Pen and paper are out and Tablet and stylus are in.

That is the "sea change" we are going to see come 2012.

I rarely use a pen nowadays, most likely filling a government form or at the bank.

The other day one of my students asked for my pen and he never returned it.

He is becoming like me.

He was filling on of my surveys and I obliged.

Ten years ago, if this happened I would have been angry.

It is very similar if somebody asks for pen at the counter / Water/Electricity Board, ten years go. I used to say NO, rudely of course.

I remembered that he did  returned it when I wanted to go to the bank . I borrowed a pen from our secretary and went to the bank and I did not either till next day.

She a steno-typist rarely takes short hand notes, now.

All of us are hooked to the keyboard and the computer.

However, I do not like lot of paper being used.

That is we are felling trees and not environmentally sound practice.

If the pen disappears and the paper disappears, I don't care.

But we need a replacement.

Yes we are going to get it soon.

Long before "I kick the bucket"

Not a computer we want a tablet with a stylus.

To that you add Xournal, we can fill a electronic form on the fly.

Xournal makes filling an electronic form breezy.

I love the idea of the tablet which reminds me of the Slate and slate pencil.

I wish that its alternative name should be "THE SLATE".

It is said that in USA they are abolishing cursive writing in school which is a stupid idea.

We are different from Apes because of we use our finer coordinate movements for manipulative skills.

If one wants to become a vascular surgeons or a neurosurgeon these are very essential skills.

Chinese make their (actually parents) children to learn these skills early in their life. These skills are essential in shop floor too.

In time to come Americans might need Chinese to perform neurosurgery on them, if they do not teach finer manipulative skills.

That is why when they come to Asia they cannot eat rice with their hands or used chop sticks.

Coming back to stylus, tiny stylus and ekle can be dangerous in young children.

I have seen young ones poking their eyes (accidentally) with coconut ekle, fine gadgets in instrument sets etc.

The tablet should be hardy an they stylus should be safe with a blunt end.

They should be child safe.

Lest few children might lose their eyesight by accidents of the nature  I mentioned above. 

I hope these items from Amazon hit this country before my manipulative skills and eyesight fail.

No operating system is Pure and I have not used OpenOffice or Libre Office since they originated from Sun Solaris Sytem and later became Open Source.

I will ask few question?

Would you change brand of tooth paste / tooth brush?

Two.       2

Would you change your razor blade or electric shaver?

Three.    3

Would you change your hair cut?

Four.      4

Would you change your tie?

Five.       5

Would you change your computer or the Operating system?

In my case I will only change my tie.

I rarely wear ties nowadays but I have over 100 ties collected over 30 years.

Some of them were presents.

I have enough ties to make a rope and hang myself if I need to.

But I keep them in an accessible place not (in the attic) and pick at random when I need one.

But when I look at ties others wear, the ties are broad, long and intrusive.
It Looks like tie hides one's personality.

I do not think that ties have personality.

But I always get a comment, your tie is short or it is narrow, especially from my daughter.

But I do not go and buy a big one.

Why?

I do not need to hide behind a tie.

I know who I am.

If somebody is inquisitive I go little bit further.

I am going to remove this moment the function is over and I will be back to my basics

You know if somebody is angry with me I do not let him/her use  my tie to strangle me.

This is why our politicians never where a tie in public.

I wish them  do, though.

The we do not need a fire arm to kill a fellow guy.

Of course police can say he strangled himself in disgust of not coming on top of the preference list.

Real reason is that I am immune to change.
If one wears a tie one has to either wear a jacket or coat.

It is not the tie that matters in that context.

It is the coat or the jacket.

The tie becomes an accessory.

It does not matter whether it is big or small it has to match the coat in colour and size.

Who is going to wear coat in this tropical country with temperature over 95 degrees Fahrenheit?

Coming back to question 5 one should not change the computer or the operating system, if it is doing the right donkey/horse work for you.

It is just a waste of time.

I am almost (probably I will go on till December) finished testing Linux distributions.

The latest releases come from now onwards till January and I have to check them for the sake of completeness and archiving.

In fact I have published my findings in a book at Amazon.

