Puppy Studio 3.1

 Posted on October 5, 2010

Puppy Studio 3.1-107

Even though I used PCLinux as my gold standard (it has some problem with its new partition tool-not recognizing some partition types) for live CDs for its versatility and the availability of many versions at disposal, the record for most number of CDs downloaded goes unquestionably to Puppy Linux (I have, more than 20).
Puppy Linux Studio is the latest I downloaded.
It has lite version which is 288MB.
The full version is 376 MB.

It is pretty good and has taken most of the useful packages from TeenPup and LeagcyPup.

Both over 650MB.

Puppy less than 200 is always in my front pocket even when I travel abroad.

Even though, I carry a flash drive (pen drive) I rarely use it for any problem solving.

Puppy is enough and it is amazing in doing simple and complex things.

Why carry a laptop when one can avoid it.

Before I buy something I load Puppy and see whether everything works before paying in foreign currency.

If Puppy fails I do not buy that for sure however much the market hype is.
As far as I am concerned I categorize (like any other Live) Live CDs based on Puppy MB.
Is it less than 200 MB?
I love the ones below 200.

NimbleX is one of them.

NimbleX has become bit fatter recently but still less than 500 (420MB).

It is based on KDE and uses OpenOffice-03 and not Abiword..

The next category is 200 to 500 MB (little less or more).
CRUX, Peppermint and many more out there now.
What annoys me is why try to compress into 700 MB which is impossible unless one uses compression used by Knoppix.

If it goes beyond 700 MB might as well double 500 to 1000 and go for a decent DVD like Mint rather than remain in no man’s land.
There is another problem with trying to compress into 700MiB.
Unless one has 1GB RAM, live session is slow and painful.

Many people do not have more than 512 RAM or DVD.
Many of the old machines can be revitalized with 500MB input.

I am glad to see some are catering for these machines.

Having said that with or without your own machine all Puppies are adorable.

I will be with you on Pendrive Linux soon.

PuppyBrowser

19-09-2010

PuppyBrowser

PuppyBrowser-100
It is fitting to arrive at 100 with two Puppy editions.

I am booted now with Puppy Browser.

It is 5.1. and I started with 4.1 and I have a large collection of Puppies now.
The other that I downloaded a few minutes ago was PupItUp, the music Puppy.
Both connects to the web instantaneously.
If not setup it configures the Ethernet in seconds.

I am afraid Microsoft pets cannot even bark.

Well done.

You cross the line at 100 with flying colours.

Don’t worry Guys / Girls, I think I have made several entries for R.I.P and would add a few more than the 100 already in store.

I would to remain until 2011 for R.I.P..
I should now concentrate on Puppy to entertain me when big fat DVDs take a long time to download and test.

Guess, 4 more days of downloading for Suse and then Mandriva before they metamorphosis.

For record ArtistX has an erratic boot loader.

Reason For YOUR Linux System Running Slow

1. Number one is your Browser. It has to cater for all the languages of the world.
Go for light browser like Epiphany of Gnome or Falkon or Dillo or Konqueror.
If you are using Firefox remove all the language packs you do not need,

2.. Other One is KDE.
KDE also has to support for many countries.

3. Number three and the most heavy is LibreOffice.
Remove all the language packs or like me go for an alternative office package.
Focus Writer
Calligra

Lubuntu with LxQt toolkit

This was edited with Lubuntu on a live session.
It asks for the Ethernet and nevertheless configure the WiFi effortlessly.

It is KDE based and has not got a Software Repository. I am proven wrong it depends on Synaptic Sifrware manger.
Now Ubuntu is gone astray I think Linux guys should keep on supporting Lubutu for at least kids with so many educational packages.
I am going to keep LxQt session in my Gnome base.

LxQt kit did the unthinkable and wrote over my Gnome Desktop. It could not moun
Besides it filled up my /root folder to the brim and that would have been the reason. It had only 22GB of space.
DebianEdu is a Server Edition and it has over 100 games and application I hardly use. It is meant for a school server for multiuser environment. It is the the strength of Linux.
Lubuntu live iso image practically had nothing. It project itself as slim and that may be the reason I never used in 30 years of Linux.
Yes I have to install Debian Gnome 12.9.
I already have Debian KDE 12.9.
No damage done and data are intact in my /home folder.
Another cycle of Linux.
I need to include Lubuntu iny book.
A serious commission.

