Highlights!

Highlights!

I escaped from daylight round up of university students in 1971 in Peradeniya University Under Sirima.
The army guy who headed the round up operation happened to be from my college (contemporary but not one of my class mates).
None from the Arunachelum Hall of Residence was taken out.
I do not claim any credits.
The JVP, had placed improvised bombs on top of our room’s ceiling, I was told by the said lieutenant.
What happened to the undergraduates, from other halls of residence, I still do not know.
None of my class mates, most of whom are living healthily even today had any lineage to extreme ideas.
They are/were all over the world and in Ceylon.
This is true of my batch mates (most of them Tamils, none Muslim except one guy from Malaysia; lost contact with him after graduation) of the Medical Faculty.
We had a grand get together in India in 2009 (I did not attend) and in 2018 in Kandy.
There is guy in my batch who can organize a get together on the drop of a hat (mostly out of his own pocket).
Mind you he was a professor (field withheld).
Then, polishing a bottle of V.S.O.A or Gin and tonic was our pastime, and some are veterans in that sport.
He was here recently but I advised him to take the flight back before the election.
In 1983 I was abroad when ethnic bashing was unleashed by UNP.
I was here in 1984 briefly and went back.
I was here in 1984 clearing my unaccompanied luggage at the naval port when J.R.J. was having a putative referendum with a Muttiya (a pot).
Fast track to 1989, I was Number Three on the D.J.V.P’s hit list and I saw the dead bodies dumped in Digana.
The vegetable vender who sold his last stock of vegetables to me was killed by “Deshapremies”.
His neck was cut on the back and he bled to death.
Mahaveli Security did not let him into my clinic a walking distance from his home in spite of repeated requests.
With few stitches, I could have saved him.
There were no electricity, I had a generator in my clinic and stocked all ice creams of the neighboring boutiques and dished out ice creams free to kids who came to the clinic.
Tea was free on my account and I had cartoons of milk on stock.
I bought all the milk cartoons preempting D.J.V.Ps blackouts.
A little girl (my favorite kid) died in her father’s (DJVPs blackouts) lap asking to be taken to me.
A little Muslim girl who had over 70% burns was under my care and I saved her.
A kid with appendicitis (a foreigner) was transferred to Kandy in our car (no ambulances then).
This is my explanation for why I do not practice NOW.
I did my part when doctors were hiding or going abroad!
My name was Number Three (a JVP sympathizer told me) in the JVP hit list and I was asked to leave by one of my laborers.
I saw him few weeks later and never after that presumed killed.
When I was coming home alone, they were digging the road so that a vehicle could not pass (but I managed) and I stopped to have a peep of dead bodies dumped to the Mahaveli River.
There were no crocodiles then in Rajawella but they were transported from Mahiyangana and they slowly went back to Mahiyangana on their own accord.

Mid you Ceylon is a typical Buddhist country by deeds not by Buddha’s sayings.

Reproduction
The police arrest even the drivers of vehicles transporting cattle illegally.
Why didn’t they arrest the ‘white van driver’, who claimed to have taken humans to be fed to crocodiles?
It is a crime to aid and abet criminals.
Legal action should be taken against the government politicians who are shielding the ‘white van driver’.
Will the police explain why they have not arrested him and those who are giving him refuge?

Election Jillmarts of Yesteryear

The last election, and the next

Sanjana Hattotuwa

The room was paid for, in cash, by someone else. The hotel was chosen because of its location close to the HQ of the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence in 2014. Well before election day on January 8, full access to key websites was given to trusted individuals outside Sri Lanka, to post updates from where they were in the event of complete Internet shutdown or pervasive social media block. New SIM cards were bought and a fax machine – because broadband blocks don’t apply to what can be typed out and sent out through other networks and means. Technical investments were made to strengthen key sites and accounts providing updates leading up to, on the day of and just after the election. Data packages from multiple ISPs were procured. In case one network failed or created friction around the production or promotion of critical updates, we could switch to another. A hotel room was converted into an operations hub, with traffic routed through the hotel’s Wi-Fi masked using a VPN. Encrypted messaging apps were used to coordinate movements and operations, as well as to push out updates, in the event key websites were blocked. Contingency plans in the event of a sudden raid were drawn up, to switch information and news operations off-site seamlessly.

Results on the night of the 8th stopped for hours on end. The risible explanation given to some TV stations that called up was that the Election Department’s FTP servers had failed. Something else was going on, and the count, as well as the final results, were being held up. Conversations around this time at Temple Trees, involving the armed forces, the Rajapaksas and other influential members of the regime, featured heavily in the news cycle in 2015. Some who were part of these discussions, a few weeks hence, had entirely forgotten what was covered and who was present. Those of us who didn’t sleep that night were on edge, as music videos, repetitive ads and movies played uninterrupted on channels that were supposed to be broadcasting an endless ticker of results and other updates from the count. TV anchors, at first, noted delays, with no explanation as to why. And then they just didn’t appear anymore.

