I would switch to Emglish now.

I used to land a thundering knock on the skulls of monks who escort young boys after school.
This treatment even Christian Priests received from me at Ampitiya College.

Before, I was thrown out I quitted. I had a big Reason. Mixing the school with Ampitiya Convent was a big issue for me. Incidents there I have already mentioned elsewhere.
I was a violent guy from childhood. No guy could touch me and I would assault with a "mole gaha".
Ampitiya was known for violence, mainly political and based on caste system. However, I had a good ally who was a National Boxer. Give him 2Rupees for a beer, he settles the issue with a single jab. Sanath Gunathika was knocked out in the campus by him. He was from Matale Science College but entered Universiry from Dharmaraja college to Engineering Faculty which a big feat thise days.
He was 5 years older and was a bit of a drunkard but never allowed me more than one beer. He requests me to leave the table after one big glass. I took his gesture seriously all my life.
I was a beer guy but occasionally VSOA and never the cheap arrak. I graduated to Gin and Tonic for a Billiard game to sooth the nerves, we used to say then. I was a reasonably good in billiards but average in snooker. I would not accept a job unless the place / hospital has Billiard Table.

I could not meet him. He left Australia long before I was to come to Australia. I did not do my Ampitiya village trip as usual before leaving.
Two reasons.
No time.
My friend and my relative was in Troncomalee.

Physics was my interest and I was good at it but I choose the easy option Medicine.

Eventually, my uncle left the "Dirum Bodiya Temple".
Little intermission here.
Anura guy did not take an oath before a monk before inauguration.
He would be treated worse than a British administrator of yore.
My monk relative after many sojourns ended up in Colombo, just at the right time when I reached Colombo, General Hospital, in preoaration to migrate to UK.
I used to visit him almost weekly due to his age and medical conditions.
Mr. Gamage, the Chief Clerk of Colombo General Hospital was an energetic man.
In addition, he was the Private Secretary to Senior Premadasa. I had a working relationship with him including getting the release letter to go abroad within 24 hours.
But my additional work was to help my uncle build his own Temple in Muttakkuliya where Muslims dominated.
I made sure, I attended the 3 months Dhana ceremony before I left for England.
I just guessed that I would not get a chance to see him again.
I wasn't interested in Dhamma, then.
His historical point was the British took our last Tamil King of Kandy through this (Mattakkuliya) route to Goa and on that ground it should have recognition. That was the respect monks gave to the king.
Did not matter he was Tamil and also corrupt. The British found many ways and plotted to discredit him with the motive of capturing Kandy.

The Muslims switched alliance and helped the British.

Muslims are historically double dealers.

I cordinated the work at the Temple and the Senior Premadsa was of immense help. My uncle monk's fall from from the prestigious Divrum Bodhiya to Mattakkuliya is relevant here. I would have ended up there, had I joined the Sanga.       I did not have the slightest idea as a young kid, how monks are shuttled between various temples.
It was not easy for a young monk.

My refusal to join Sanga was prudent in the long run.

I am totally against minors becoming apprentice monks and I campaigned against it all my life.

Recently, this Young monk trying to become like Jayaratne Pathiraarchchi is a case in point.

It is an antithesis to me.

I would wind up with the last piece.
When we built our house on an Ant Hill in Panideniya with a large cobra visiting it regularly.
I am deadly scarred of Cobras.
I am not like Anslem De Silva (Please do not mix up with Kandy Mesna Tea man whom I respect very much), who was a parasitolgy department technician and was not a graduate.
He was summarily dismissed on proper charges when I was a Seconded Officer in the University.
When ever he sees me in Kandy, he runs away in a flash.

His image build up is similar to Sepala Amarasinghe but more technical. Sepala is a rank political crook.

We took the challenge and build our house there without interrupting the cobra who visits to drink water during the dry season. I have crossed this cobra several times but it was never aggressive to me.
He comes from the Temple further away for water. Not to lay eggs. Would have been before we built our house.

Moment we finished the house and I got a raketty second hand Peugeot Car with a rusty bottom.
The monk in the Temple send me a messenger asking for Rs. 250/= and a car ride. I gave him the money and told him never come to see me lest he gets a thundering slap.
I did not tell anybody of this incident.
It died a natural death but not really.
When our gradma died my father in law send a Message to the temple for "Mataka Wastu".
The chief monk refused saying that our area did not cover his Temple jurisdiction.
Indirect way of saying NO. I do not think Buddha had such judicial control of the people's land.

We of course had given her a religious ceremony when she was alive. My conviction was that it should be given when one is alive and not dead. A dead body cannot acquire merit is my conviction.
Nobody knew I was a doctor and I pretended not to be.
By this time, by doing simple good things, I gained acceptability in the region and we gained access to a nearby Pirivena with a very Young monk through our domestic aid.
She is no more was the victim of DRUG Shortages. If I remained in Ceylon she would have lived to face the Anura CURSE of the recent catastrophe. She was lucky in a simple way.

Exit when the time is Right.

This apllies to Anura, too.
Time is right for his EXIT.

I was the first ro raise the alarm of DRUG Shortages here in this blog place, long before Kalum Jayasumana.

