New Wave of Linux Multi Booting Capability

 Posted on October 3, 2010

New Wave of Linux Multi Booting Capability

Most of the Linux distributions are making a culpable offense
by not recognizing other Linux distributions that come from various backgrounds.

In the beginning the
LiLo had problems with booting other Linux distributions.
Then came
GRUB it solved most of the booting problems by booting from any partition unlike windows which have to start from the first sector.

Linux guys have not put this weakness of Microsoft to light
.

Now is the time to highlight why we give priority to Microsoft.

It is unfair in legal sense and open market economy
.

It also should learn how to boot from any sector of choice other than Master Boot Record.

Nobody should give the copyright inheritance of the first sector
to any Linux or Microsoft distribution.

It should be with the customer or the user
.

It is a monopoly
.

Why computer wizard did not expose this weakness to light is my grouse.

They only aggravate the situ by only recognizing windows and dos sometimes and invariably gave Microsoft the first place.

This is a culpable mistake Linux developers perpetuated by
not taking the starting block.

Mind you I was a short distant runner in my prime.

Why give the head start to Microsoft?

I have found only a few distributions doing it right
They are
PCLinux (the new distributions now have a problem not including other format options – other types of disk formatting including DOS), Mephis, Debian, Suse , Mandriva, Redhat and Fedora.

Redhat had the best GRUB including RAIDs .

Still SuSe has the best partition tool, even though it restrict itself to 15 partitions.

Why I do not know?

All the other Live and installable CDs I checked had problem recognizing other Linux distributions.

But they invariably recognized Microsoft by default
or is it fear induced by Microsoft by its global propaganda or is it both.

Why not recognize its sisters and brothers breathing over the neck to have a good start.

Most pertinent question is why Microsoft cannot see with their eyes open wide Linux or other partitions.

They are totally blind to independence an market forces.

Where is universal  brotherhood?

Where is universal comradeship?

There are two reasons.

1. One is boot loader they use is
LiLo.

2. The other is that they do not write a script (copy of the booting sequence in the header files of the root partition).

They all write on the M.B.R while giving priority to Microsoft almost by
default or deceit.

Ubuntu do this, all Ubuntu derivatives including attractive Mint do this culpable offense.

It is time to wake up and put this right.

Suse recognizes only 15 partitions.

There used to be over 60 partitions those days before the RAID and volumes came into existence.

I used to have at least 8 (2 for windows) distributions bootable on my hard disk barely 80 GB.

Those days Linux were not fat and heavy and some of them could stay on 2 GB partition.

I used to modify boot sector by various means to get all running without a problem with GRUB as the boot loader.

Now the hard disks are over 300 or 500 we must go back to all traditions and have at least 30 partitions recognizable.

My current NUC has 0nly 320GB but has 5 distributions running.

Unlike those days instead of Windows I have two of Debian Gnome, BluStar Linux, Reborn OS and Parrot Linux.

I could have had Gnoppix26 if I had 34 partitions but two large NTFS partitions are there to store Linux images. I have 16 Iso images that include CachyOS and Emmabantus Trixie Edition.

Then I can boot Microsoft, Apple Mac and Open Free BSD as part-timers with Linux preferably my own assembly called God Bless You All (G.B.Y.A) (thanks to all the guys including Puppy Linux) and I will throw a party even the all mighty God has directed me to the grave for rest after the party.

Recovery Is Possible or Impossible and cohabitation is a must in the coffin for all of us at the end.

Hypnotist with a Strong Man

Hypnotist with a Strong Man
Posted on June 5, 2011
This is just relating an old story with no malice intended.
This is just to illustrate even a Hypnotist cannot down a strong man
.

But a weak man with legs across the aisle can down a top actor / hypnotist down to the level of concussion.

He was not mindful of himself and how could a man like him help others to be mindful?

That is my opening question.

But to make Micky out of all hypnotists, below is a true story acted by none other than 1st year Medical Student of the yesteryear.

This guy is no more and how he succumbed I do not know, may be to excess of alcohol. One of my class mates had similar problem and he was very successful GP in Pollannaruwa. I just gave him a call and he disappeared.

I did not follow suit.

Today’s students would take a leaf out of this story, who go for some bizarre training, without critical thinking.

My friend who succumbed to this indignation  is now in Australia in full retirement, if he sees these few lines of recollection, hope he gives me permission to bare the facts but name withheld by consensus.

He was a dignified soul in our batch and was not in our halls of residence.

He was our batch representative popularly elected without a challenge.

I was go between in the plot with diplomatic astute to convince the guy that one of our batch mates could hypnotize anybody with a strong mind.

We practice this in our halls of residence when everybody else is  in sleep and the time was well past midnight.

Suffice to say most of the strong guys in our hall of residence went through this ordeal.

On the day we prepared a room (not mine) for our show.

One of us went and pulled the main plug supplying electricity when the go signal was given.

Slowly but surely show went on.

We were dressed in trousers to begin with unlike today and one by one we changed to sarongs surreptitiously and our strong man was in a corner with
hands clasp in warship mode.

Since this was the last show of hypnotism we took unusually a long time with lot of blah blah from the performer.

Then the final signal was given to switch on the electricity.

He was not happy at all even though the performer could not hypnotize him.

Why?

He had being worshiping our backside (sarongs raised up) for nearly half an hour in the darkness and he realized only when we switched on the lights.

(We all had raised our sarong showing our back to him and he was not at all pleased).

He controlled his anger in good stead and we promised him that we will never tell the story to our female medical students and told him he was not the only one who went through this ordeal.

In other words he was baptized in the real world
like Japanese karate men who never take the eye off from the focus of attention.

