I managed to get GNOME on Gnoppix on top of KDE but the Plymouth ddid not recognize GDM. I tried SDDM and it worked but had few more hitches left behind.
The /root was FROZEN and could not handle additional system files. I got a WARNING. Multiple Source Files were residing on the same folder. But carried on and discovered al the resident problems.
This is the problem with KDE. I continue NOT to support KDE development. KDE debelopers should not try to reinvent Linux protocols. CDE had similar problems and that is why GNOME was BORN.
Trinity old KDE does not try to rule the world but the current KDE does. In that attempt KDE is ruining all the Linux Principles.
Even logging in and out was a problem.
Besides, if one has a USER account the PASSWORD utility is in an Utter MESS.
This Gnoppix system is NOT yet Time Tested. It has lot of unnecessary KDE utilities and some additional ones which I won't waste time TESTING. Padding the system with rarely used utilities is not the way to develop a new system. I am not going to be a user of Knoppix and my comments may not be relevant. I wanted to see how AI works and its effect on Linux.
AI would ruin Community spirit which is the Base of Linux. Gnoppix neither has a User base nor developer community. That is the problem. It was a creative idea badly implemented and rushed through.
I am guy using Linux full time for long time. I am not trying to destroy the idea. I see KDE bloating as an antithesis to Linux forward march.
Emmabantus is better choice for newbies.
Good Luck to the Developers.
GNOME distribution guys are aslo trying to reinvent Linux. Dropping Synaptic Package Manager is a disaster. GNOME cannot be reinvented with new package manager. That is the bottom line.
These are the problems Commercial Linux Distributions like UBUNTU, ZORIN, Pop OS, Tuxedo, Elementary and now Gnoppix have.
Please do not try to reinvent the Wheel Linux invested.
Well I would give up Gnoppix.
One should use use ARCH based distributions for new ideas simplified. REBORN is a Good Option.
CachyOS, however is very restrictive and cannot live with other ARCH derivatives.
I am on Christmas Holidays and I propose Developers also take a 6 weeks holiday to be ready in the New Year to face problems, they themselves have created.
Klaus Knopper would be very unhappy and he would not make (German Guy) the mistakes Singaporeans have make.
Yes, Gnoppix has many problems since it is KDE Desktop. It is NOT a complete Linux Distribution.
Yes, Gnoppix 25.10 Version has NOT done a Good Job.
Little while ago, I installed it in my NUC without a problem.
WiFi is OK.
GRUB is OK.
Recognized all the other distributions i my NUC.
Thank YOU Gnoopix.
YOU have listened to my comments in the past and rectified, few missing features.
Additionally, you have added few of your own features.
I installed Gnome using Synaptic Package Manager. It ended up in a total MESS. Inability live with other desktops is my major grouse.
SOLUTION
Simple SOLUTION is as I have stated before for Klauss Knopper come out of hibernation and make one last Knoppix distribution called Knoppix-10 for Gnoppix to have a base to work on.
I would propose Nobel Prize for Klaus, if he does it in the New Year, 2026.
If not it will leave a bad taste for old time Knoppix user. I have been using Knoppix from 3.7. I would not have discovered Linux if Knoppix CD/DVD were not in existence.
Puppy Linux was there but it was meant to be for mobile USB use.
By the way, Gnoppix was not based on GNOME but KDE, arank misnomer to begin with.
Gnoopix has left a bad taste on Linux users.
In my old age I do not use Terminal Interface.
Two reasons
I make mistakes.
My vision is poor., the likelihood of missing an instruction point is real.
In any case I am winding down my Linux activities.
I do not give any advice any soul now.
Say, try it yourself and computer world is moving fast with AI taking over Linux. I am currently downloading Gnoppix that comes from Singapore to see it AI capabilities.
It says Copilot is inactivated by default.
Is it true.
It is 25.10 version.
Says it going to come out with a Mobile Version but Debian has produced two.
Lomiri and Phosh.
I have No data in my cellphone to test them but they are active in my NUC Box.
GO DEBIAN
It takes ages to write Gnoppix image on a USB.