The SMS news alert that Mahinda Rajapaksa had vacated Temple Trees came just before 6 am. It was just before day-break and the roads around Kollupitiya, close to Temple Trees, were deserted from the vantage of the hotel room window. No sooner than the alert was received, I drove out with a colleague to see what was going on around the area. The first thing we saw were commandos, with almost robotic precision, getting into buses. We hadn’t noticed them coming and we didn’t know where they had been. We couldn’t quite figure out what they were doing lining the streets. We didn’t know where the buses were taking them.

The only other time I have seen commandos of this stature, sporting the garb and gear they did, was just outside the hotel Sarath Fonseka was garrisoned in on the night of a previous Presidential Election, on January 26, 2010. But that’s another story. Driving past Temple Trees on Galle Road on the morning of the 8th, we shot a photo of the sun rising from behind the closed, black gates that on Twitter, that day and the next, went viral. There was no sign of life from within the compound and for the first and last time in my life, no visible signs of any security personnel or armed guards either. In that general area, signs of daily life – the Dimo battas delivering the day’s newspapers, shop owners offering joss sticks to garlanded deities, the liberal and vigorous sprinkling of water infused with turmeric forcing mendicants to crawl out of makeshift beds on pavement and shop front, the Abans street-sweepers and garbage collectors decked in orange – increased with rising sun. There were, however, no school children around. There were also no tourists. Galle Face green was, also for the first and last time of my life, without a single person on it. Stray dogs looked lost without humans to chase, be chased by or play with. The scenes in and around Galle Face and Kollupitiya that morning were surreal.

Throughout the 9th, a few of us kept expecting news of a Rajapaksa regime fueled rebellion. News of the first open-air swearing in an Executive President was received with a mixture of concern and curiosity. What would it be like? What would the new President say? Was it safe? As hundreds flocked to Independence Square around half past six in the evening on the 9th, I feared the worst – a lone sniper, a grenade, a pistol or worse, a larger bomb, ending the new President’s life as soon as he ascended to office. Commandos, different to those we had seen in the morning, lined the area as the light faded. A friend, in late-stage pregnancy, had rushed to take a tuk-tuk to see the swearing in. Joggers and walkers, some foreign but most local, mixed with those who invaded the grounds. The mood was ebullient. Videos and photos of the swearing in capture a carnival of hope. Too many people crowded the area the President was being sworn in, and looked far more uncomfortable than we were. The tensest moments were when the new President arrived and the duration of his first speech, which was regularly interrupted by spontaneous cheer. The loudest cheer was at the moment, a few minutes in, the new President proclaimed he would be the last to hold the office.

And then he left, seemingly with all our adrenaline too. The effects of close upon 48 hours of sleeplessness, anxiety, fear and near-constant tension resulted in the relatively quick dissipation of the crowds once the ceremony was concluded. Everyone took selfies, photos and videos. At night that day was the first full realization, beyond incredulity and residual fear, that a new chapter had dawned, and the Rajapaksa regime was over. No one expected it. No one.

In the campaign to elect the common candidate against the incumbent, an organic, extremely diverse collective of individuals, with no common politics or links save for an interest in facilitating the end of the Mahinda Rajapaksa Presidency, came together to architect and action a guerrilla campaign using social media to counter the then government’s propaganda. It is now known that PM Modi’s social media guru was present in the country to help the Rajapaksas. We had only our own skills and networks. From talented graphic designers to data scientists, cartoonists to writers, this collective – which had no head, no organizational hierarchy and wasn’t headquartered in any physical location - took on spin, rumour, falsehood and propaganda manufactured by the regime and responded to it, blow for blow, fire with fire. With no access to any mainstream media, Facebook and WhatsApp were two primary tools in content dissemination, plus a handful of websites that ran critical content. From large billboards all over Colombo with grotesque images of LTTE atrocities and the capture of private media through fear and murder to the complete transformation of state media as propaganda arms, the Rajapaksa regime did what it could to thwart democratic process and electoral institutions.

It didn’t work. Which is to say, electoral outcomes, even with the best-laid plans, often tend to surprise pollsters and pundits alike. Arguably, elections are in Sri Lanka the closest one gets to an emotional pandemic, where heart rules over mind and tick or preference is made more by reflex, not reflection. But that’s not an excuse to stay at home and disengage. One can fear the outcome but still vote with hope. Please vote. We simply mustn’t go back to how things were, just a few years ago.

Schrodinger’s Cat: The futility of election analysis and forecasting

by Kumar David

A commentator on a popular website remarked: "It’s a waste of time analyzing or deciphering the manifestos of the major parties. If one scrutinizes previous manifestos of new-style Presidents or old-style Prime Ministers, what have they delivered?" Another commentator added "A manifesto is worthless unless it is implemented. What proportion of past manifestos have been? Only a small fraction; an indictment of the rectitude of candidates". Both commentators had Gotabaya and Premadasa in mind. Hence one side of the coin is: The manifestos published by the two candidates are simply a collection of empty platitudes put together by drafters whose objective is to maximize their hero’s votes. Their relationship to what a candidate may do in power is tenuous; at best it conveys a feel for the candidate’s personality and style. The other side of the coin is: A great majority of people do not read any of it. They cut out an attractive picture of ‘their’ candidate to stick on the wall, the other sides manifesto lines kitchen shelves. Irrelevant and unread that is the fate of both manifestos.