(" My Selection of Linux distributions" along with "Buddhism Made Simple"  in memory of my mother.

They are available now).

The most important thing is that if you are not changing like me, make sure you have an archived copy of your operating system.

After 5 years one cannot find a copy out there in the web.

There are no archives.

It is going to be so because of the "sea change" happening.

Tablets and Cloud computing.

I have a nice DVD with all the utilities which I downloaded when  I was abroad in 2009.

Linpus DVD, which is pretty good and all the utilities and Amaya too.

I cannot find a archive to download it.

Instead Linpus Light 1.4 is there which is for tablets.

They are changing.

I could not download ALT Linux English Version (from Russia) like the Linpus Linux when abroad.

It supports schools in Russia and I was thinking it would be useful for us too,
in Sri-Lanka.

After some hours of search, I managed to find the English Version and I am trying to download it for the last 10 days but could not finish it.

Once the point to point broke at 1.2 GiB.

Then after another search found the torrent and has only two seeders and one is always in sleep mode.

It is currently 2.5 GiB and need another 3 days to download at the current speed.

The bottom line is keep your CD/DVDs safe.

You do not know when you need them.

When you really need a copy it is no longer available for you in the web.

Mind you unlike Microsoft there is no limit for  re-using the Linux CD/DVD for re-installing.

That is another reason I love Linux.

I have huge archive now and may never use them for my work but if a guy/s having searched and was crying that he/she could not find a copy he or she may  approach me and kindly ask please could I have a copy.

I will oblige.

Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie is no more.

We have lost two outstanding personalities within the space of 3 weeks.

Mr. Steve Job of Apple Mac is one of them.

The other one is Mr.Dennis Ritchie.

He coauthored with Mr. Kernighan “The C Programming Language” (popularly known as “K. & R.).

That was the beginning of modern computing.

He (Mathematician) was the principal designer of the C programming language and co-developer of the Unix operating system, working closely with Mr. Ken Thompson (Electrical Engineer), his longtime Bell Labs collaborator.

His father, Alistair, was an engineer at Bell Labs.

He was recruited by the Sandia National Laboratories, which conducted weapons research and testing.
in fact making A Bomb.

He left Sandia National Laboratories and Joined Bell Labs and remained there till 2007.

Thank god he left lab testing weapons of mass destruction.

Linux we use today originated form UNIX he pioneered.

It is strange coincidence that when cloud computing is on the horizon and tablet becoming  a universal utility both of them passed away without seeing their dream products.

 

There are two others that matter.

They are Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds.

These two will oversee that these products are within the reach of every human being with Amazon bringing the price of Kindle down.

There going to be a sea change.

We have to turn back and reflect on these gentlemen's achievements.

 It was all collective responsibility.

Why I am writing about Xournal?

Xournal is a GTK+ application for notetaking, sketching and keeping a journal using a stylus. 

It can also be used to add annotations to PDF files.

It is because when tablets come small utilities become very useful and they will be the mainstay.

The default is Sans 12, but in this example I selected size 9 for this college application with the teensy weensie boxes they want filled out LEGIBLY. Ha, not with my big loopy handwriting! That’s another way that Xournal is so helpful! Now just place the cursor in the space and type away. Cursor placement is a little tricky at first, but once you get it in your mind that the letters go on top of an imaginary baseline determined by where you click the cursor, it’s effortless. Just think vertically instead of horizontally and put the cursor where an underline would go: “I want the letters on this line. Now you’re ready to start filling out the form.

And you can sign the form using the pencil option. You can choose the thickness! Ball-point pen thin or Sharpie-like thick, and in whatever color you like. For this you need a stylus (or a closed inkpen on a laptop touchpad). But just for fun you can even do it with a mouse!

Can one Publish a Book without typing a Single letter on Microsoft Word?

The answer is simple YES.

Well you might say by using LateX or TeTex.

You might even say using Libre Office or Open Office.

Or you might say I used Vi or VIM.

No, I did not use any of those fancy software.

I used a software bundled in only 8 MiB and used only 30 to 50 MiB of my RAM when running and my Final Output was less than 1 MiB.