While we are at Light Weight distribution Puppy Linux is the best (not Easy OS).
It has only 10 applications.
1. File Manger something like Roxi filer
2. Standard Terminal Emulator
3. Process Viewer
4. Default Browser
5. Default Text Editor
6. Default Paint
7. Default Word Processor
It used to be AbiWord now gone to bulky LibreOffice.
8. Puppy SetUp including persistent volume.
9. Edit Tray
10. Help
11. Exit

Compiz
Now Compiz had a graphic Start UP.
It's configuration Setup is messy and could not get a desktop running under Gnome. It lacks the libraries that should be associated with a desktop.
Emulators always run under the desktop not on its own.
It is neither window manager nor a desktop. I hope they would iron out this problem and use a window mander like Puppy but bit eyejandy.

Installation is finishing.
Good Bye fro my Android 13 cellphone.

Lubuntu with LxQt toolkit
I accidentally clicked on LxQt toolkit and I ran a LxQt session under Gnome and ran into Frozen Mode.
Quickly installed fool tool kit including Educational package.
It have over 100 packages and I am hesitant to recommend it for kids (Linux in general).
1. Hydogen was one of my old pal it has beta version
2. LibreCAD
3. It has Htop, too.
4. GeoGebra
5. Fotoxx
6. Kalgebra
but the package that caught my eye was Parley for adding to one's vocabulary.
Lubuntu is about to be finishing its downloading,

See you later with some additional comments
It does not load with games and educational pages on has to install them
It is 3.5GB fits in a 4GB USB Stick.
What I really like is the Bird Front and I do not know its name.
Is it called Racer (Qt is based on)?
It is lovely distribution and I prefer it to AntiX now that Ubuntu gone commercial and fiddling with Rush

Linux Programming Languages

Linux Programming Languages

1. Vi was my beginning but later went to Vim.

2. PHP MyAdmin was my Samba and Server friend but I do not want to touch it in my old age.

3. Perl was my attraction
Being a Writer this was an attraction and quickly settle down on 28MB Abiword.

4. Lyx and Gambas (no more Latex now buts it's derivatives)

4. Abiword
Is a word processor and a command line functionality.
It is over 250MB and is my work horse and it has its development package but very few has time for it.
Debian 12.10- - - dropped it so, I will stick with 12.9--.

1. C
Linux is written in C and this where I started coding.

2. C++
I did not waste time on C++

3. Python
Python was the one which attracted to me on Linux in the book Joy of Linux. It is versatile but so long I gave up.

4. Java I really liked when it had Java phones which one could manipulate. One cannot find a Java phone now.

5. JavaScript I hate because it is cross platform.

6. Bash/Shell is unique
I still read Linux Bible when I decide to look at a shell script for fun

7.  Perl was my attraction until I settled down in Abiword.

8. Go of Google.
I collected its package in Ubuntu which was 1.2GB when it became 2.4GB I have it up.
It has over 75 at which level I stopped counting
Go is Linux based and BULKY.

9. Ruby
Ruby on rails was web development language which ai had a flash when I first developed my first Private Web Phase with WordProcess.com (not .og organisation which has gone commercial now) long before Google was born. I still have it and I have forgotten my Yahoo.Mail (I am going to activate it when I am ready with my 5 books with slow progress. Linus fundamental is reaching 450 pages). I want ot keep it as it is and do not want to post any there. It now active but one need to go searching for my web site’s name.

10. Rust is new and I have no knowledge except Ubuntu trying to Reinvent Linux is going to be a either flash in the pan or making money which was not the intention of Ubuntu Master GURU.

11. Swift
It is macOS which I have no interest.

13.  Haskell and compiz compositor is supposed to be for Research Work with very little FAT in its CORE.
It is on black terminal and until it becomes with a simple graphic front I won’t try it.

14. R is the only statistical package for Linux.
It comes as Octave and is very large package.
I think it was developed in New Zealand.
not when I was roaming in South Island.

