Coronavirus

Below is a reproduction from Wikipedia and I want to make few comments even though, I am not a virologist.

There are roughly three types of viruses, DNA, RNA and Retrovirus (AIDS is an example).

Coronavirus is a RNA virus that hijacks the cell protein production factory the Ribosomes with its own RNA dependent RNA polymerase.

1. It hijacks cell protein factory the ribosome
2. Its receptor is cells own protein component.
3. CD (Cell Definition) classification is yet not well defined.
4. What cells have this CD specificity is unknown.
5. It uses a poly-protein of its own creation and a protease to dissect its own protein components. That leads to relative protein deficiency for cells that are affected.
6.We do not know the homology of the viral protein with the normal cell proteins.
7. If the homology is great the body won’t mount an active antibody production to avoid autoimmunity.
8. Whether it causes protein deficiency and autoimmunity needs to be worked out.
9. My belief is that it is an animal virus that causes no problem for in the animal kingdom but once it enters the humans population it can create havoc.
10. If it originated from a bird avoid eating chicken (starve the virus of its base protein hijacking ability) similarly if it originated from pigs (bigger animal) avoid eating pork and beef (to starve the virus of is base protein hijacking ability).
11. If it originated from bats (most likely), I do not have any worthwhile suggestion to contribute.
12. It is better to revert to vegetable protein like ToFu (amino acid composition is different to animal protein) instead of animal proteins.
13. My prediction is because this virus has a RNA dependent RNA polymerase which can mutate at its own will the epidemic will last at least a decade until the herd immunity takes its toll but by then another virus more potent than this will emerge from a viral laboratory that do do not have rigid protocols and closely not monitored by a regulatory authority.
14. I believe all developed countries and China may be developing biological weapons secretly and science (biological) may be killed by its own science initiative.
Regulation is mandatory!

Coronavirus Morphology

Coronaviruses are large pleomorphic spherical particles with bulbous surface projections.
The diameter of the virus particles is around 120 nm.
The envelope of the virus in electron micrographs appears as a distinct pair of electron dense shells.
The viral envelope consists of a lipid bilayer where the membrane (M), envelope (E) and spike (S) structural proteins are anchored.
A subset of coronaviruses (specifically the members of Betacoronavirus subgroup A) also have a shorter spike-like surface protein called hemagglutinin esterase (HE).
Inside the envelope, there is the nucleocapsid, which is formed from multiple copies of the nucleocapsid (N) protein, which are bound to the positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome in a continuous beads-on-a-string type conformation. The genome size for coronaviruses ranges from approximately 27 to 34 kilobases.
The lipid bilayer envelope, membrane proteins, and nucleocapsid protect the virus when it is outside the host cell.

Coronavirus Replication

Infection begins when the virus enters the host organism and the spike protein attaches to its complementary host cell receptor. After attachment, a protease of the host cell cleaves and activates the receptor-attached spike protein. Depending on the host cell protease available, cleavage and activation allows cell entry through endocytosis or direct fusion of the viral envelop with the host membrane.
On entry into the host cell, the virus particle is uncoated, and its genome enters the cell cytoplasm.[
The coronavirus RNA genome has a 5′ methylated cap and a 3′ polyadenylated tail, which allows the RNA to attach to the host cell's ribosome for translation.
The host ribosome translates the initial overlapping open reading frame of the virus genome and forms a long polyprotein.
The polyprotein has its own proteases which cleave the polyprotein into multiple nonstructural proteins.
A number of the nonstructural proteins coalesce to form a multi-protein replicase-transcriptase complex (RTC).
The main replicase-transcriptase protein is the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp).
It is directly involved in the replication and transcription of RNA from an RNA strand. The other nonstructural proteins in the complex assist in the replication and transcription process. The exoribonuclease non-structural protein for instance provides extra fidelity to replication by providing a proofreading function which the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase lacks.
One of the main functions of the complex is to replicate the viral genome. RdRp directly mediates the synthesis of negative-sense genomic RNA from the positive-sense genomic RNA. This is followed by the replication of positive-sense genomic RNA from the negative-sense genomic RNA.
The other important function of the complex is to transcribe the viral genome. RdRp directly mediates the synthesis of negative-sense subgenomic RNA molecules from the positive-sense genomic RNA. This is followed by the transcription of these negative-sense subgenomic RNA molecules to their corresponding positive-sense mRNAs.
The replicated positive-sense genomic RNA becomes the genome of the progeny viruses.
The mRNAs are gene transcripts of the last third of the virus genome after the initial overlapping reading frame. These mRNAs are translated by the host's ribosomes into the structural proteins and a number of accessory proteins.
RNA translation occurs inside the endoplasmic reticulum. The viral structural proteins S, E, and M move along the secretory pathway into the Golgi intermediate compartment. There, the M proteins direct most protein-protein interactions required for assembly of viruses following its binding to the nucleocapsid.
Progeny viruses are then released from the host cell by exocytosis through secretory vesicles.