It is even less in print format.

All this was done in pure Linux.

The Final Products are out there in Amazon.

1. Introductory Lessons in Linux. It is already there.

2. My Selection of Linux Distributions. Will be out soon when Amazon finishes it weekend maintenance work.

These books are in addition to the other books I have published (but not on Linux).

If you do not know the software, you may have to browse at least the first book.

What the books had done were to organize the blog writing and remove typos and updated the information to current (as much as possible) context, including some information on cloud computing, which is going to be the the next sea change.

I call it the next  tsunami.

What happened to my Cherry Tomatoes?

We are going through some erratic weather conditions  and the single Cherry Tomato Plant wilted away in dry weather.
However it produced hundreds of tomatoes before it died, I scattered seeds all over the place and  I was pretty sure that few will germinate come the rainy days.

This plant was seeded / germinated by the not so frequent birds that come our way.

I know by experience that all the seeds will get washed away like the seeds I used to spread all over our compound but never germinate in our compound but down below on our access road. 

We are at a higher ground.

I remember about the vine that produced a beautiful white plant never germinated in out garden but down below in the neighbors hedge.

The seeds of course I got from the Botanical Garden fence.

Just recently I went to place where / perimeter fence/ I got the seeds and the vine is no more there.
This /story was 10 years ago/old.

The weather is too horrible even the Botanical garden cannot save its plants.

Last weekend I plucked few seeds from this wine and this time I planted  them in a pot.
It is not yet germinating.

Coming back to cherry tomato, with above experience I put large number of seeds in a smaller pot and placed that on a prominent place on big pot where I decided to put the pipal tree which I ill treated for 2 years to see how it survives.

True enough they germinated filling the pot.

They were slender and not ready for replanting.

For three days I forgot to water (I was busy) and all of them dried up.

I went into panic mode.
I could not find a single plant in our compound.

Watered them and only two slender ones survived.

Replanted them on a big pot they were still destined to die.

One tomato plant that was surviving could not take the challenge from the weeds.

I am down to zero now.

The the same weekend I sow the seeds of the vine, I went to put some food for the fish.
I found a small tomato plant just close to the where the mother plant wilted away.

There were no tomatoes seen.

Then just for curiosity sake, I lifted a branch to see there were 3 ripe tomatoes hidden.

I was so excited like the Archimedes, (luckily I was in shorts and securing my integrals) plucked them and sow them all over.

They are germinating now.

They are the second generation plants.

I want to see how many generations I can take them forward.

Interestingly enough there is a folk belief that young plants near the mother plant survive better.

There is a scientific reason for this.

It is called the allelopathy.

The mother plant produce allelochemicls to suppress other invading plants who are competing for the the same territory.

These chemicals saved the day for me not my personal efforts.

Three days of absence did the damage in my case.

Believe in nature and they look after the nature if man does not interfere.

Banana growing in the East is such an endeavor.

They are Nature Vultures.

Ubuntu 11.10 CD is out and I tested it and this is my verdict.

It is beautiful and good for a newbie to experiment with.

A old Linux Guy/Girl will get a heart attack if his/her composition is not like mine.

When I test a distribution having tested over 200 in two years, I have no strings or emotion attached.

I have already given 1420 (Gold standard is 2500 which only Debian has achieved and PCLinux somewhere there) out of 2500 and 300 is for the innovation (i.e Unity Desktop).

Basically it gets 1120 that is just a utility distribution which one cannot tweak to one's satisfaction.

Why I say a old linux guy/girl get a heart attack.

It has messed up with the workplaces.

I still could not get all four workplaces working synchronized.

It frezes when more than 2 workplaces are filled up.

One can exchange the working program from one work place to other  but you cannot open two open office documents or web browser displaying two web sites.

Simply it has messed up with workplace experince and that also to 4, where we could have had 20.

I use 8. That is 6 from Full Monty and one customized to my needs. The other nothing on it.

As far as workplaces are concerned, PCLinux FulMonty is the best available desktop workplace experience, i have come across.

There is nothing to beat it and one can customize it to one's needs.

Canonical, the Ubuntu's parent company is way ahead with cloud computing.