This brings me to a valid point. Few people are likely to change their minds at this late stage. Nearly everybody has made up his/her mind; when you read this it’s less than a week to 16 November and I would be surprised if even a tiny percentage is still undecided. Sometime on 17-18 November we will know the outcome, but paradoxically the decision is already made; it’s not that the outcome is uncertain, it is certain, but will only be revealed when the box is opened so to speak. This brings me to an oft-told story celebrated among physicists.

It’s known as the Schrodinger’s Cat paradox – it’s not a paradox for quantum physicists; these things though bizarre for folks like us, is the stuff in which these weirdos wallow. But let’s not knock quantum physics; its predictions have always proved correct. Schrodinger’s Cat (SC) is a thought experiment to "explain in a simple way" how a quantum event can be both "positive" and "negative" at one and the same time. It’s a bit odd but SC is a quantum-cat which can be both dead and alive at the same time, it is in a suspended or superposed state of being both dead and alive simultaneously. This is only till a certain thing happens (I will tell you about that in a moment). When it happens, and only then, the two states collapse into one; the cat becomes definitely dead or definitely alive.

Schrodinger put his feline in a partitioned box like a physicist does to a particle in a lab. Then he closed the partition not knowing in which section the cat was. At random he released a toxic gas into one compartment. If the unfortunate beast was in the wrong place it was kaput, if not, it was fine. Schrodinger then cleared the gas and lifted the partition. In the interim, and this is crucial, the cat was neither dead nor alive, it was in a state of suspended probability. That is in the interim it was both dead and alive; mathematically its life was in a state of superposition. Shakespeare’s cat can "be" or "not be"; Schrodinger’s cat can "be" and "not be" at the same time. You’ve got to relax your credulity a bit and make a concession to these weird physicists. Quantum theory creates a weighty conceptual gap between Shakespeare’s deterministic universe and Schrodinger’s probabilistic world.

Now what’s that "certain thing"? It’s when someone opened the box and looked. Suddenly the two states collapsed into one and became one state; mathematically the cat goes either dead or alive, but only at that moment. It’s not that the cat was either dead or alive all along but we didn’t know till we opened the box. No, no that would be conventional common sense. For these quantum chaps it’s not like that; the cat is neither dead nor alive but in a suspended state of probability until the box is opened, then it decides to be one or the other. [To jump ahead, Mahinda Deshapriya declaring the results is equivalent to Schrodinger opening the box].

What’s the link between the futility of manifestos, everybody having made up their minds but nobody having a way of knowing the outcome, and Schrodinger’s troublesome feline? The point is this: Though the outcome of the presidential election is already known to the divinities, in that it floats in a state of superposition between Gota and Sajith, not on the life of any nitwit pollster, fiction loving manifesto drafter, or blabbering TV commentator, will it be known to humans until the count is over. Don’t believe those who say this one is ahead or that one is behind, don’t believe those who predict how many Tamils will abstain, or claim how many Sinhala-Buddhists respond to Gota’s abrupt anti-Tamil turn after his (and Tissa and Namal’s) effort to woo the Tamil electorate and the TNA flopped.

Suspend judgment on whether the national security bullshit and scaremongering post April bomb attack will panic Sinhala-Buddhists. It has admittedly panicked Premadasa who thought it necessary to open his manifesto with a fusillade about national security and saying in all but words "I will be as tough as Gota; mother Lanka is safe from separatist Tamils and terrorist Muslims in my custody". Gota and Sajith are competing to sound tougher than each other on security, both whipping it up to appeal to the herd instincts of the Sinhala electorate. On this matter, specially at election time, Sri Lanka has not grown up.

Of course Gota is more Buddhist fundamentalist; the other joker can’t build a sufficient number of temples by 16 November to compete. Is it true that Gota’s manifesto is available only in Sinhala and English while Sajith’s is out in all three languages? (The NPP/JVP manifesto is still (November 7) not available in English!) Where does this leave us? Forget about skinning Schrodinger’s cat; forget about trying to second guess the nuances of voting – how many firsts will X get, how many seconds will Y get. Simply dig in and do what you gotta do! And what’s that?

Krishna reminded Arjuna on the battlefield at Kurukshetra: "Look boy, you gotta do your duty; keep your lodestar clear". So, first-for-Anura; second-for-Sajith; nothing less, nothing more. Let’s not tweak our voting intentions, deluded by imagined scenarios of how this candidate may fare or that candidate poll. We cannot know at this time whether anyone will poll 50% firsts, or whether it will go to second count. Here is what we need to be clear about: AKD represents the coalition that the country will have to depend on in the future if it is to go forward,

What kind of a government will Gota’s, if he wins, be? Former army boss Daya Ratnayake has shot his mouth off on YouTube. Rattlesnake-arrogance exhibits the military mindset if ever it gains power. Believe me it’s not very far from fascism; go to https://youtu.be/nyISBGvhNjU to experience the Ratnayake show in person.