My apology above is if any of my female batch mates sees this now will guess who is the guy was but he was not the only guy who was baptized (not hypnotized).

So anybody who closes one’s eye for the wish of any gullible performer would go through this indignation by his or her will.

I wish I could perform this to some of our TV showmen /women and politicians in power
who are blinded with ego.

I hope the hypnotist who was the Fall Guy and not mindful to his own steps got the message wide / wild and clear and not to be a
SHOWMAN to poor souls with weak minds.

Tiny Linux Derivatives

Tiny Linux Derivatives

Linux on a low budget and RAM

I was somewhat obsessed with the variety of live CD distributions on offer that I have overlooked.
That is  Linux on a low budget and computers both old and new with little or inadequate RAM.

There are many to list but I will mention a handful of them to conclude my investigation of user friendly
tiny vinny distributions that I have come across.

1.
Geebox come to my mind that is similar to gamebox or media player with needing 0nly 25MB.

2.
My favorite is Puppy which is 90 to 120 MB and there are over 30 varieties.
The last of which I downloaded was
EliteOS (with a commercial presentation included).
It is pretty good.
In the Puppy 5 series, the
Lupu is another celebrity.

3.
Damn Small Linux (the one I use when I am in trouble booting and partitioning) is a beauty on its own with only 50MB.

4.
Astrumi (120 MB) is another good one. I think it is a Polish distribution.
The older version cannot recognize LCD monitors.
New ones are coming by the dozens.

5.
4MLinux-Gamer is only 11MB and and the standard is 25MB.

6.
Voyage is only 45MB.

7.
xPUD a web browser and media player is 65MB.

8. The
xin-v1 is only 52MB

9.
SliTas

10.
Tiny Me

11.
Finnix is another

12.
WiFiWay small 285MB and Standard 408MB (Spanish).

13.
Minix is 385MB.

14. CRUX is 220MB.

15.
NimbleX was less than 200MB but now is bit fatty and has doubled itself to 400MB.

16.
Feather Linux is also another flag bearer (like DSL) of small and beautiful Linux.

Then come to the the partition tools, there are many and one does not need a proprietary software to do partitioning (I have dropped MS partition magic for good but it was the one that saved many hours of sleep (sleepless nights before that) in the early days of Linux experience)

17.
gparted

18.
partmagic

19.
pmagic

20.
R.I.P. Linux

20 is a magic number for me.
In studies of evolution (my personal work) if there are 20 related species in a locality that 20 would circumvent any adverse climatic change at least temporarily but if that figure is 3 the species is critically endangered.

With the same context in time to come Microsoft is an endangered commercial species may be catering for other planetary systems in space.

The host of Ubuntu derivatives that come as
TURNKEY should be the fitting end to my list.

The list is endless and my favorites are
Puppy, DSL and Feather Linux.

They are the ones I have used comfortably and on a regular basis and I have used in demonstrations to show Linux prowess.

Sorry guys and girls that I have only mentioned your names only and they are much better and my GoGo. F.O.F. Linux which is still under construction with my workforce on extended Christmas holidays enjoying other Linux for relaxation.

They are allowed to copy any good idea free of charge or copyrights.

It is an understatement when I say that they are the most useful when one (I am in trouble) is in trouble or on low in RAM to do the tit bits (not bits and bytes).

Bye till new year!

4MLinux

Posted on September 3, 2011

4MLinux-50 is available now.
4MLinux is a miniature Linux distribution focusing on four capabilities: maintenance (by using it as a system rescue live CD), multimedia (for example, for playing video DVDs), miniserver (using the inetd daemon), and mystery (meaning small Linux games).

4MLinux- 2.3 to 48
Small Is beautiful with UnetBootIn
Making Mandriva Flashdrive

4MLinux is a CD/DVD Image and CANNOT be booted from a USB, just like Gparted and Tails.

I wanted to try UnetBootIn on Live mode but could not.

UnetBootIn was the utility that I used to use to write an Iso Image to a USB stick in the good old days.

4MLinux is a miniature Linux distribution focusing on four capabilities: maintenance (by using it as a system rescue live CD), multimedia (for example, for playing video DVDs), miniserver (using the inetd daemon), and mystery (meaning small Linux games).

Features

 Maintenance (system rescue Live CD)

 Multimedia (e.g., playing video DVDs)

 Miniserver (using the inetd daemon)

 Mystery (console games)

As mentioned already Mandriva is good idea badly implemented and slow to boot.

One can remember Mandriva had Globe Trotter and Live Pendrives.

Now the new Mandriva is bulky and difficult to work with just for for fun I decided to make Mandriva Flashdrive (I do not know how long I will keep it before erasing the image).

Steps are as follows.

1. Download 4MLinux all in one.

2. Download Mandriva image.

3. Boot 4MLinux

4. Go to maintenance and click UnetBootIn

5. Plug in a Flash drive (I tried 8 GB Flashdrive) since the image is heavy.
One has to format it with FAT beforehand.
I had 6.5GB for Mandriva and another 1.5 GB as a reserve partition.

6. Give the path to your image (need not be Mandriva or any Image you have downloaded).
Root—> Media—-> Disk—–> Image

7. Click OK and in about 5 minutes you have Mandriva in a Flash.

8. Now to reveal how bad the new Mandriva boots (if you have 1 GB RAM like me), go and make a cup of Tea/Coffee.

I finish my tea (boiling the water to brewing and drinking it before Mandriva booted and fire-up the Firefox).

It did not go to Mandriva site as it used to do.

This is why I am happy that I left Mandriva long time before their split and use 4MLinux for my work on Live sessions and say “Small is beautiful” and promote Unity Linux and (Core Linux on top of one can built one's own packages) its derivative of
HUMANity Musician Edition (currently downloading, the last 100 or so MB).