It has both the Client and the Server architecture.

It has integrated the Desktop and  IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service).

It has 5 GiB huge storage.

It will soon allow the Windows and Apple users the client service.

That's not all you can stream Music for less than 3 dollars a year price tag.

It’s Canonical’s biggest enterprise win to date, but that’s only a hint of what Canonical is up to with the cloud. 

Only other hit in the market is Amazon's Kindle on Fire.

Like Nero who played Music when Rome was on Fire one may be able to play Music on Kindle on Fire with the help of Ubuntu One Cloud.

What more one needs?

One does not need to be Linux user to take this advantage.

Go and get registered with Ubuntu One.

It has already hit one million clients.

Who is a Doctor and who can hold the Title Dr.?

Being myself a Medical Person D.P.T.O (Do not Practice and Teach Only) who can use this two letters and the dot for many reasons, avoid using it, doctor part in my life for the last 10 years and it has made my life very easy and simple.

In fact on of my neighbors asked me are you really a doctor to which I smiled and did not give an answer, making him more confused.

Most of the guys/girls who know me come for second opinion, I am more than willing to oblige .

But free of charge and they do get better with simple remedies.

I have few emergency tablets in my purse always for such and eventuality, just in case.

I totally agree with this gentleman and I am more than grateful to him for bringing to notice what ever the PhD one holds if it is not relevant to the (if it is not germane to the holder’s primary current occupation) post currently holding it should not be used as a label of distinction.

After all the PhD may be 30 years old and disproved by at least three times  over that period of time  if it was a good one to tag one's own thesis.

I am in fact currently finishing a book (which actually was a 10 year research work ) and I have decided  not to put that for PhD referral or title and would share it with the general public.

If somebody gives a PhD posthumously for this creative work , the funeral director can put a single copy in my coffin before cremation so that it goes to heaven or hell with me.

For a Ph.D., the title should appear only in second and later references. The holder of a Ph.D. or equivalent degree may also choose not to use the title.

Do not use the title for someone whose doctorate is honorary.

I was trying to get some information about Gourami them but could not find enough.

I will list a few of my own experiences.

Pearl Gourami is the most peaceful fish to keep as a pet fish.

The blue Gourami is the most aggressive and may grow bit big.

At breeding time male changes its colour in the belly to golden.
Then they are very aggressive and chase other males almost the entire day.

Keep only one male and many females is the best method when they are aggreesive.

Male makes bubble nests.

Then the male mate and it squeezes the female belly by wrapping itself around the female.

Once eggs are squeezed they fall onto the base.

The male collects them and place them in the bubble nest.

If any any of them falls he religiously collects them and place them in the nest.

For about  2 to 3 days male does not eat but guard the nest.

Female should be separated after mating and fellow does not allow even the females to come near the bubble nest.

No fish can come near at this stage and he should be kept in isolation.

When eggs start hatching male should be taken out lest he will eat all of them being hungry and have not eaten for three days.

Pearl Gourami is one of my favorite fresh water fish.

They are very hardy fish and very peaceful except during breeding time.

They get very friendly with you and this is the only fish (my experience when separating them during mating times) that come up and stay flat on your palm touching your skin with the feelers.

No other fish does this, only Pearl Gourami.

Blue are not that friendly.

But the can be kept with other species if only few males and many females are in the tank.

They will inter-breed and that is why one gets Blue, Brown, White colour shades.

Generally, they require a tank of at least 20 gallons, with lots of hiding spots and preferably lots of plants.

More space the better and they keep to their territory.

They possess a labyrinth organ that allows them to draw oxygen directly from air.

Most have elongated, thread-like fins. These feelers they use like antennae to touch and explore their surroundings.
In my case the skin of my palm.

Kissing Gouramis aren’t actually kissing – males fight by grappling each other by the mouth.

They’re a relatively easy fish to breed in captivity but caring for the young is very difficult till they are about 3 weeks.

Lay about 300 to 500 eggs.

Many die if not eaten by the hungry male.

If you can save 20 it is a good yield.

Water must be aerated without disturbing the nest.
I often switch off the aerator and water should be very clean.