What about class? Gota’s base is cross-class; one portion is nouveau-rich business interests, a section of the Sinhala middle and professional classes and ex (and current) military types. I call them the Shangri La throng. The other portion is the urban, semi urban and informal sector; those with what you might call api Sinhala emotions. Sajith’s base is also cross-class; Maharaja type big business, elite and traditional UNP loyalists that Ranil can draw in, and a different segment of middle, lower-middle, urban and informal sectors. In respect of the petty-bourgeoisie classes, the vector that divides Gota and Sajith’s portions is Sinhala-Bauddha-abimane.

Finally, what about international experience? Last week I drew up a list of about a dozen trouble spots where governments are under pressure to quit. The examples varied from Hong Kong where youthful fascist mobs terrorize the streets, to insoluble contradictions in Lebanon and Iraq, and places where a settlement seems difficult – Bolivia and Chile. Streets explode when socio-economic contradictions, personal greed for power and/or hysteria take control. We cannot rule out unrest in Sri Lanka on 17-18 November or in the following weeks. If on Nov. 17 it becomes known that a count of second preferences is needed, it will be a red-alert for Gota supporters. There will be agitation at street corners and at SLPP gatherings. The grassroots will stir to disrupt or influence the counting. Allegations of fraud will fly like embers in a California wildfire. Plots are possible – recall foxy Dayananda Dissanayake’s jillmart and rumours of his sojourn at Temple Trees. Endeavoring to stop Schrodinger’s feline from having the last laugh – that is attempting to subvert the true result – will lead to interminable chaos since no one will be able to get away with jillmart this time.

No game changer in sight

No game changer in sight

The laws and bylaws governing our election (J.R.Js bizarre Mantra or Kumantrana election) is repugnant.
Only the first two who puts the head beyond the tape is valid.
The third at the tape is severed by the tension of the tape.
What it means is that the race is tight and is not one horse race.
It is tight and no one will get the required 50% due to their own folly of putting dummy candidates, preferring them to vote the second preferential vote.
This election will be known for delay in declaring of the result.
There will be violence soon after the election (pent up emotions subdued before the election will come out like a cork of a bottle of good wine) and nobody will get over 45% (my original analysis was 40% but I wish to revise it due to large margin of error).
Ceylonese voters are known for huge surprises and the voting pattern of the first voters and the non-committal intelligentsia will determine the outcome.
So my advice is for you to buy few extra pints of beer (there are bottles now for Rs.360/=) and or V.S.O.A and stock them for consumption and not for resale with hiked prices.
The hording is already on!
I do not go for arrack since majority are adulterated and unluckily for our neighborhood, there is no proper bar but liqueur transported in polythene bags (one, two or three tots packed in small polythene bags and then put in a large black polythene bag).
I of course broke my self abstaining of 9 months (including liqueured chocolates) briefly for a lemon gin in my favorite bar and diluted the peg with tonic and a big fish soup and would go back to my abstaining routine until the election is over.
The simple reason I drink ONLY spirits not taxes imposed on them and I want my friends coming from abroad to bring bottles of wine not arrack without taxes.
Well my favorite is now iced lemon tea or cinnamon tea but due to poor quality of tea I am now leaning on coffee.

Now a brief quotes for the three front runners without naming them.
One’s understanding of ground level politics is worse than J.L. Pieris and reads a prompt like a parrot.
The other is totally obsessed with Podions and simple Simons (if you use these words now one will get a hit on your head with a Kithul Polla) and forgets to address the economic and debt traps of this country.
The third is totally confused in strategy and spoils the soup for the second by pretending to be the game changer.

None of them is a game changer and poor voter has to bite the dust.

A piece from one editorial comment below.

By the time you read next Sunday’s issue of this newspaper, the presidential election would have been concluded and Sri Lanka’s seventh executive president declared, and hopefully sworn. That is, of course, if there is no delay in the counting as neither of the two principal contenders had one vote more than the magical 50% of the ballots cast. If that be the case, second and third preferences of the voters favouring the lead contenders will be counted and added to their tallies. If either still does not reach 50% plus one, the candidate polling the majority of votes will be declared the winner.

Candidates must observe realities

Candidates must observe realities

Ceylon faces a Presidential Election that will dictate the destiny of one of the most naturally blessed countries in this planet.

Unfortunately, our political leaders, having gained independence, did not steer the course prudently, focusing instead on shallow political gain.

They did not enhance the legacy that we inherited from our colonial masters by not being visionary.

They failed to exploit a gifted, united population of many races that studied and co-existed together, in an education system which used English as the common medium of instruction.

Pause a moment to imagine: If all Ceylonese could read, write and communicate well in English how far we could have progressed as a nation?

Were the common and the rural underprivileged masses given the same opportunities that the affluent enjoyed?

At least the gift of being proficient in English would have opened many doors for the poorer masses.

Better job opportunities, dignified overseas employment, unity among races, and a whole host of other ripple benefits that would have been gratefully accepted to live with pride and sufficient economic stability.

All our leaders, past and present, provided their off springs with a sound education in English.

One revered leader made the blunder, the other near dictator who was elected to correct and guide our country to prosperity, plunged us into more strife and disunity.

We would have been a far wealthier, and a very much more united nation if our more recent leaders rectified the selfish, self-centered decisions made by their predecessors. This condensed prescription for governance starts with the importance of nurturing a population that is excellent in English.