Unity is one of the earliest Core Live CDs before PCLinux stormed the community with Big Daddy (only in archives now).

It broke away from Mandrake and formed Unity and there are at least 8 derivatives and one of which is
TinyMe.

One does not need to be FAT to be productive when the cloud is promoting thin clients.
4MLinux even though tiny and only 60 odd MB, it can be destructive if you use it’s partition utility without due care.

It only detect the first hard disk and if you select sda1 instead of sdc or /d or /e by accident your will boot Mandriva Live instead of your prized distribution (gone as you press OK in the dialogue box) in the first hard disk.

Please take care and the UnetBootIn graphic mode fonts are very tiny for an old folk like me.

But I did not do any mistakes, simply because I check my actions especially typos now before clicking OK in any command line operation.

I do not use Command Line now.

4MLinux

This is an old piece and Mandriva (not its derivatives) extinct but not 4MLinux
Small Is beautiful with UnetBootIn and Making Mandriva Flashdrive
I do not do any of these now but sleep well since I changed to Debian.
As mentioned already Mandriva is good idea badly implemented and slow to boot. One can remember Mandriva had Globe Trotter and Live Pendrives. TrixiePup64-Wayland is excellent

TrixiePup64-Wayland is excellent.

This is posted with TrixiePup64  mounted on a USB stick of 8GB. It is only 1.1GB.

6.9GB is just wasted.

Pup is is  now saved in the root directory as a folder (named by me) with home and other directories.

It  reminds me of the 32 bit days, it took me two or three days to figure out how to save Puppy File in the hard disk partition with Puppy on 512MB USB Stick. Those day there were many varieties of Puppy Linux distributions just like Linux distributions today.

With the emergence of 64bitswhich Puppy could not handle except a few like FAT Pup.  It is good this Puppy came before my Book on "Linux Essentials" is published. I would make updates on the Puppy saying Puppy is not dead still alive and in Good Health.

I have stopped coding (forgotten most of it now) but the efforts we mad those days were not in vain.

For the first time, I got my WiFi configured.

Just a matter of keying in the Password.

It has Abiword.

It has Xournal

It has Cherry tree

It has Xpad

It has Geany.

It has L3Leaf pad.

NO LinbreOffice. THANK YOU.

It is only 1.1GB and that is the beauty of Puppy Linux .

If YOU want LibreOffice Please try Easy OS 7.1.

Two ARCH Derivatives Cannot Live Together

Yes, Manjaro cannot live with Reborn.
However, I have not tried Endeavor, since it is minimal.
CachyOS, even though most popular cannot coexist with any. For it to coexist with Debian, it has to be installed first and last of all Gnome of Debian last.
However, most beautiful KDE desktop BlueStar Linux peacefully exist with all.
My problem is I have space for five derivatives.
Two is for Debian.
One for BlueStar Linux.
One for Reborn OS.
I tried latest Gnoppix 26 but it did not boot. It did not ruin my GRUB, though.
Finally I found Parrot OS version 7.
Debian based and it nicely fitted in I used the home edition with TOR Browser.
I do not do penetration testing. I think its bigger version is much better than KALI.
I have never used KALI, a blood sucking Indian female God.
Very bad taste in naming a Linux Distribution.
Instead, try Parrot OS, bigger version.
It is called Parrot Security.
Other is called Parrot Home.
By the way, I try various desktops and REBORN OS supports all except Debian Phosh and Lomiri.

But it has MAUI which is elegant.

But my BASE is Debian GNOME and ARCH is a PLAY Tool.

Debian is SECURE and STABLE and it UPDATES regularly, simply no bothers at all.
I am prudent to back Debian, since it is the God Father of all Linux Distribution.
I stick with the God Father.

I haven't tried Blend OS, simply because merging CODE is a very BAD idea.
The Principle in Linux is one line for one CRON Job with only symbolic links. When one has too many symbolic links the system jams.
In any case, I DO NOT Trust anything coming from India.
It is a cheap DUPLICATE.
By the way, there is a New PUPPY called TrixiePup64-Wayland.
I started Linux with Puppy Linux and I never forget that fact.
EasyOS has a new version 7.1.

Vendefoul Wolf Linux is a good move but I am going to stick with SystemD.
AntiX is a choice for guys who hate SystemD.
It comes from GREECE and still is beta2 version. Beta1 had problems with my WiFi.
Trixe PUP is ready and is only, 1.1GB.

Parrot Linux 7 has a done Good Job

Yes, Parrot Linux has done a good job.

two versions.

Hoe and Security.

It is a KDE Desktop.
I have added Gnome, IceWM ans Phosh on top and used GDM.
Thank YOU.and Merry Christmas.

Gnoppix 26 is Smooth and Ekegand KDE Desktop

Thank YOU guys in Singapore for delivering a new ISO, just in time for Christmas.
I have been Testing all avaible including Elemetary OS which is the worst of all.
WiFi OK.
Colour Scheme is soothing.
Selecting and Formatting partition set up is good
Installation is brisk.
May finish in about 20 minutes.
Yes only 20 minutes.
22 minutes is my base line.
My GRUB is intact.
Thank you for the Synaptic Package Manager and akso listening to my constructive comments.
Plymouth is easy on the eyes.
I am wondering whether I could use a USER Account instead if Root account.
I would test AI fearures later.
Thank YOU, again.
Happy Christmas to all.

I would switch to Emglish now.

I used to land a thundering knock on the skulls of monks who escort young boys after school.
This treatment even Christian Priests received from me at Ampitiya College.