Continuing on Sangha, my uncle passed away when I was in UK.
I did not know.
My general advice is  call when one is alive. When dead one belongs to the funeral director.

Just before, I left with a stroke of luck I met most Reverend  Narada Thera from whom I learned the basics of Dhamma.
I did not meet the other monk Piyadhassi Thera who had a lot of leaflets in English on Dhamma.
Anada Maithriya thera was an erudite but I never met him but used to communicate with him through 3rd parties for information and advice.

I ended up with Bhikku Bodhi of B. P. S., Kandy but he went to America having written a little note "Buddhism at Crossroads" when Hela Urumaya guys and Champika Ranawaka guys started political overtures.

We are at this point but my current interest is correcting our history with the help of Jayarathna Pathiraarchchi.

I never met Nanathiloka and Gnanapoinika who were veteran Buddhist monks who were of Jewish origin. The B. P. S. land belonged to G. P. Dharmasena who was my childhood G. P.

The building was built by a philanthropists by the name of A. S. Karunaratne and Richard Abeyasekara.

The chief adminstrative officer is Paltha Mendis an officer who retired from Bank of CEYLON.
For any books or leaflets call him directly.
He would respond almost immediately.
If not available he wil get it from elsewhere or print on demand.
I could not get a single copy of Dhammapada in Sinhala or English when I last visited.
That is the interest of Dhamma in CEYLON. Natural catastrophe was impending on this account alone.
Practice what one preaches even at this late stage.
Bhikku Bhodhi leaving Ceylon was a harbinger and he orobably sensed it.
He is an erudite and with no nonsense man. He translated or edited the last Abhidhamma, English copy.

Unfortunately, I left the copy in CEYLON.
l was to return in 3 months to collect them having surveyed the current space here.
Instead, I got the Linux Bible and I am winding up Linux, too.

Trying to Install Elementary OS is a PAIN

To begin with it changed my BIOS setting not to boot from a USB.
I am trying Elementary OS after my interaction with in 32 bit days.
Even, then I was throughly disappointed.
I usully try a live boot.
This is a running commentary.
1. English US as default.
2. Custom Install
3. Selecte EFI
4. Clicked modify
Gnome Gparted mounted
5. I cannot get Gparted in front of the long panel called Select Partitions.
6. I quit Gparted
7. Cannot go back.
8. Cannot Select a partition.
Only EFI was identified.
9. After long pause it went back to English again.
10.Custom Install again.
I cannot select a partition.
Right and Left mouse clicks Frozen.
No respose.
11. Back again to modify.
Everything Frozen
12. Restart
13. No reboot of the USB
Give up.
If anyone using Elementary OS one is one his or her own peril.

File Managers in Linux

File Managers in Linux

There are lot of file Managers is Linux.

Latest I found was 4Pane File Manager.
It is actually is Dual Pane 2Pane File manger. (2x2 = 4).
It is good for redo/undo and archiving files.
It shows the entire tree including hidden files.

In the good old days, I used to look at hidden files and I have forgotten how I did it.

Historically file Managers are 2Paned.

1. Mid Night Commander was one I used, first.

Now they are Desktop Based but can be used in desktops not even intended for.

2. Gnome Files is the good old Nautilus.

3. Thunar is for XFCE4

4. Krusader probably of KDE

5. Dolphin is now the standard for KDE.

6. Nemo is intuitive with web based applications, Cloud Friendly.

It probably comes from Cinnamon or Mint.

7. PCMan but do not confuse with PacMan

It comes from Taiwan with LXDE (light weight desktop)
It looks like it originated from Arch and later ported to Gnome.
It was based on GTK3 and later transformer into QT toolkit.

8. Rox filer is the file manager for AntiX.

9. Caja is the file manger for MATE.

10. There is no file mange for Budgie but Nautilus can be used as substitute.
However, I used Krusader of KDE for Budgie.

 11. Tea is another old time file manager which has lost the default set up but can be evoked into cut and paste activity of a file.

12. PCmanFM is LXQt desktops file manager.

Desktop is called FM.

AntiX was one of my Linux flame in good old days.

I haven't used it for a long time after moving to Debian Gnome.

Mind you now the famous MX Linux is based on it.

My recent encounter came as a result of my recent CRAZE for old Puppy Linux derivatives.

I have collected about 30 already.

What annoyed me the most was the "Legacy Linux "distribution (please do not use it) developed by a guy who used TeenPup in the past and ported a AntiX distribution on top of Puppy making it huge (3.2GB).

It destroyed my GRUB Boot Loader.

In fact, it erased it's FAT boot portion with EXT4.

It cannot even maintain a persistent volume.

I should own the blame, I tried to install it to one of my spare partition.
It took 3 days for me to recover my NUC.
I did not lose a single data file

I am not a one who backup files in the cloud.
I use another Gnome instance as a backup in the NUC computer system.
If my SATA in NUC goes bust I need to find another SATA, hard to come by, and I left two 1 terabyte SATA in Ceylon with all  my OLD DATA over 25 years and my gut feeling is rust is eating into the metal parts.
They are gathering dust and I am not going to buy a new hard disk.

My son in law gave me two huge 8 terabyte hard disks removed probably from a server..

I need to find two external cases to mount them.