We all know that this would, without doubt bring about more unity, eradicate dissent and frustration of well-educated graduates who lack fluency in the primary language of the world.

The language which is understood by most, and widely, the commercial language of the world.

This ideal situation reduces revolutionary uprisings drastically, since the educated youth will find gainful employment in the private sector or seek greener pastures overseas.

It is only idle minds that get drawn to rebel against authority, and fall prey to drug addiction or criminal activity.

Addressing this salient drawback takes a period of time. The developed world will readily assist the Ministry of Education to train teachers to make this transition.

Meanwhile, each Ministry should have a ' Think Tank' which consists of advisors, experts and modern visionaries. They should be the engine of the Ministry guiding the Minister on the best way forward; plotting policy, eradicating waste and making use of the allotted funds wisely. Forward plans for the next 10 years have to be blue printed and implemented by any government that is elected. This is how a developing country ascends to prosperity. Guiding the future generations is as important as any other initiatives taken by a government. Each student should be monitored closely by their school, right up to the time they leave school or drop out.

There must be a system in place where students who are interested in other vocations are registered immediately at these vocational centers.

A file should be maintained on their progress until they are gainfully employed and able to live independently. We would be an example to the world if we launch this initiative.

It is of vital importance that dropouts are not allowed to drift, as they might experiment with drugs and go on to be addicts.

We have to pass legislation that Members of Parliament, elected by the people, cannot pole vault to another political party during that particular term.

This precipitates weak governments who are forced to concentrate mostly on survival rather than development.

Ministers should be dedicated to hard work and give ear to their professional advisors.

Tourism, exports and foreign employment must be given the necessary encouragement and assistance to exploit these primary foreign exchange avenues.

Building an efficient civil administration, devoid of political appointees, is vital for a throbbing private sector and for investors to be fast tracked.

The warning bells have been sounding incessantly to preserve our environment, and it is time that our next administration takes decisive action to arrest deterioration.

Our next President should be a benevolent, decision maker who does not fear or hesitate to make decisions that will benefit the country.

He will always face opposition from certain quarters that would always put themselves ahead of their country.

Finally, and most importantly, we should all act ethically and with tolerance, where every Ceylonese is treated equally and we are inspired to live together as one united nation.

Corruption from systemic to endemic to potential political

Corruption from systemic to endemic to potential political
I am not qualified to expand on this by default but I can formulate a thesis for the young in financial fields to be successful by forging ahead with these strategies.
The least qualification is the degree and it has no value at all only theoretical but no practical know how.
Our mothers an fathers have perfected this at year five entry into National Schools and our schools are the seat of or the institute to learn corruption in style from younger age as young as five years.
I have excluded forces including the Police that only investigate potential rackets but not the established rackets.
I have excluded the Cricket Board and Cricketers since they are the Elite of This country.
But a few words about a guy said to be from UK (putative estimate) and claimed to be a lawyer but no legal experience in winning a single case in UK or Ceylon.
He fills the GAP between the student lawyer and a practicing lawyer.
He was operative from 2017 on YouTube.
His strategy was to collect 20 million from unsuspecting Sri-Lankan expatriates for his SCUM BUG SCHEME (SBS for short similar to S.O.B son of B????) and succeeded claiming half of that.
I can remember only one guy in UK, a guy similar to him apart from our own Sounderanayagam (a minion in this field).
The leader of the Labour Union during Mrs.Thatcher.
He hoodwinked everybody and disappeared to South America (probably) with millions of Labour Union money and Panama was a late offshoot.
That was the end of my sympathy for British Labour Party still limbering under Gerome Corbin.

Corruption in Ceylon
  • Bribery
  • Cronyism
  • Kleptocracy
  • Economics of corruption.
  • Electoral fraud.
  • Nepotism.
  • Slush fund.

    Political scandal
To this I should add the dummy candidate originating from the field of Rugger.

  • Dummy candidates
  • This is the latest vogue Ceylonese can be proud in political history of the world where the ballot paper is printed on scented toilet paper of edible variety.
  • It is so long while waiting for casting the vote one can consume 34 of the 35 candidates and leave only one candidate as the democratically desirable choice of one’s own.

Let me finish with my experience in thew last 24 hours in Ceylon in Kandy, the venerated Buddhist City.
A guy tried to cheat me (I dressed myself like a Foreign Visitor and my disguise worked) Rs.2000 in cash in a HiFi place.
A guy cheated me of Rs. 3000/= on a cheap cellphone (which I am going to return).
A guy cheated me of a Appa (an Egg Hopper) in spite of asking for a receipt.
A stale coffee (probably the coffee strainer was not cleaned properly) in a mug old as me.
    A banana with cadmium poison.
    A banana cake without banana.
A cheese sandwich almost without cheese and the bread was as thin as a toilet paper.
    A toilet paper non absorbent.
A glass of Red Wine without spirits in it but 15% VAT and 2% N.B.T.

The war was finished 10 years ago and we are still paying a TAX named after the WAR of attrition.

    Reproduction

  • Sri Lanka’s banking and finance sector has been treated unfairly by the government when charging taxes from the entities in this sector, experts say.