Before, I was thrown out I quitted. I had a big Reason. Mixing the school with Ampitiya Convent was a big issue for me. Incidents there I have already mentioned elsewhere.
I was a violent guy from childhood. No guy could touch me and I would assault with a "mole gaha".
Ampitiya was known for violence, mainly political and based on caste system. However, I had a good ally who was a National Boxer. Give him 2Rupees for a beer, he settles the issue with a single jab. Sanath Gunathika was knocked out in the campus by him. He was from Matale Science College but entered Universiry from Dharmaraja college to Engineering Faculty which a big feat thise days.
He was 5 years older and was a bit of a drunkard but never allowed me more than one beer. He requests me to leave the table after one big glass. I took his gesture seriously all my life.
I was a beer guy but occasionally VSOA and never the cheap arrak. I graduated to Gin and Tonic for a Billiard game to sooth the nerves, we used to say then. I was a reasonably good in billiards but average in snooker. I would not accept a job unless the place / hospital has Billiard Table.

I could not meet him. He left Australia long before I was to come to Australia. I did not do my Ampitiya village trip as usual before leaving.
Two reasons.
No time.
My friend and my relative was in Troncomalee.

Physics was my interest and I was good at it but I choose the easy option Medicine.

Eventually, my uncle left the "Dirum Bodiya Temple".
Little intermission here.
Anura guy did not take an oath before a monk before inauguration.
He would be treated worse than a British administrator of yore.
My monk relative after many sojourns ended up in Colombo, just at the right time when I reached Colombo, General Hospital, in preoaration to migrate to UK.
I used to visit him almost weekly due to his age and medical conditions.
Mr. Gamage, the Chief Clerk of Colombo General Hospital was an energetic man.
In addition, he was the Private Secretary to Senior Premadasa. I had a working relationship with him including getting the release letter to go abroad within 24 hours.
But my additional work was to help my uncle build his own Temple in Muttakkuliya where Muslims dominated.
I made sure, I attended the 3 months Dhana ceremony before I left for England.
I just guessed that I would not get a chance to see him again.
I wasn't interested in Dhamma, then.
His historical point was the British took our last Tamil King of Kandy through this (Mattakkuliya) route to Goa and on that ground it should have recognition. That was the respect monks gave to the king.
Did not matter he was Tamil and also corrupt. The British found many ways and plotted to discredit him with the motive of capturing Kandy.

The Muslims switched alliance and helped the British.

Muslims are historically double dealers.

I cordinated the work at the Temple and the Senior Premadsa was of immense help. My uncle monk's fall from from the prestigious Divrum Bodhiya to Mattakkuliya is relevant here. I would have ended up there, had I joined the Sanga.       I did not have the slightest idea as a young kid, how monks are shuttled between various temples.
It was not easy for a young monk.

My refusal to join Sanga was prudent in the long run.

I am totally against minors becoming apprentice monks and I campaigned against it all my life.

Recently, this Young monk trying to become like Jayaratne Pathiraarchchi is a case in point.

It is an antithesis to me.

I would wind up with the last piece.
When we built our house on an Ant Hill in Panideniya with a large cobra visiting it regularly.
I am deadly scarred of Cobras.
I am not like Anslem De Silva (Please do not mix up with Kandy Mesna Tea man whom I respect very much), who was a parasitolgy department technician and was not a graduate.
He was summarily dismissed on proper charges when I was a Seconded Officer in the University.
When ever he sees me in Kandy, he runs away in a flash.

His image build up is similar to Sepala Amarasinghe but more technical. Sepala is a rank political crook.

We took the challenge and build our house there without interrupting the cobra who visits to drink water during the dry season. I have crossed this cobra several times but it was never aggressive to me.
He comes from the Temple further away for water. Not to lay eggs. Would have been before we built our house.

Moment we finished the house and I got a raketty second hand Peugeot Car with a rusty bottom.
The monk in the Temple send me a messenger asking for Rs. 250/= and a car ride. I gave him the money and told him never come to see me lest he gets a thundering slap.
I did not tell anybody of this incident.
It died a natural death but not really.
When our gradma died my father in law send a Message to the temple for "Mataka Wastu".
The chief monk refused saying that our area did not cover his Temple jurisdiction.
Indirect way of saying NO. I do not think Buddha had such judicial control of the people's land.

We of course had given her a religious ceremony when she was alive. My conviction was that it should be given when one is alive and not dead. A dead body cannot acquire merit is my conviction.
Nobody knew I was a doctor and I pretended not to be.
By this time, by doing simple good things, I gained acceptability in the region and we gained access to a nearby Pirivena with a very Young monk through our domestic aid.
She is no more was the victim of DRUG Shortages. If I remained in Ceylon she would have lived to face the Anura CURSE of the recent catastrophe. She was lucky in a simple way.

Exit when the time is Right.

This apllies to Anura, too.
Time is right for his EXIT.

I was the first ro raise the alarm of DRUG Shortages here in this blog place, long before Kalum Jayasumana.

Continuing on Sangha, my uncle passed away when I was in UK.
I did not know.
My general advice is  call when one is alive. When dead one belongs to the funeral director.

Just before, I left with a stroke of luck I met most Reverend  Narada Thera from whom I learned the basics of Dhamma.
I did not meet the other monk Piyadhassi Thera who had a lot of leaflets in English on Dhamma.
Anada Maithriya thera was an erudite but I never met him but used to communicate with him through 3rd parties for information and advice.

I ended up with Bhikku Bodhi of B. P. S., Kandy but he went to America having written a little note "Buddhism at Crossroads" when Hela Urumaya guys and Champika Ranawaka guys started political overtures.