15. PHP
Server side scripting language which has become plump and may be a pest and takes over your system.

Graph-Monkey

Graph-Monkey
This a Graphical Interface, I found accidentally when I was installing Debian Gnome and Debian KDE for the umpteenth time to get my basic NUC System running the way, I want.
The installation is very fast and hangs on a application only if it has importance to Linux. This did so, I could read it but could only remember except the monkey part. Did some Google Search and got its functionality and it is cute and it is to my liking of two face physics (Physics is multidimensional) and I am going to revise my basic mathematics, too

My NUC has only 8GB RAM but functional only at 7.2 to 7.3 GB
I have two partitions 13 / and 2 /home dedicated to Text Editers and Nemo (another new find of a Linux File System) with Graph-Monkey facility.
I am going to use it instead of Jitsi which is proprietary.

This is to illustrate the fact, if have access to the Internet which is not free, I can say I am still alive and well in the Linux community.
I am functional at basic code level.

Symphony OS

Symphony OS
Mezzo desktop has a unique attitude to file system.
It does not have folders
1. System,
2. Programs,
3. Files, and
4. Trash

I am going to have a full account of this distribution in my book "Linux Essential" file types in Linux.
I still wonder why Google AI spammed this piece?
May be many other celebrity guys linked ??? Symphony XX are shaken up by the whole episode.
In any case, I am winding up my blog pieces here.
May be related to my favorite actor Gene Hackman (more his wife's death).
My guess was the guys who were dealing with fiances.
I hope FBI would crack this lest President Trump would be really annoyed.

Symphony OS – a Linux distribution which features its own lightweight desktop called “Mezzo”.

Mezzo offers a new way of presenting data to the user. It disposes of standard concepts like “The desktop is a folder” and nested menu systems and instead presents all needed information directly to the user via the main desktop and four desk targets for tasks and files related to System, Programs, Files, and Trash. Mezzo is written in Perl and Gtk2::Webkit, and uses (is based on)the lightweight FVWM Window Manager.

The founders of Symphony OS are Ryan Quinn and Jason Spisak.

The first version of Symphony OS was based on Knoppix, than on Debian unstable, until 2006.

Symphony OS 2007 Preview and the next ones 2008, 2008.1 were based on Ubuntu 7.04 and then Ubuntu 7.10.
The last version of Symphony OS 2008.1 was released in 2008.
The project was dormant until 29 June 2011, when Ryan Quinn started development of the distribution again.

The latest version Of Symphony OS 2015 Beta is based on Debian.

KDE and Enlightenment Update

KDE and Enlightenment Update
I have found a way to shed fat from the full blown KDE.
There are reason for it

I started with KDE and it has fantastic applications.
But what I do not like is it takes ages to mount due to its bulk.

1. Kdenlive is one of them which is much better than KODI that comes from X-Box Media Center (XBMC) from Microsoft.
Everybody knows, I hate anything from Microsoft Windows.

2. I really like Konqueror, the browser

3. Kaffeine is the media player

4. Spectacle an excellent screenshot application

5. Sweeper clean up utility but I prefer Bleachbit of Gnome,

6. Dolphin  a very good file manager.

all these applications come with K in front except Dolphin and ? ?I forget

7. Problem with KDE is its themes especially Breeze and desktop wrappings which do not add to functionality.
Once I fiddled with Breeze themes in MX Linux and I could not mount the Plymouth the boot login screen.
Plymouth is a graphical boot system and logger for Linux that runs before the file system is mounted. It provides a boot animation and handles user interaction during boot
This why I call it a rich lady with lot of fancy dresses which she cannot finish wearing during the 7 days of the week.
Microsoft Windows I describes as rich but clumsy lady.

Please ladies do not get offended.

Just go to Synaptic package manager and select what one wants and it automatically selects Plasma Desktop which is the default.
Yet, one can even remove the desktop but one cannot go back to old KDE Desktop.
That is my point.

Enlightenment Desktop
One need not PAY Elive guys money.
Just use Synaptic Package Manager and install Enlightenment Desktop.
It is light and for old computers and very beautiful, elegant and eye catchy.
DO NOT fiddle with it unnecessarily if you have NVIDIA graphic card If you do not know what you are doing.