Singaporeans are ones who are visiting my page most.
Thank YOU Gnoppix.
Emmabantus -Debian Edition 6
Emmabantus 6 is out after a long delay.
No blender and no cellphone utilities.
It comes from Africa, TOGO a former French colony.
This was the only distribution that supported AbiWord and additionally, it configured the WiFi and Internet effectively.
It has Synaptic Package manger.
It support five European countries but not meant for Asia.
I gave it up, I cannot remember why but may be my addiction to Debian.
Lie Ubuntu it tried to pad up things but I will certainly recommend it above Fedora SuSe Linux.
However, it does not have Lomiris and Poshe.
A forgotten fact about Russian Linux Astra has to be born.
It was first Linux distribution that integrated cellphone utilities with the PC. It went into hibernation and was slow to update. Just like Emmabantus, I forgot about Astra Linux.
It is 5.42GB and goes above my limit of 4GB Basic.
French are generally SLOW with Linux unlike Germans who are very innovative and have come up with many ARCH derivatives in addition to Neptune Linux ? and I forget the other (not Netrunner which has gone dormant).
Wijepala Mendis was the Minister of Lands.
He purchased a big portion.
The River Mahaveli fascinates me
Not because of its nature but because of its use by ancient kings to protect Kandy city.
I have a book on Rivers and Water Falls of Ceylon at Amazon, one is advised to read it.
When I was writing this book I did some Research Work and I realized that it's current route is not natural but man made.
There are only two bridges over Mahaveli in Kandy and both were built by the British to protect Kandy from sabotage.
In
my belief Heen Ganga is the only natural stream that flows according to
geographical contours with gradual descent, to the Mahaveli River.
I have forgotten the details now.
Coming back to Floods we had a major flood in Kandy when I was a little kid in 1952 or 1954.
I was not attending school but I could remember for one solid month we were home bound and no schooling for my siblings.
It was very gloomy.
Years later I saw the stone erected in Kandy, Mulgampola to mark the highest water level.
I believe this landmark is no more.
Probably removed by the municipality vandals.
The present Gatambe Vihara was supposed to have not gone under water.
It became famous and prominant, after that fact.
I can remember only one other time that it rained over two weeks during Esala Perahera. I hid in the Paththini Devale for over two hours on that day.
It was my only shelter.
I had to walk home to Ampitiya with no buses.
My mother came with me was a wrong recollection.
I did not go for Esala Perahera for a very long time after this incident.
Elephants are my favorites but now I say they should not be paraded for display and they belonged to the jungle.
What I remember as a young guy was that every time I went to Colombo by bus even with minor rain Peradeniya and Gatambe go under water for a few hours. The bus stops at Peradeniya and stay until water receds.
Unlike nowadays, rains were heavy.
No problem, if I come by train.
The train track is at a higher level.
This went on until grand Mahaveli Project was completed and the Maskelliya dam came into existence. Only when there is spill over from Maskelliya Dam we tend to have minor floods in Peradeniya.
The Rugger Grounds at Peradeniya goes under water (not cricket ground, hockey ground and track and field, they were at a higher level).
No more rugger played there now, mainly due to
clashes of students of the two rival schools in Kandy.
There is a stream
that flows by the side of these grounds and I used to stroll through
this pristine stream looking for Giant Danios.
Rugger ground is the wettest and the muddiest.
My research work lead me to reading large books on geography.
My
particular interest was the stretch of road that leads from Peradeniya
to Panideniya. It goes under water ever so often, even with minor rains.
There is a little stream that comes under Kandy Colombo road
and then flows to Mahaveli River by the side of the Railway Bridge in
Peradeniya.
On the other side of the river is the Peradeniya
University.
I used walk (short cut) to the University on the rotten iron plates on one side of the bridge. I stopped this habit when I detected that big iron planks were missing and nobody bothered to repair them. Big risk of falling to the river if I missed one of my steps.
I can remember I was made to run over these plates by the seniors as a part of the ragging. I did a sprint and the senior guys took at least 20 minutes to cross it.