AV Linux 3.0 is a LiveDVD ISO

Directly copied.

AV Linux 3.0 is a LiveDVD ISO image that is a self-contained, full-featured computer Operating System.

It was created using the Debian GNU/Linux Testing branch and Remastersys.

This Live DVD ISO image can be downloaded, burned onto any DVD-R(W) and then booted and demonstrated on virtually any recent Windows PC without any effect on the existing OS.

If the user desires it can be installed to the Hard Drive either on it's own or "dual-boot" with an existing Windows or Linux OS. Once installed AV Linux transforms the users computer into a full-blown Audio/Video Workstation ready to use!

The User Interface features the very lightweight and efficient LXDE 0.5.0 Desktop Environment.

It's well-rounded program selection covers most every common everyday computer tasks, it features a full complement of the best F/OSS Multimedia Applications available allowing users to enjoy Multitrack Audio Recording and Mixing, Video Capturing, Editing and Converting, DVD Authoring and Creation, iPod Tools and much more.

AV Linux also contains Hard Drive utilities making it an excellent troubleshooting and rescue solution.
Keep an Older PC Productive:
Computer Operating Systems continue to become more and more resource intensive, many times people upgrade their Operating Systems in the hope of improving their system only to be terribly disappointed when their existing hardware isn't sufficient to even run the supposed "upgrade".
PC's have actually been powerful enough for Multitrack Audio and DVD Video Editing since the late 1990's but with the latest Operating Systems wasting precious CPU and RAM on superficial eye candy many potentially productive computers end up being relegated to closets, basements, garages and even worse to garbage dumps and landfills.
The chilling legacy of our "disposable" societal mindset is already evident in so-called "tech dumps" in rural China and many other places intentionally well hidden from the comforts of the developed world.
By combining the general efficiency of Linux and enhancing it further with a light Desktop Environment like LXDE I consider it an AV Linux mandate to keep older PC's in daily use.
I've personally encountered dozens of people who truly believe it isn't possible to build a home recording studio without buying a brand new Mac or PC and spending thousands of dollars on commercial software.
The AV Linux Live DVD serves to demonstrate that this is not necessarily true .
There is more to read. Pleas visit Softpedia download.
AV Linux
The is the best Middle Weight (version 4) category (1.7 GB) of Linux distributions that I have downloaded so far.
Nealy 12 hours of downloading it (pay for 50 bits per second but it is snail pace of 15 to 20 bits-my Linux computer records it accurately) in Sri-Lanka it was worth the wait and the weight in MiBs.
The version 3 has enough utilities and is only 1.0 GB.
It has all the utilities one needs to operate an old or new computer.
It has lots of Audio and Video packages and Blender too.
(XMBC which has problems with configuring the mouse and its resource craving make one feels light weight and happy with LXDE and AVLinux).
A Debian derivative once mounted (Live or Installed) one can download a Linux iso and use Unebooting to make a distribution that can be mounted (OLD-computer without USB booting) with a USB drive.
It is important that one understand the working of Linux before one uses this distribution especially when using Gparted.
This is a distribution for a newbie as well as a savvy.
You can connect your iPod too.
This is something I wanted badly to promote in Linux community, if one cannot change iTunes to another format why not beat it (after having bought it).
Please do not confuse with aLinux which is a peanut Linux derivative which I tried sevearal times but have my own reservation recommending to a newbie.
Note worth Recording
I downloaded Genitoo 10.1 Live CD of 2.5 MiB and found that I could not install it on hard disk.
This is what I call Heavy Weight Distributions of no use.
If few MiB cannot be allocated for the Installing it is an utter waste of downloading where it takes 12 hours (Electricity Bill Sky Rocketing) to download 1.5 GB (Sri-Lanka).
India may be no better.
I downloaded six months of toil in Sri-Lanka in couple of hours in Singapore, airport included.
I wonder where the foreign aid to develop our infrastructure is going?
Our Ministers cannot even mange Sports including Cricket.
IT they do not have the knowledge of 15 year old computer kid (Wizard).
So be it!
Go and download this distribution and send a contribution too, to the developers.
I have copied its introduction from Softpedia.

