam OS is for games

6. Sparky Linux on a USB stick is my favorite game collection of Linux.

7. MX Linux is good with lovely collection of packages but I prefer Swift Linux.

8. Crunchbank plus plus, one need to type startx on terminal to get graphic interface of xFce but lacks even Abiword.

9.Easy Peasy has gone dormant but my old DVD still works on 64 bits computer.

10. Rescue Linux won’t help me to boot a laptop with UEFI interface which blocks USB booting but I found a way to mount a DVD and erase Microsoft for good.

11.Tails on a USB is fabulous not Kali Linux.

12. I do not have a DVD with Kali Linux, why with so many (over 400 mostly in 32 bit in my attic)

13. Hardened BSD only on terminal and no graphic interface.

14. Emmabuntus Debian version is fabulous with more utilities than I need.

15.Partition magic (old CD version) one has to buy but why BUY with gParted in all Linux distribution, which is my first choice.

16. Joli Os is dormant.

17. Osgeo is my map tracker

18. Team OS is deadly and takes over your computer (it did and erased my SSD)

19. But my favorite is Debian with many desktops.

20. But I love Puppy Linux 64 bits (beaver the latest) and Knoppix on Top of the ladder or Toppix.

21. I am sorry for the rest (my memory is failing) of the Linux distribution including TriSequel.

Please visit www.distrowatch.com it has an excellent collection (100), some listed above is missing there, that is why this brief introduction of all the vagaries of Linux.

Thanks guys and girls of the Linux community, both in this country and abroad.
KIT, Keep It Up!

Higher Knowledge of Dhamma or Abhidhamma

Higher Knowledge of Dhamma or
Abhidhamma
Introduction to Abhidhamma
Abhidhamma is colossal and any attempt at simplifying it is difficult, simply because of the fact that Abhidhamma in Buddhist terminology is an attempt to finely describe the working of the Mind.
It is a conceptual framework of “phenomena of existence” of physical and mental formations; i.e; analysis of mental phenomena and their conditioning.
This analysis is the basis for expounding the very nature of existence of the being (Bhava) conditioned by Anitta (impermanence), Dukka (unsatisfactoriness based on impermanence) and hence Anatma (selflessness).
The expression of this at fine mental formation is Upppada (beginning), Thithi (rising to a peak) and Bhanga (dissolution) of one thought moment to another with similar beginning, crescendo and dissolution; i.e; in other words “a state of flux” of mental formation and dissolution.
This formation does not end at physical death but extends into the next round of existence in Bhava.

The mental process is described as a stream (Bhavanga Sota) which invariably accompany the being.
One experiences only one thought moment at any particular time. No two thought moments coexist.

Each thought moment hangs onto some kind of object.
No consciousness arises without an object either physical or mental.
When a person is fast asleep and is in a dreamless state he experiences a kind of consciousness which is more passive than active (note no mention about subconsciousness in Abhidhamma akin to Freudian analysis).

It is similar to consciousness at the time of conception and at the final moment of death.
This type of consciousness in Abhidhamma term is Bhavanga.

Like any other consciousness it consists of genesis (Uppada) steady state or static (Thiti) and cessation (Bhanga). Arising and perishing it flows on like a stream not remaining the same for two consecutive thought moments.
According to Abhidhamma, two types of (conscious and subconscious) of consciousness does not exist.
Bhavanga is not a sub-plane but a continuous stream of existence.
In Abhidhamma the word that aptly describe the state of the mind is Javana (running, no exact English rendering).

This Javana thought moment lasts seven thought moments or at times of death five thought moments. Javana state is arrested by Thadarammana when an object (physical or mental) of attention is registered by the thought process and consists of two thought moments.
The death occurs immediately after the Cuti consciousness.

Cuti and Patisandhi are continuous, within the same thought moment and there is NO room for Untharbhava in Abhidhamma!
It lapses into Bhavanga sota of enormity (of Samsara) which each one owns of his own, with neither beginning nor end.
A super being cannot pardon actions (Kusala or Akusala) of a being or arrest this process.
Though, with death, the physical body disintegrates and the flow of consciousness temporarily ceases yet the stream is not annihilated as the Kammic force that propels it remains.
Death is only a prelude to rebirth.
As Patisandhi (relinking) is the initial thought moment of life so Cuti the final thought moment. They are the entrance and exist of a particular life. Cuti occurs between Javana and Patisandhi, Thadarammana and Patisandhi and Bhananga and Patisandhi.
So the Samsara is the conditional existence (sort of cause and effect process) of beings, all inclusive (not only human but Deva and Preta included) and the goal of Buddhist Practice is to strive for Unconditional Existence of the Mental Culture (not a zero sum game or state) of Bliss without attachment (Tanha).
Way to achieve this is by one’s own effort of Meditation (not just meditation) with clear understanding of the above premises of Anitta, Dukka and Anatma.
Mind’s response to sense organ’s perception of an impulse as part of an object (Kaya/Rupa) of attention sets in a chain reaction.
1. Impulse has to be above the threshold value.
2. That causes to arise sensation from the sense object.
3. Perception of that sensation as agreeable, disagreeable or neutral.
4.Volitional (Cetana) attachment (Tanha) to that Citta (i.e; awakening of the life stream (Bhavanga sota) of continuity).
5. Momentary focus of attention to that state of Mind.
6. Brings to life the mental phenomenon associated with that state of mind (within the Mind or arise from sense organ).
7. Attention to the same until another (Citta) thought process begins.
Upppda, Thiti and Bhanga process recurs in an undulating form in each thought moment of the present.

In terms of the life process, Patisandhi, Bhavanga and Cuti operate, in the ever recurring Samsara Cycle.
Javana is the most important of all where the free will operates and the action (good or bad) falls into either Kusala or Akusala Kamma. One owns or inherits the merits or demerits of his or her action or deed.
Thought process has 17 thought moments and Javana has 7 thought moments and Tadarammana has two thought moments and the rest of the eight thought moments are given separate names starting from Atita Bhavanga to Votthappana ending in Javana and Tadarammana.
This in essence embodies the basic tenets of Abhidhamma but does not include all the finer classifications.
Summary;
1. Bhavanga sota
2. Bhavanga uppaccheda
3. Bhavanga calana
4. Avarjana (focus of attention)
5. Tadarammana (focus of attachment)
6. Javana (there is no proper English rendering of this word)
7. Kusala and Akusala (or Kriya of the Arhaths)
Uppada, Thiti and Banga of the thought moment or process ensues with extreme rapidity.
8. Bhavanga sota.