 This Piece is OLD!

Unlike other companies, barring tobacco and liquor firms, the banks and finance companies pay nearly 60 per cent in taxes to the government. “We pay collectively 60 per cent from our profit before taxes,” a CEO of a finance company told the Business Times.
It turns out that the banking and finance sector pays over US$1billion which translates to around Rs. 160 billion in taxes to the government annually under the present taxation system.
These taxes include 28 per cent in income tax, 15 per cent VAT, 7 per cent debt repayment levy and 2 per cent Nation Building Tax. So it’s 52 per cent in taxes. Bankers say that when computing taxes on a profit before tax base after adding employee salaries etc, it comes to some 57 per cent in taxes.
The reason to tax this sector seems almost sinister. As one CEO put it, it’s almost as if these entities are penalized for doing well.
So how are the banks and finance companies reporting such stellar profits? All major banks and sound finance companies don’t seem to be affected by these taxes. This is so because they invariably pass these taxes on to the customer. As one CEO put it, “ultimately it is the public that suffer with these taxes.”
Another sector expert said that the government treats the banking and finance sector companies like they do with the liquor companies when slapping taxes. This (liquor) sector pays almost 92 per cent in taxes. The expert also added that the government is the major beneficiary of these taxes earning nearly 60 per cent whereas the shareholders get 40 per cent of the profits. “This is not fair. They are taxing the golden goose.”
They urged that the government must not discriminate the sector when taxing. Analysts say that as operating conditions continue to be difficult against a challenging macroeconomic backdrop this regressive taxation is expected to continue to pressure bank performance in the short to medium term.
A CEO of a major bank noted that the government should not target individual sectors or industries just because they are ‘ easy ‘. “The banking and finance sector is easy to target. Successive governments have done so in the past,” he said.
A finance company CEO told the Business Times that each owner of a leased three wheeler costing Rs.400,000 has to pay Rs. 1,500 each month to the finance company.
This means that the finance company has also passed their tax invariably on to the three wheeler owners. Rightly or wrongly this has been done by the companies and the banks. “So the Government’s objective in taxing the banking and finance sector has fallen flat,” he said.

My death wish is not be born again here.

Forms of corruption vary, but include bribery, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, parochialism, patronage, influence peddling, graft, and embezzlement. Corruption may facilitate criminal enterprise such as drug trafficking, money laundering, and human trafficking, though it is not restricted to these activities.

Political corruption (from Wikipedia)

Political corruption is the use of powers by government officials or their network contacts for illegitimate private gain.
Misuse of government power for other purposes, such as repression of political opponents and general police brutality, is also considered political corruption.
Over time, corruption has been defined differently. For example, in a simple context, while performing work for a government or as a representative, it is unethical to accept a gift. Any free gift could be construed as a scheme to lure the recipient towards some biases. In most cases, the gift is seen as an intention to seek certain favors such as work promotion, tipping in order to win a contract, job or exemption from certain tasks in the case of junior employee giving the gift to a senior employee who can be key in winning the favor.
Some forms of corruption – now called "institutional corruption" – are distinguished from bribery and other kinds of obvious personal gain. A similar problem of corruption arises in any institution that depends on financial support from people who have interests that may conflict with the primary purpose of the institution.
An illegal act by an officeholder constitutes political corruption only if the act is directly related to their official duties, is done under color of law or involves trading in influence. The activities that constitute illegal corruption differ depending on the country or jurisdiction. For instance, some political funding practices that are legal in one place may be illegal in another. In some cases, government officials have broad or ill-defined powers, which make it difficult to distinguish between legal and illegal actions. Worldwide, bribery alone is estimated to involve over 1 trillion US dollars annually.
A state of unrestrained political corruption is known as a kleptocracy, literally meaning "rule by thieves".

My Political Prediction of Cellphones!

 My Political prediction of cellphones!

Why did you give up alcohol?

If somebody asks me this question, I have two ready made answers and a few more thought provoking ones.

It effects my memory and my sleep.

I had a fantastic memory as a kid (which many of my friendly fellow beings did not have) and I did not have to take notes.

Equally, I only took short notes in strips of paper not A 4 size but that fitted in my front shirt pocket.

That is also things or the idea I heard for the first time (did not believe in them first hand).

Eg; Evolution

I loved my sleep and my mother would not wake me up.
She was an early riser.

The reasons outside those two are many.

Recent tax imposition which was a draconian law for the liberals.

I only prefer to drink alcohol not taxes.

The effect of alcohol on liver, especially on feel good factors (hormones) of chocolates is an important discovery for me.

Fact that, alcohol hijacks the important biochemical pathways in the liver and depletes micro-elements is another reason.

Alcohol turns non carcinogens to carcinogen and the vise versa.

It is a double edge sword.

My current intention is to highlight the good things about alcohol.
The book will be published after the election when voter goes back to his routine mode of drowning aspirations with ample alcohol.

Happiness (Ecstasy) on one side and cancer on the other.

Cirrhosis and depletion of glycogen are few others.
Sugar metabolism and early morning hypoglycemia can be mortal in your sleep for the elderly over 60.

One does not have to be a diabetic.