Why I hate Bill Gate

Why I hate Bill Gate

Windows is a shoddy operating system and resource hungry where my first computer with 4MB Video RAM could not handle Win 95.

I used Debian 6 with over 6CDs could do a better job then.

Later I migrated to Redhat since there were many books written from Redhat 7 onward.

Then of course,
Caldera, Debian and Mandriva and still later Knoppix took me to New Heights in Linux.

About Mr. Bill Gate I have nothing personal to say and his divorce probably is good for both.

Him getting venereal disease from a Russian tart is exposed by leaked Epstein files.

Hanging onto a breaking relationship is nerve racking to any human being.

I hope both do some productive work on their own volition.

My grouse with him is his ploy with manufacturers to insinuate
OEM hardware with  BOGUS UEFI-MEFI (it was named Unified Framework but I used M for Microsoft here for his personal use) or framework interface was an atrocious business plan to stifle Linux users.

I do not have to take permission from Bill Gate to use open source Linux in my laptop initially installed with Microsoft Windows.

It does not let me use legacy BIOS and still have a UEFI script hidden in the memory or within the hardware architecture of the OEM portion.

Simple method to overcome this ploy is to stick a SD of at least 32 GB and install the boot loader there.

UEFI won't let you use legacy GRUB to boot multiple Linux distributions.

I  now use
Linux ESP partition to bypass UEFI blocking mechanism.

If OEM software says no boot medium even after having installed a Linux distribution, this is what you have to do.

1.
Download BSD TRUE OS DVD, Debian DVD 1 and Gnome Partition (GPT) iso CD.

2.
Install TRUE OS and it virtually takes over the Disk Drive of your laptop.

3. Unfortunately it does not let you boot any other distribution.

4. Boot GPT partition disk.
Delete the tank partition of BSD
leaving only the ESP partition which the TRUE OS had created.

Then.partition the disk.with EXT4 or Btrfs partitions.

5. Mount Debian DVD and install.

You.have the option of using the unused part of the hard disk but remember to.mount ESP partition (but do not format the  ESP lest  BOOT details are erased).

There is a very simple solution, if the Microsoft Media is not bootable.

1. Buy  SATA disk
(mounted on a external) and attach it to the Laptop.

One can boot Linux from the external disk.
One terabyte is cheap now.

I sometime go to  Singapore and do my usual shopping and see offers for about a week and by all the stuff one third the price in Ceylon.

Now Coronavirus has put a stop to it.

Coming back to the external SATA disk one has to partition it, the way one likes it to be.

Ultimately install a Linux distribution to boot from while attached to the laptop.

The GRUB boot loader will detect the distributions unbootable from the laptop and boot them via the external disk.