We are at this point but my current interest is correcting our history with the help of Jayarathna Pathiraarchchi.

I never met Nanathiloka and Gnanapoinika who were veteran Buddhist monks who were of Jewish origin. The B. P. S. land belonged to G. P. Dharmasena who was my childhood G. P.

The building was built by a philanthropists by the name of A. S. Karunaratne and Richard Abeyasekara.

The chief adminstrative officer is Paltha Mendis an officer who retired from Bank of CEYLON.
For any books or leaflets call him directly.
He would respond almost immediately.
If not available he wil get it from elsewhere or print on demand.
I could not get a single copy of Dhammapada in Sinhala or English when I last visited.
That is the interest of Dhamma in CEYLON. Natural catastrophe was impending on this account alone.
Practice what one preaches even at this late stage.
Bhikku Bhodhi leaving Ceylon was a harbinger and he orobably sensed it.
He is an erudite and with no nonsense man. He translated or edited the last Abhidhamma, English copy.

Unfortunately, I left the copy in CEYLON.
l was to return in 3 months to collect them having surveyed the current space here.
Instead, I got the Linux Bible and I am winding up Linux, too.

Trying to Install Elementary OS is a PAIN

To begin with it changed my BIOS setting not to boot from a USB.
I am trying Elementary OS after my interaction with in 32 bit days.
Even, then I was throughly disappointed.
I usully try a live boot.
This is a running commentary.
1. English US as default.
2. Custom Install
3. Selecte EFI
4. Clicked modify
Gnome Gparted mounted
5. I cannot get Gparted in front of the long panel called Select Partitions.
6. I quit Gparted
7. Cannot go back.
8. Cannot Select a partition.
Only EFI was identified.
9. After long pause it went back to English again.
10.Custom Install again.
I cannot select a partition.
Right and Left mouse clicks Frozen.
No respose.
11. Back again to modify.
Everything Frozen
12. Restart
13. No reboot of the USB
Give up.
If anyone using Elementary OS one is one his or her own peril.

File Managers in Linux

File Managers in Linux

There are lot of file Managers is Linux.

Latest I found was 4Pane File Manager.
It is actually is Dual Pane 2Pane File manger. (2x2 = 4).
It is good for redo/undo and archiving files.
It shows the entire tree including hidden files.

In the good old days, I used to look at hidden files and I have forgotten how I did it.

Historically file Managers are 2Paned.

1. Mid Night Commander was one I used, first.

Now they are Desktop Based but can be used in desktops not even intended for.

2. Gnome Files is the good old Nautilus.

3. Thunar is for XFCE4

4. Krusader probably of KDE

5. Dolphin is now the standard for KDE.

6. Nemo is intuitive with web based applications, Cloud Friendly.

It probably comes from Cinnamon or Mint.

7. PCMan but do not confuse with PacMan

It comes from Taiwan with LXDE (light weight desktop)
It looks like it originated from Arch and later ported to Gnome.
It was based on GTK3 and later transformer into QT toolkit.

8. Rox filer is the file manager for AntiX.

9. Caja is the file manger for MATE.

10. There is no file mange for Budgie but Nautilus can be used as substitute.
However, I used Krusader of KDE for Budgie.

 11. Tea is another old time file manager which has lost the default set up but can be evoked into cut and paste activity of a file.

12. PCmanFM is LXQt desktops file manager.

Desktop is called FM.

AntiX was one of my Linux flame in good old days.

I haven't used it for a long time after moving to Debian Gnome.

Mind you now the famous MX Linux is based on it.

My recent encounter came as a result of my recent CRAZE for old Puppy Linux derivatives.

I have collected about 30 already.

What annoyed me the most was the "Legacy Linux "distribution (please do not use it) developed by a guy who used TeenPup in the past and ported a AntiX distribution on top of Puppy making it huge (3.2GB).

It destroyed my GRUB Boot Loader.

In fact, it erased it's FAT boot portion with EXT4.

It cannot even maintain a persistent volume.

I should own the blame, I tried to install it to one of my spare partition.
It took 3 days for me to recover my NUC.
I did not lose a single data file.

I am not a one who backup files in the cloud.
I use another Gnome instance as a backup in the NUC computer system.
If my SATA in NUC goes bust I need to find another SATA, hard to come by, and I left two 1 terabyte SATA in Ceylon with all  my OLD DATA over 25 years and my gut feeling is rust is eating into the metal parts.
They are gathering dust and I am not going to buy a new hard disk.

My son in law gave me two huge 8 terabyte hard disks removed probably from a server..

I need to find two external cases to mount them.

Sparky Linux

For completeness sake,  I should write few lines on Sparky Linux. I haven't tried it after 32 bit era.
I do not like it for many reasons.
Number one because it comes from Poland. Like Indians I began to dislike Polish in UK.
They are very slimy not like British or English. Of course, now I do not like British and Ukrainians. British mainly due to current PM. British Labour guys I new were very smart. I do not like Khan in London, too.
Coming to sparky Linux.
They are slow to change.
Both Media and Gameover were big failures.
They do not support GNOME and I hate XFCE.
I downloaded its 2025 Iso and tested it on Box Utility. Nothing exciting to report.

MAUI - New Finding

This is a minimal desktop that simulate the cellphone
Like Citefish it is a Cute Utility.
I really likes this browser which can be used instead of the regular browser.
In my case Firefox.
I had been using several browsers as long as I can remember
Dillo
Falkon
Epiphany
Kumamder KDE utility.
Konqueror
Anglefish a new finding.