It effects driving skills and a common cause of accidents.

It is a universal cell poison, including brain cells.

Two points I missed and not mentioned in the description of alcohol side effects in web pages and sites are;

Compulsive gambling and legal problems related to money matters.

Like politicians (new breed and the old) they can become compulsive liars (to buy the next drink or to buy basic needs including food for survival).

This is where domestic problems arise, including violence.

The debts increase and responsibility decreases.

There are many more to fill a book of decent size.

Benefits of Meditation and Lapses in My Memory

I have reproduced a piece here I have written 4 years ago,
the reason being that I forgot all my bank cards PIN numbers for a brief period.

I used the A account's Pin Number to the B accounts's Pin number and after three attempts bank inactivated all my cards.
Mind you, I luckily had an account in a different Bank and survived until my new card arrived.

All this due to enjoying my retirement and paucity of use of the daily routines.
So I immediately, joined my account with a family member.

The other thing that one forgets is the passwords for email accounts.
I have addressed that scenario in length elsewhere.
Just like forgetting PIN numbers and passwords if one abruptly stops p
racticing

Meditation, whatever the benefits accrued will dissipate in no time.

That is why I recommend (and practice MM) Moment and Frequent Meditation (mental) exercises.

Having said that I have not found a solution for lapses in my memory.
I still do not carry a Memory Note with me.
Now my NEW method is counting the the lapses of my memory on daily routines.

How many lapses a day?

That seems to keep my memory fine tuned.
I sometime forget to fill the bowl with water for my dog.

He is totally blind and when this happens he seems to go in circles round the house to bring attention to its needs.
He reminds me of the daily routine which I forget and the recurrent lapses in my memory.

My dog has a fantastic memory (in our age he is nearing 100 years) and still behaves like a 7 year old kid and won't do anything to annoy me.

That is the difference of a pet and a human soul.

Humans when old becomes very grumpy for no reason.

There is lot to learn from a dog. Sadly he is no more and in heaven and asked Maha Brahma to act as my guardian angle.
That appointment is pending.

This is part of the introduction to my Book on Meditation.

Benefits of Meditation

There are many claims of benefit of meditation often poorly substantiated.
Some of these benefits can be obtained without resort to meditation but simple change in life style.
Suppose a meditator changes his food habits drastically say to a vegetarian diet and practice meditation as a routine and finds that his blood cholesterol is lowered significantly, and then if he or she attributes it to the practice of meditation, there is a big flow in that argument.
One is not sure whether the change in diet did effect the blood cholesterol level or the practice of meditation or both did have independent or summation effect on the level of blood cholesterol. Unless one take a random sample and assess the partial correlation, then only one can attribute combination or independent effects on a particular quantity tested.
Qualitative changes cannot be tested since one cannot quantify the results. In actual fact the effect of meditation is often qualitative and very individualistic and one cannot feel the same effect a different mediator would have felt at the time of his or her meditative stance or instance/s.
This is very true as far as the Jhana States are concerned.
With that reservation in mind one can describe the many unmeasurable benefits attributed to meditation in Buddhist literature.

Metta Meditation

In Buddhist literature it is claimed that one who practises Metta Meditation falls to sleep easily and get up in the morning peacefully.

It is wished in the last three lines of the Sutta.
By reciting Karaniya Metta Sutta one should feel physically and psychologically better, one is made free of illness and one attains the highest goal or victory.
That is of course the Nibbana.
They may be just wishful thinking or one may actually feels better physically and psychologically.
It is also claimed that the natural immunity to cancer and infections are increased by practicing Metta Meditation.
This is something Venerable Ajhan Brahma Wanso preaches in most of his teaching.

Present Moment Meditation

This is something that is worth discussing here.
It has direct relationship to day to day activities.
I believe it has significant contribution to the efficiency of one’s trained skill, simply due to the intense concentration one may apply in his or her work skill at hand (without any distraction).
It is simply the focused attention to the task at hand.
If one is focused on any work, the efficiency goes up by leaps and bounds.
This is very well shown in management training.
When focused attention is combined with attitude to work and other measurable increase in environmental components the work output and the efficiency levels improve.
This is something shop or floor manager can use in day to day basis.
It is called a Quality Drill.
It does not matter how one qualifies the content or the output but the efficiency of the skill concerned improve by both repeated practice and focused attention to the moment of the activity.

Samatha Meditation

There is no specific measurable benefits of Samatha Bhavana or meditation except the attainment of the four goals or paths of entry to Nibbana,
Buddhist spiritual goal is stream entry through development of Jhanas four in this life and 8 in celestial life.
Smatha probably is better for those who are less intelligent (One who is not able to master the finer scientific points in Dhamma).