One can use a SD card or USB but installing  a distribution in a tightly packed USB is slow and may break down in the middle  of the installation.

That problem one does not encounter with a one terabyte external disk.

I have used my innovative methods to erase
OEM blocking ploy with BSD and then to install Debian, thereafter.

Unfortunately even
Ubuntu gives up and succumb to UEFI ploy and it destroyed my booting options.

Only BSD does erase everything and install ESP partition.

Not even Debian can handle it.

My Linux entry was due to Microsoft Monopoly

My Linux entry was due to Microsoft Monopoly

 Microsoft Monopoly

Even though, I do not use Window at all, the catalyst for my migration to Linux was none other than Microsoft Monopoly.

1. I was new to Linux.

2. I made a leaflet for presentation for university non academic staff.

3. I found a bright guy who was in the minor staff.

4. I trained him for hardware stuff.

The guy who occupied the official technical slot was an idiot.

5. Slide Numbers allowed for my presentation was deliberately limited by the Faculty.

6. A formal certificate was awarded.

7. This was long time ago.

8. One of the non technical (clerical and she was assigned to me) girl was allowed to attend on the request made by the chief technician.

Mr. Bandara is no more.
This guy is diseased.

I could not refuse.

9. She went to Canada within a month.
She did not tell me that she was leaving.

My grouse was she took the place which somebody else deserved.

She only typed a single letter (by this time I was doing the stuff myself, including my Thesis), for me in nearly five months.

10. I called her and said, she cannot put me as a referee for her work in Canada.
I would give bad reference, in fact the real reference.

After this incident nobody asked any reference from me.

Outside the University, I identified three and guided them in Linux.

Two (asked them not to come back to Ceylon) went abroad on their own accord and the third guy Indika, now holds an executive post in MobiTel.

That is a long preamble.

Coming to Microsoft, at about the same time, I met a young (tiny) guy in Kandy who was running a computer outlet in his home coveted to sales outlet.

He used to go to Singapore and bring stuff which I used to buy at exorbitant prices.
None of them (Window based) are in working order now.

I vandalized them for hardware parts.

1. He organized an exhibition in Kandy for schools so that he can dish out all shoddy Microsoft stuff.

2. He gave me an invitation.

3. He did not know, I was an Amateur Linux Guy.

I asked him to reserve a stall for me with 3 computers.
He said OK.

4. I went there on the opening day with a friend of mine.
Invited a few others none came.

Some of them not coming save me a huge embarrassment.

We could not get in until all the students were allowed.

Thinking that I have stall inside, I did not bother.

5. We went in and there was no stall for me and the guy was hiding, unable to face me.

6. This was hosted in Queen's Hotel ballroom.

This is were we had the last Medical Dance.
So I went with my friend for a beer.
I never take the stuff in the morning only after working hours well past 4.30PM.

7. Then we saw a few, may be six, school children ordering beer.
We chased them away.
They were bribed by this guy.

We got to know Rs.500,000/= was dished out by Microsoft to hold the exhibition.

8. Immediately, I posted a Web  Piece exposing this sordid affair.

9. I became a full time Linux Guy on that day.

10. The booklet revised became my first book on Linux on Amazon Books.
It is available for purchase but there are  five more books on Linux, there.

My next book "Linux Essentials" is ready for publication.

This piece is a pre-publication advertisement.

I think I would insinuate this piece in that book.

My First MINI Computer to Intel's NUC

My basic  NUC has WiFi and Bluetooth.

It is cute.

My first computer was huge, heavy and was a  beast (a behemoth).

I cannot lift it BUT it's RAM is only 4MB.

It boots up with only a Floppy Drive and I cannot believe all my research work was done on it.

This may be the first research work done on a computer (earlier it was done on paper and a typewriter) in our Faculty.

The University did not have a computer.

I did the some pioneering work on the network of computers  (only 5 computers) having RAM of 16MB, the computers discarded from America).

By the way network does not need lot of memory and the server did provide the workload.

