Is Boot Partition Essential?

Yes, I maintain that having a Boot Partition in addition to EFI is essential in Debian Installation.

I just had the misfortune of not having one instace of Gnome not booting.

This did not have a Boot Partition to Fallback to.

I was bit lazy and let Debian decide the partition table.

This was the NUC which my son uses.

It had the Old Debian and it was time for full update.

It did not choose a /boot patition.

By the with only Gnome Debian only takes about 6GB of the /root partition.

All my additional applications took only 2GB. This is with Firefox and LibreOffice remaining as applications. 

I just upped the SWAP and I want to see SWAP is independent of the distribution.

Removed the earlier SWAP and changee even the position.

Yes, even though SWAP is almost essential for Linux fuctioning formatting or reorientating it does not effect the distribution functioning.