Only Reborn OS and BlueStar Linux can coexist with Debian GNOME

Yes, only Reborn OS integrates wrll with Gnome of Debian
CachyOS OS just like Omarche hard disk dedicated disks. There is no parallel booting. I am not sure whether they allow Microsoft Windows. I do not use Microsoft over, 2 decades.

History of Linux

 History of Linux

1991:
The Linux kernel is publicly announced on 25 August by the 21-year-old Finnish student Linus Benedict Torvalds.

1992:

The Linux kernel is relicensed under the GNU GPL. The first Linux distributions are created.

1993:
Over 100 developers work on the Linux kernel. With their assistance the kernel is adapted to the GNU environment, which creates a large spectrum of application types for Linux. The oldest currently (as of 2015) existing Linux distribution,

Slackware,
is released for the first time. Later in the same year, the Debian project is established. Today it is the largest community distribution.

1994:
Torvalds judges all components of the kernel to be fully matured: he releases version 1.0 of Linux. The XFree86 project contributes a graphical user interface (GUI).
Commercial Linux distribution makers Red Hat and SUSE publish version 1.0 of their Linux distributions.

1995:
Linux is ported to the DEC Alpha and to the Sun SPARC. Over the following years it is ported to an ever greater number of platforms.

1996:
Version 2.0 of the Linux kernel is released. The kernel can now serve several processors at the same time using symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), and thereby becomes a serious alternative for many companies.

1998:
Many major companies such as IBM, Compaq and Oracle announce their support for Linux.
The Cathedral and the Bazaar is first published as an essay (later as a book), resulting in Netscape publicly releasing the source code to its Netscape Communicator web browser suite.
Netscape's actions and crediting of the essay brings Linux's open source development model to the attention of the popular technical press.

In addition a group of programmers begins developing the graphical user interface KDE.

1999:
A group of developers begin work on the graphical environment GNOME, destined to become a free replacement for KDE, which at the time, depends on the, then proprietary, Qt toolkit.
During the year IBM announces an extensive project for the support of Linux.

2000:
Dell announces that it is now the No. 2 provider of Linux-based systems worldwide and the first major manufacturer to offer Linux across its full product line.

2002:
The media reports that "
Microsoft killed Dell Linux"

2004:
The XFree86 team splits up and joins with the existing X standards body to form the X.Org Foundation, which results in a substantially faster development of the X server for Linux.

2005:
The project openSUSE begins a free distribution from Novell's community.
Also the project OpenOffice.org introduces version 2.0 that then started supporting OASIS OpenDocument standards.

2006:
Oracle releases its own distribution of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Novell and Microsoft announce cooperation for a better interoperability and mutual patent protection.

2007:
Dell starts distributing laptops with Ubuntu pre-installed on them.

2009:
RedHat's market capitalization equals Sun's, interpreted as a symbolic moment for the "Linux-based economy".

2011:
Version 3.0 of the Linux kernel is released.

2012:
The aggregate Linux server market revenue exceeds that of the rest of the Unix market.

2013:
Google's Linux-based Android claims 75% of the smartphone market share, in terms of the number of phones shipped.

2014:
Ubuntu claims 22,000,000 users.

2015:
Version 4.0 of the Linux kernel is released.

Simply Mepis to AntiX

 Simply Mepis to AntiX

Simply Mepis is one of the distributions I have installed in my laptop and desktop on a regular and permanent basis.
The other is Berry Linux.

I must confess that I use them for demonstration of cute little distributions and not for daily work.

Edited today 15-08-2010

I think I have touched upon some intuition.
What is written below was before the download of Mepis DVD.

Thanks to Guys and Girls in Mepis for sweeper (which I call a Mind Sweeper).

Making me happy Mepis has introduced a package named Sweeper to clean up the system. It is a welcome I had being waiting for a long time.

I had been doing this manually until now even with PCLinux.

This utility should be developed into Mind Sweeper for others to follow.

I use PCLinux (now 2010-01) on daily basis and it does not give any problem because it has the nice habit of deleting unnecessary files in tmp on a regular basis
(at boot up) and there is no clutter or clogging due to large log files (large log files that are essential for a server and should not be used obsessively in a desktop).

I of course, on a regular basis look at the available memory after three or four downloads and having archived the images delete big files keeping the distribution robust and up to date.

Whereas my wife and daughter who also use two different (both PCLinux-2009) desktops on a regular basis come to me saying that Linux sucks memory, since they download many photos and the like files.

Luckily, I have not given them the administrative rights and when things are bad in five minutes I clean up the unnecessary files and get the box running like new.

The cardinal mistakes everybody makes is that, not running the box over 24 hours at least occasionally and to let the
Cron jobs run, that do the clean up jobs in servers and desktops.

This is something that Linux desktop developers should look at and develop cron jobs, akin to frequent savings in office utilities.

I think a utility of this nature is essential for laptops.

What they should do is to send a message at random fashion while the desktop is being used and asking the user whether it is safe to activate the cron jobs (name it the clean up jobs) without compromising the downloading and downloaded files still in the tmp.

Sorry for the diversion but I feel this piece of advice is vital for the newbies.

Coming back to
Mepis it is one of the best distributions in a single CD and has everything one needs and sometimes things that are missing in PCLinux.

That is why I use them for some special occasions.

Mepis has a new DVDs in bit 32 and 64 versions, I am currently downloading them and I would write a few lines about them soon (having tested them).

Mepis is something one ought to have to get the fresh Debian like feel similar to Morphis.

MEPIS Linux is my humble beginning in Linux and NOW, it is MX Linux

MEPHIS Linux was a Debian based desktop Linux distribution designed for both personal and business purposes. It included  cutting edge features such as a live, installation and recovery CD, automatic hardware configuration, NTFS partition resizing, ACPI power management, WiFi support, anti-aliased TrueType fonts, and a personal firewall.