For my research work I used Windows 95 and Office.

The Microsoft office with bad macros could not get my paper output for publication of the research thesis and the full print out (I bought a dot mat printer and later Cannon Large printer and still later a digital scanner from my pocket saving from UK).

University had none.

They all are in working order except the dot max printer (which I threw, to the junk yard) and they are filling my bedroom.

This piece is about my entry into Linux distributions.

Since my paper out put of
Microsoft Office was so bad  I used Sun Solaris OpenOffice 1 for my research work.

It removed all the Microsoft Macros and I got the paper layout of my research thesis in A4 papers amounting to about 180 pages.

Then I did some research and found
Debian, Suse, Mandriva, XandrOS and Redhat Boot CDs and booted them on a 10 GB hard disk.

That is my Linux beginning without a GURU but with lot of books.

I still have those Boot CDS but the computer is dead.

Multiple distributions in one PC with only 4MB Video RAM and 128RAM.

I never looked back on Microsoft  again after my research work was accepted by the University.

Original hard disk was only 2GB.

I revived the computer and stuck a 80 GB hard disk.
I would try to install Debian on it today (only one CD).

The others need at least 3 CDs for installation.

Windows had about 40 odd floppies.

Migration from HDD (Parallel) to  serial SATA was a long journey and I love the NUC with 8GB RAM and 320 SATA inside and another 320GB on an external case.

In my NUC, I have
Mint (Ubuntu replacement),
Debian, Emmabantus and Ubuntu installed and they are running smoothly on 18 Watts output and without noise.

Currently it has 5 instances two of which are  Debian Forky ONLY.
Forky is fantastic and very smooth on the keys of the keyboard.

It has Reborn OS, Gnoppix and BlueStar LINUX.

Endless OS is on my OLD ACER Laptop. This was erased and I have 10 Linux distributions on my old laptop.

What a turn around in my life with Linux
.

Beauty of Linux is Linux run on any old hardware and new hardware, too.

I tend to do this just before Christmas BUT I did it by 3rd of October, 2023.

I have three month holiday from Linux.

Update on Coronavirus

Update on Coronavirus

This is in response to a few of my friends.
In other words if one takes a vegetarian diet at least in old age without beef is actually the best way of healthy living.

1. This virus originated in China and those incubating the disease landed in Singapore and entered Europe most likely by Singapore Airline or its subsidiary Airline.

2. Airline pilots and cabin crews, incubating this disease had been traveling all over world before the travel restriction, including USA.

3. It is very difficult to quarantine a patient in a plane in pressurized atmosphere and it is very common to catch a flu on a long haul flight.

4. Few airlines going bust due to credit crisis is welcome and most of the charter flights, the quality of service plummeted but the their income went up exponentially.

5. My last flight by Singapore airline was hopeless and I could not get a extra glass of water from the cabin crew.
It was the young passenger who was seated next to me who came to my rescue and offered me a glass of water.

6. China for its own part tried to suppress the information and one of its doctors who tried to exposed the secrecy succumbed to the virus.

7. Now 7 doctors in USA had died and another 20 infected due to poor coordination of public health information of and its potential danger.

8. Now even Africa is affected (most likely India, too) due to lack of testing agents.

9. In Ceylon they allowed the Chinese travelers free entry and they are allowed (not Ceylonese passport officers) to process their own passports- (nowhere in the world, there is a scheme like this) and only quarantine plane load of our students.

10, Our health officers are not divulging the true facts (bungling by the present governments) about “how late in handling’ the quarantine issue.

11.Closing the schools and universities came too late and I bet our election commissioner will hold elections in spite of the risks involved to the voter and public who would not bother voting.

12. Most of our sports facilities (schools, too) do not have proper washrooms and toilets and the sharing the towel and water bottle, habit of J.V.P. camaraderie is a high risk in this country.