Good luck with your brood.

My ones are breeding and I do not do anything except feeding the other companions.

I have a very big tank and enough space to hide.

In nature they are very shy and do not come up at feed times.

I drop the food pellets (floating and pieces reaching the floor) and know they are there since the next morning the food is gone.

I do not know how many of them are there.

May be 20 or 30 and I put six of them at the beginning.

There is no population problem.

They do control their inmates according to the space available unlike humans.

They do not need oral contraceptives from WHO.

Over the weekend I was uprooting some of the plants grown on pots over 3 years.

They are wilting due to lack of space and dry weather. 

In spite of watering, they looked unhealthy and the roots were not enough to overcome the excess of evaporation and dehydration.

When a plant is in a pot they are like prisoners.

Roots unable to grow deep looking for water they have to survive on surface water.

If I forget to water for three days they will be near perishing state.

In addition I have cut the main root that come out of the pot.

I am not a fan of bonsai but cutting the main root (so that I can pull the plant out of the pot) is a way to stop them growing (it is my bonsai method) excessively but it makes them to grow side roots that go round the pot and fill it in no time.

One of the pots a weed had got in and had deprived the pineapple plant all of its resources not only water.

In fact Pineapple plant was rotting on its stem and broke into two when I pulled.

Pulling out the weed was difficult it had its main root coming out  through a hole in the bottom of the pot.

I take these roots as fillers of new pots once they have dried out and  they keep the soil and filling spongy for the new plants.

Studying root behaviour has become a new hobby.

Even though we do not see roots unless one uproots  as edible food or as yam they do a yeoman service to the plant.

Till the rain comes they go on search for water.

But what about the root of corruption.

They also hide like roots.
They are so deeply hidden we do not know that the guy/girl is corrupt or not for sure.

But there is one sign that we an see in them.

Unlike plant that wilt away deprived of water, the roots of corrupt are plump and luxurious.

They do not wilt.

They thrive while others are struggling to make ends meet.

Using the roots to describe corrupt is a gross injustice to roots of nature  that try hard to survive in adversity.

Roots of corruption thrive in spite of adversity.

That is the way we can identify the corrupt.

Now that we have elected all the politicians and look at them carefully over the next 2 to 3 years who become plump in spite of their small emoluments.

How they thrive is a mystery to me when we are just struggling to survive.

We never see their roots of corruption.
They are so deeply rooted and hidden from the public eye.

The GNOME desktop offers a well known and efficient graphical environment to the digital investigator.

It is built from the standard version of Ubuntu Linux 10.04.

It can be booted into a PC under investigation as a live CD.

It can be installed into a forensic laboratory PC as a permanent operating system.

It has a beautiful desktop.

I wanted to write about the Gecko, the Firefoxe's background engine thinking it is a little browser.

It is not.

It is a layout engine for multiple browsers that originated in the fold of Linux background.

It takes the content and formatting information and displays on the browsers bland screen.

Gecko has been known previously by the code names "Raptor"

I have decided to support the lightest browser in the line of Abiword as the lightest but a very powerful word processor.

I faintly remembered about its Linux origin.

Currently I favour Midori, IceApe, Dillo and SeaMonkey and not Firefox.

FireFox is light on its own but easily get bloated over 100 MiB with cookies.

I could not find a single article in the web stating their download size (compressed) and installed size.

This information is mandatory when new releases are made and they should also give a breakdown of the size of the cookies allowed when fully integrated.

MOFO Linux-Porteus Derivative

With only 2 seeders and after severa;l days of waiting I manged to download MOFO Linux which is a derivative of Porteus (which is a derivative somewhat defunct SLAX).

I was particularly interested since its release stated it can be installed into hard disk but I could not find a install script.

It can be installed into a Flash drive with the ability to save data on Flash drive.

I did not try but that is what it says.

It has like Portues packed amazing array of packages in 379 MiB with lot of KDE utilities.

Same comment as for Portues hence I do not expand anymore.

It good that MOFO and Portues are keeping the traditions of SLAX.

Small and portable but packed with utilities and ability to download Modules.