Though MEPIS Linux was eventually discontinued, its community continued on and merged technology from MEPIS with the very lightweight, Debian-based AntiX distribution.

The result is a project called MX Linux.

MX Linux is based on Debian's Stable branch and with features and components developed by the MEPIS and AntiX communities.

The distribution features the Xfce desktop with a vertical panel layout (instead of the more common horizontal panel).

The distribution also features KDE Plasma and a Fluxbox edition.

MX Linux is considered a mid-weight distribution that offers many modern applications (which are periodically updated through back ports) combined with a stable base.

The distribution strives to offer good performance with convenient features.

MX Linux is particularly well known for its collection of graphical administration utilities called MX-Tools.

These tools provide easy access to managing user accounts, working with software packages and installing codecs.

Pros: Out-of-the-box support for graphics drivers, browser plugins and media codecs; stable core with updated desktop applications

Cons: Installer and some configuration tools look different and can take time to get used to.

It is intuitive.

Software package management: Advanced Package Tool (APT)

 Available editions:

Xfce,

KDE Plasma unlike other KDE distributions it is sleek and cute.

Fluxbox running on 32-bit or 64-bit x86 hardware

Suggested alternatives:

AntiX has gone defunct but would revive an old computer in an instance.

Uses the old ROX File system and has many (?3 or 4) Window Mangers.

I loved it during Legacy days. Failed to configure WiFi.

It is only 1.9GB and I have a copy in my archive.

TeenPUP based Legacy OS  3.2GB which is packed applications also failed to configure WiFi.

Yes, I have a copy, if I ever I go home to Ceylon, I would take them with me to boot my old Tower PC still functioning.

Gnome Desktop

1999 Gnome
A group of developers begin work on the graphical environment GNOME, destined to become a free replacement for KDE, which at the time, depends on the, then proprietary, Qt toolkit.
During the year IBM announces an extensive project for the support of Linux.

Gnome Desktop

This is an approximation.

I have not done any examination of Gnome all my life.

When one is using a desktop ones base one cannot asses it.

That is the reality.

But I can test KDE on top of it easily which I have done adequately.

I have said good about KDE of BlueStar Linux only and rest my opinion is biased and basically reserved.

Coming to Gnome Image it is little less than 6GB and over 5.5GB.

Indirect estimate tells me Gnome Desktop could take only 500MB just as much as Enlightenment desktop, may be the lightest desktop with lot of desktop effects. However, it has expanded over time but not compatible with WiFI configuration.

This is on top of the kernel and drivers and I do not know how much is taken for the kernel.

If I say kernel takes about 50% of the bulk, it is around 2.5GB to 3GB.

This is only a rough estimate and please do not quote it in any forum.

Nobody, knows.

What we know is Gnome Live DVD can be accommodated in a 4GB USB.

But the Live DVD does not have the Installer which it used to do in the distant past.

My first attempt at installing Debian during 32 bits time took at least 6 or 7 CDs, that amounts to roughly 4GB.

AI says 3 t0 4GB for Debian.

Gnome of REBORN OS takes 8.5GB nearly 3GB in excess CODE.

Just to Illustrate again that I have been using Debian for a long time.

Debian-Live
Debian has entered on the Live CD Flora in style.
It has core, light weight and four (4) light middle weight versions that include, KDE. Genome. Xfce and LXDE.
I like the LXDE but all are equally good and outstanding.
Being the God Father of Linux its repositories are full of utilities that nobody else can boast.
There are over 31 (I have 12 in my safe) CDs in its repertoire of repositories.
Thanks for following PCLinux's foot path to freedom.
Instead of packing all X windows in one distribution robust individual X window systems is the way forward.

Do not forget its nFLUX light weight distribution.
Many thanks for your effort, you can be on par with UBUNTU your God Son soon.

Your grandsons will boast about the grandfather for many centuries to come.

A Short Note on Sepala

This piece is really on Sepala

As a doctor, I do not believe in any guy or girl in YouTube without their birth place or birth certificate. I know presently, a lot of Tamil guys and girls who have forged their (some even becoming Buddhist monks) birth certificates.

By the way, my Linux and Internet activity is long before Google was in existence. I have always associated with Google through Androids from Version 4 and 5 (Kit Kat and Jelly Beans) on cellphones and cheap Chinese Tablets.

This is ling before YouTube.

1. To begin with no birth date (age does not matter to me), in public display.

2. He is a self mad man on YouTube.

I even shun Facebook and gave up Twitter when it changed to X in July 2023. I made a little note with all my twitter collection most of which were based on Dhamma. It is in Ceylon in one of my SSD Hard Disks.

All my life I have made one (1) YouTube presentation and that is also on Linux.

3. He was J.V.P. guy in 1989.

4.  I noted him only once when he made an adverse comment on Dalada Maligawa. I was born an bread near Maligawa and I could not take it but did not react.

He is not a Buddhist and I would not associate with him.

What we call "Mithya Dusti in Dhamma" terms.

If I take a Dhammpada verse, for example associating with someone like him leads to decline in Mental Health.

My devotion to Buddhism is total in spite some monks making deliberate falsification of Dhamma tenants.

Now I know he did it to get publicity.

Insurance Guys say even adverse publicity is good.

He used that ploy.

He was an ardent supporter of JVP.

He did not have an ounce of brain to understand that JVP and NPP use them and dump them. That is my experience in Peradeniya University and I never trusted a JVP guy or Girl, all my life.

5. He is very timid guy who cannot take a bit of ragging as a fresher.

That is his reasoning about not trying hard on academic activities but he is well read but his English may be not at Royal level. I

t is an example that Royal College is failing on all languages that include Sinhala and Tamil.