13. In my opinion a face mask is a big risk both of collecting a viral load and disposing (burning) after use DUE to relatively big size of the virus which is 120 nm.
A high quality face masks are not available even in our surgical theaters, not allowing
15 to 20 nm (that is the size of the small branches of the bronchial tree) particles that penetrate the virtual lung barrier.

14. Most optimistic preventive measure is by washing of hands up to the elbow with soap and water.

The mounting and standing bars of buses and staircase elevators are never cleaned)

14. Not to share cutlery and utensils even at home (how many can afford).

15. Stay at home with early signs of any infection (it is too late in most infections, disease is spread during the incubation period which is six weeks in infective hepatitis).

16. Take Vitamin C (cheaper than fruits) as a habit.

17. No western medicine available but there are lot of Aurvedic remedies.

18. Coriander seeds as a drink and coriander leaves as a curry.

19. Garlic, Ginger, Lime, Lemon, Turmeric (not Wada Kaha) and Vinegar.

20. If you can find Perumkayam!

21. In other words if one takes a vegetarian diet at least in old age without beef is actually the best way of healthy living.

22. Egg is allowed as a default vitamin store.

Below is a reproduction from Wikipedia and I want to make few comments even though, I am not a virologist.

The lipid bilayer envelope, membrane proteins, and nucleocapsid protect the virus when it is outside the host cell.

Coronavirus is a RNA virus that hijacks the cell protein production factory
Below is a reproduction from Wikipedia and I want to make few comments even though, I am not a virologist.

There are roughly three types of viruses,
DNA, RNA and Retrovirus (AIDS is an example).

ESP does not work with old IDE hard disks

I found an old IDE mounted on a silver colored Aluminium Case.

It had Old Debian 9 edition and Ubuntu Blackbox but decided to install Emmabantus leaving behind a FAT partition for GRUB.
It did not boot

Tried Ubuntu with ESP partition.
Did not boot again.
I resized the ESP and left about 300MB FAT partition and currently reinstalling Ubuntu.

I am hoping for it to work.
With SATA disk no problem.
By the way, my PC has an IDE as a save and it boots OK with ESP.

The old IDE gives a creaky noice when reding and writing.
I need absolute silence when working and if it failed to boot I keep as a souvenir, since I really like the casing.
It had at least 16 steel nuts to fix the IDE.

New SATA disk can be slotted in without nuts to a external case.
They do not make a noise, unlike rotating IDE disks.

Power consumption per memory unit is Hugh for IDE disks.

Refurbishing of old 32 bit with IDE disks is counterproductive
.

Smaller units (both internal and external) with SSD disks save lot of money.

My PC's SSD is only 120GB and has been running over 10 years with Debian from Debian 9 to 11.

Debian 11 when doing (example downloading) goes into energy save mode automatically.

I rarely use my PC for Internet but use my cellphone for emails.

Running the PC for internet connectivity is an absolute waste of money.

I have had fires with Computers and TVs with cathode ray tubes in our house.

I dismantled 12 of my 14 computer network to save electricity bill in my retirement.

Even the telephone I use rarely now.

I tell my contacts to send me SMS, which cost less instead of giving me courtesy call on my birth day.

I still test Linux distributions and utilities.

Unlike Windows and Apple that consume lot of electricity Linux conversion save this planet from overheating.

Video Conferencing are counterproductive except perhaps  for UNO during a pandemic but they too, contribute to global warming.

Less computers we use and less Twitter and Facebook communication we use it is better  for the planet.

Instead of plant a tree or water plant, lilies and lotus are better for this planet.

Even though they grow in the mud, their flowers are beautiful and enticing.

The Guppy fish live among the lillies bring down mosquito population almost to ZERO.

Keeping few Guppy fish and feeding them good for your heart.

Having being a pet fish man of yesteryear, I discourage exotic ones.

I have disposed all my fish tanks and no air compressor pumps.

Air compressor pumps also need running electricity.

Hot summer coming in soon, the mosquito menace, dengue and encephalitis cause more deaths than Coronavirus.