I realized these guys were not my heroes. One of the senior guys said are you mad to run like this.
That was the end of the ragging.
Coming back again to floods, one of the books said that the next flood beats the one before by a big margin.
It only happens once only in 100 years.
Now going by 1954 it is 70 years now and current rain in Ceylon epitomizes the said geographical fact.
What I want to highlight is the mapping of the flood planes.
After every major flood it should be mapped to define the extent of the FLOOD PLANE and its devastation.
No construction should be allowed and the flood vplane should be designated as reserved area and for natural habitat.
People
who built quarters within the Flood Plane should be persecuted and
should not be paid any compensations at all, for their residences.
These are done under the pretext of tourist attraction.
I say tourist should
not be allowed to access the protected areas.
MCC program of the World Bank and I.M. F. have mapped these areas with callous disregard to Environmental Impact.
The bottom line is to protect the flood planes without any destruction in the name of shoddy development.
Our
ancestors had harnessed over 100 rivers, without destroying the
environment and we should make it a point to respect them protect our
country from Mal-designed foreign investment.
Mahaveli River Map
Mahaveli Ruver is known for the scarcity of its proper mapping.
Original Mahaveli River starts from Badulla and drain to the Trincomalay plane.
The original water content is not sufficient for agriculture.
It was supplemented by Kotmalay Oya and Pundalu Oya.
I traced them from the Ceylon Surveyors Map and documented in my book.
Unfortunately, except for it's basin exploited for commercial activities, the river is not properly mapped for details.
This is what I have found.
Nanu Oya.
Puna Oya.
Pundalu Oya.
Kotmale Oya.
Hatton Oya.
Atabage Oya.
Nilamba Oya.
Nanu Oya (Peradeniya)

Partitioning Tools in Linux
Partition Magic is a commercial version now!
Gone are the days when I had to install Win98 and then Partition Magic and then partitioning which took ages and then install Redhat or Mandriva or Debian with dual booting.
Nero was my writing tool in spite of Linux installed on my PC.
Suffice is to say Nero had done enough damage to my CD/DVD ROMs and Graphic Cards.
Then there was no K3B.
Beauty
of K3B is it diagnoses the defective CD / DVD and reject them after
examination without damaging the RAM or the CD/DVD ROMs.
Next stage is Live CDs starting with PCLinux-2007.
The transmigration and single booting with multiple Linux distributions in my computer network and liberation from proprietary components has given me opportunity to investigate partition tools in Linux.
My favorite partition tool is and was Partition tool in SuSe which is excellent and gave me lot of freedom and opportunities.
But then again I have to have SuSe installed to get full use of the partition tool.
Now SuSe Studio has spawned a KDE Partition Magic it is rightful I should mention about the others for newbies.
1. R.I.P (Recovery Is Possible) is one of my favorite Live CD which I use for partitioning.
2. Damn Small Linux and Gparted were the first of my choices those days.
3. Gparted live CD.
4. Partition Magic CD in zip format only a Linux distribution can decipher is the latest of my utilities.
5.
PC Linux, Mandriva were my old friends but PCLinux has dropped DOS
partitions (which I keep for spare storage) which is a bit of pain.
My only grouse now is most of the partition tools including SuSe limits partitions to 15 which is absurd with hard disks over 500 GB are on the market and guys like me who want to have several Linux distributions in one box.
If one distribution has failed in a trick I mount another and get the job done.
For example SuSe gives limited space for Thrash and it cannot delete a large (for example an image of 4GB) file.
Then I mount PCLinux and do the job of deleting the large file with its help.
Do not get fixed to one Linux distribution (especially Ubuntu) since there are hundreds of out there with many utilities like blender, gambas, audio video (Media Box) and many more to have fun with.
To have fun and to have many distributions you need a partitioning tool and one has to master partitioning.
It
is as chicken feed now unlike the days I was struggling to get
everything right at least once a year in December before I recess for
some holiday and relaxing.
Fortunately because my 100 Linux adventure (111 now) I can have a long holiday well before December.
Enjoy all partitioning tools they do not hurt the hard disks unlike Microsoft utilities.