Vipassana Meditation

This the highest goal of Buddhist meditative practice.
It is claimed that all states of Jhana can be attained by Vipassana Bhavana or Meditation. I may be wrong in this assertion but that is what is spread among the lay persons without full knowledge or the understanding of mediation.
But when I looked at the terminology, it is said that Vipassana Bhavana would not contribute to absorption states.
This (Vipassana) is called the gaining in insight by direct contemplation and vision.
Only in Samatha Bhavana one attains the Jhana absorption levels up to four.
Only when an aspirant has gained the higher Jhana level that one could develop the five kinds of supernatural powers (Abhiñña) the divine eye, divine ear, recall of past births, thought-reading and various psychic powers i.e. walk on water.
The attainment of the supernatural powers is not the real goal of Buddhism.
The attainment of these powers may actually be a distraction or hindrance to a true aspirant or a pathfinder of Buddhist path of glory.
The ability to absorb into Jhana states should not be the goal of Buddhist meditation.
The Jhana states have no hindrance and the Jhana/s could be the way forward of stream entry.
The practice of meditation may bring many benefits and they are difficult to quantify or qualify except perhaps the benefit of present moment of meditation or focus which should be practiced without a label of a particular religion.
It is when one has labels and targets or goals of attainment, the practice of meditation becomes a commercial enterprise of undesirable consequences, ignoring the correct but simple way of development of the mental culture.
I am one who believes that mediation has value in all wakeful hours of the day.
The only exception is when one is asleep and when one dreams.
I am one who talks about dreams and write about dreams and their physiological value is unparalleled only by the practice of meditation in the wakeful state.
The meditation practice is the awareness of the wondering mind and its taming.
That is the Buddhist way.
The goal is not achieving of miracle powers, even though they may or may not come as a byproduct.
Sleeping (and dreaming) is the practice of letting the mind go into an unobtrusive and unhindered state in which the mind is unaware of the physiological inputs that operate in random manner with aberrations of awareness (of the totality) but with interludes of dreaming cycles.
On the other hand meditation is to “let go the attachments” one has with all the mental faculties both sensual and mind centered.

Goals of Buddhist Meditation

The goal is the spiritual attainment (Jhana states can be a byproduct) and stream entry by progressive cultivation of meditation basically by four common methods (there are many more).

1. Metta Meditation.

2. Samatha Meditation with Kasina or various Kamatahans.

3. Vipassana Meditation.

4. Moment Meditation (my simple creative method of short durations of multiple attempts).
This is adequately dealt by Venerable Ajhan Brahma Wanso, in the book "Happiness Through Meditation". It is also published as “Meditation, Bliss and Beyond”.
It is the best book currently available on Meditation in general and my intention here is to make it more of global nature and take the religious tag at the moment of its use.

Memory and Meditation

I want to share a drill I practice on day to day basis.
This is especially because, I am beginning to lose my memory and there are short lapses infrequent though, but enough to raise alarm bells on my part lately.
Once I forgot all my password for bank cards briefly.
This was during our long industrial action when I had a laid back approach to life in general and sleep in particular.
I was not having an adequate sleep (totally engrossed in Linux downloads and testing the isos) at night.
This coincided with forgetting of passwords for half a dozen emails and Linux forum passwords.
This shook my inner senses and I now have a ready made retrieval method based on memory drill.
The combination of Metta Meditation and Moment Meditation have worked wonders for me since then.
I now even have a simple protocol to remember 16 number Visa Card.
The memory loss was partly due to gray matter losing its material and the neural networks not recharging to peak levels, probably due to old age (this handicap is seriously encroaching my body parts, if not the brain).
Metta meditation makes one sleeps well not in one go but in two short spells (Night is the shortest spell when I do most of my work to avoid mosquito menace. The mosquitoes make me aware of my lack of Metta Meditation).
Our dog is the target animal for Metta.
Mosquitoes is the antidote to Metta.
Then in the morning I have a brief 5 minutes of Moment Meditation practice at the end of it, I have a mental list of 10 things or map out the tasks to do for the day.
If the list go up to 20, I do it in two spells like my sleep.
A morning list and an evening list.
That has worked well for the last two years and I still do not carry a piece of paper with all the tasks.
If I have to carry a piece of paper to remind me the day to day work, I think I should say Good Bye and take first steps for the next round of birth.
That is on top of my wish list.
Since, I have not yet achieved stream entry, in spite of my mediation efforts, that will eventually happen (the demise not the stream entry) and is the only viable option left for me.
There is a simple addition to that wish list.
No electronic aids or tinkle to alert me of the wish list or missing tasks.
I do not use a cell phone by default.

I do not want a gadget to master my brain.
I rather "Master My Brain" instead, without a phone alert or a piece of paper.
I wonder, how long I can practice it?
PS;
Having said that I bought three new cellphones for half the price of Samsung top end models.
My prediction is all thew electrical items including cellphones go up in price after the election and import restriction whichever power that may come to power.
Currently cellphones have gone down in price significantly.
My advice is to buy one or two now.
I used buy the cheapest in Singapore and throw it to the dustbin at the Singapore airport, if I do not meet a Singaporean Ceylonese (this habit was the follow up feature of me throwing the bleeper into the dustbin on Friday evening, in UK)
What I really like is the GreenTel with Android Oreo.
Nokia is my second best (mind you they were the first to come out with this addictive item in 1980s with Telecoms regulatory changes in UK).
They were the size of a good size brick then!

Android versions list A to Z:

  1. Android 1.5: Android Cupcake

There is a guy in the opposition who has (convicted) five IDs and 25 Sim Cards and spreading political lies in various names.

Beware!