I had an elaborate program to prevent ragging in the Faculty, I worked but failed. They find alternative places we dare not reach and Thuggery is part of their Political Strategy.

Previous article is mostly on NPP/JVP and not On Sepala

A Short Note to Sepala

At least he has disowned his commitment to NPP/JVP which should be appreciated.

I disowned JVP long before they came into power.

I also knew they were very good at lying.

The electorate was taken to a ride.

Ceylon has become a Niragamika State or stateless, culture-less, history-less, custom-less, backbone-less (become rear state of India) and brainless guys in power.

It is a one party governance dominated by a party leader with bizarre policies. It is going ahead to become a country like China (in another 25 years).

They want to be in power for 25 years.

We must put an end to this bizarre hegemony now and we should not wait for 5 years.

We won't have anything left but fully fragmented country as wished by India and Tamil Diaspora.

Only thing they have promoted is alcohol industry.

We know some of the leaders in JVP/NPP are punched drunk when they address the public.

I think they want the electorate to be pinch drunk for 5 years. .

Who would like to live in a state like that?

At lease there are some elements mounting a protest and Sajith has become an impotent opposition leader.

We need to find a vibrant opposition leader.

Wimal Weera Wansa is the only guy with a vision and stamina to stand against these guys. I wish him well but he should be mindful and careful that these guys in NPP might try to assassinate him and try to put the blame on a rouge element from LTTE rump carders who are active under this Government.

People like me who has done the onus to the country when in service do not want to be active in politics, in twilight years.

So leaving the country was the only option available.

I left this country to UK in 1979, moment the six year compulsory service was over.

My children's grouse was why did I come back home while having a substantial job with permanent VISA qualification for UK.

I have addressed this issue here in two pieces (UK and New Zealand) and there is no need for me to expand.

The bottom line is they all ill treat "Overseas Medical Guys".

One can never be expected to work in a good university.

So I came back, and I worked for my ulma-mater with academic and research contributions.

There is is nothing left do.

I am not willing to contribute to a One Party State who are hell bent on destroying Buddhist background culture at the behest of Tamil Diaspora.

It is very obvious NPP got money from Tamil Diaspora.

They are all out to destroy CEYLON and divide the country into pieces based on ethnic and secular religious entity.

The real danger was that the voter did not see it coming.

In other words "Voter were Hoodwinked".

It is time to educate them and make them proactive. Waiting for five years is too, long.

If the CIA could mobilize and could overthrow Gotabaya Rajapaksa with the help of JVP carders it is time for the reversal of that sordid project.

Ranil Wickrasinghe is also "නිදන් හොරෙක් "

Not only Maninhda Rajapaksa, Ranil Wickrasinghe is "නිදන් හොරෙක්".
Stealing ancient artifacts is the English translation.
British were the first who did it first by creating an Archaeology Department. Pananavitharana of course did untold distortion of our history.

With the help of the Archaeology department officials all the ancient artifacts were removed by Ranil Wickrasinghe.

His plan is to sell Anuradhapura and around to Americans for military airbases.

Air bases for Americans Military are planned in Anuradhapura, Mihintale, Yapahuwa, Higurakkgoda and Sigiriya.

Sigiriya was an Airbase for Space Travel for Aliens in the very distant past during RAVANAS. May be 20,000 years ago.

India is doing the contract on behalf of America.
Anura Dissanayske has already signed these documents. Anura's administration is an extension of Ranil's by default.

He is waiting in the wing like a wizard.

There was a plot called ARAGALAYA.

The recent Curse that  that befall CEYLON was the direct result of these sordid political acts.

Ranil Wickrasinghe cleared the ancient artifacts just like Mahinda Rajapkasa in preparation of the total sale of the  country.

Mahinda sold the south to Chinese.
Anura is selling the entire country.

Ordinary citizens will be American slaves in another 10 years.

Debt trap is created for this scenario.
When we cannot settle the loans they ask for land and sea assets.

That is the Reality.

This like the that Shakespeare story (I have not read any of Shakespeare stories) that Jew who asked his debt in flesh.

Was it Shylock who asked a pound of flesh for debt (but death in reality).

Getting Ranil back to power is death to "Mother Lanka".

That is the Reality.

It is a local belief that " නිදන් හොරු " die a very painful death.
One need not CURSE them but the CURSE follows them.

I saw JRJ dying a painful death at Navaloka Hospital.

It was just a coincidence and I signed his last blood report.
I said this guy ought to be dead not alive with serum sodium this low. I used to mentally calculate the osmolality of every blood report to identity cases needing emergency support.

Yes, when I reach Ragama by train, white flags were coming up.
I did not visit him.
What the point of visiting a dead body?
One should visit one when one is alive and mentally alert not dead. I saw him once alive in General Hospital Laboratory probably to visit one of his political allies with Multiple Meyloma (I actually forgot the name but referred AI which is pretty good compared to Wikipedia ).

Sir John Kotalawala had similar illness and I was to do the bone marrow. I was scarred and coaxed a middle aged lady doctor to do it for me. I read it but we never told him the result. He died when I was in UK.
No fanfare after his death and he probably guessed the enevitable end result.
By the way, that Buddhist monk Renukane Chandawimala was at Nawaloka at about the same time and my boss (during my internship) was struggling for breath after a major stroke. This monk refused any blood tests and I believed his dead body was kept there for ages until his real bed was brought to Colombo.
His request no coffin but use his bed and mattress for cremation.
For some strange reason I happened to be at site to witness these incidents and I was helpless.
Looking back, of my working life, after the fact postmortem is a less stressful adventure.