Solving The Problem with Wireless Connection

Solving The Problem with Wireless Connection

Some of the Widow Managers on their own cannot configure the Wireless Connection.

What one can do is to run it under Debian, Gnome

If the Widow Manager has web browser it would then connect to the Internet.

If the Widow Manager has a light weight browser, one has the luxury of  no snooping, too.

Ubuntu – a Debian-based Linux distribution, with Unity as its default desktop environment for personal computers including laptops, desktops, smartphones and for server machines as well. It is based on free software and named after the Southern African philosophy of Ubuntu (literally, “human-ness”), which often is translated as “humanity towards others”.

The first official Ubuntu release 4.10 (Warty Warthog) was published in October 20, 2004.
Every next release is published in April and October, in a 6 mount cycle.
Every 2 years, Ubuntu is offered as a Long Term Support release (10.04, 12.04, 14.04, etc.).
Up to version 10.10, the main desktop was Gnome 2; starting from version 11.04 the Gnome was replaced by Unity.
Ubuntu is available as a Live, installable iso image, as well as alternative version which provides text based installer only.

Development of Ubuntu is led by UK-based Canonical Ltd., a company owned by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth.

There are a few official Ubuntu variants shipped with different desktop environment or language, such as:
– Kubuntu – with KDE desktop environment
– Xubuntu – with Xfce
– Lubuntu – with LXDE, targeted to older machines
– Edubuntu – for school environments and home users
– Ubuntu Studio – for professional video and audio editing
– Mythbuntu – designed for creating a home theater PC with MythTV pre-installed
– Ubuntu Kylin – a Chinese version of Ubuntu Desktop
– Ubuntu Gnome – with Gnome 3
– Ubuntu MATE – with MATE (fork Gnome 2)

There is also a large number of derivatives built on the top of Ubuntu.

I provided the first stable iso image of Ubuntu 4.10 to be downloaded.

Aggressive in reference to pre-packaged tools and scripts that, unlike the previous mentioned actively engage in offensive testing and auditing – whether by DOS, bruteforce, exploitation, etc., WiFi is quite obviously the intended purpose for testing, as we all know wireless access is the achilles heel of most if not all home and / or other internet / network access. That being said, again this distribution and / or software is intended for use and testing on your own wireless network, systems and devices or any that you have explicit permision to test.

Ideal for:
– WiFi / wireless network and systems auditing

Mandriva Linux (previously: Mandrake Linux) – an independent Linux distribution, originally forked from Red Hat Linux.

The system features the most popular desktop environments, a set of pre-installed application for daily usage, and integrated its own graphical configuration utilities tool ‘Mandriva Control Center’.

Mandriva Linux uses ‘urpmi’ package manager, which allows installation of packages by automatically installing all the needed dependencies, from various media, including network/Internet, CD/DVD and local disk. Urpmi has a graphical front-end called ‘pmdrake’, which is integrated into the Mandriva Control Center.
The RPM package management system is also available in the system to perform operation on the packages.

Mandriva Linux was started in 1998 under the name of Mandrake Linux
.
The first release was based on Red Hat Linux 5.1, used the K Desktop Environment 1, and was released in July 1998.
In February 2005, MandrakeSoft merged with Brazil’s company called Conectiva to the new Mandriva S.A
In May 2015 Mandriva SA has been closed.

The last stable version of Mandriva Linux 2011 was released in August 2011.

Derivatives:
– Most Mandriva Linux developers went to Mandriva fork called Mageia.
– ROSA is a fork of Mandriva created by former Mandriva developers too.
– OpenMandriva Lx has been built on the top of ROSA as its fork.
– PCLinuxOS initially derived from Mandrake.
– Unity Linux (discontinued) is a Mandriva based distribution.

Old Computers Come and Gone-Before Microsoft Invasion

Old Computers Come and Gone
Before Microsoft Invasion

1. Commodore PET, VIC, 64, 128
Started in 1977 and wound up in 1994
Guy switched to Atari, killing the project
I cut my teeth in 1988 with Commodore 128

2. Apple
IIe, Next, Mac, iMac
Never heard of them in Ceylon
I tried an Apple Globe discarded from Japan.
With minimum RAM but needed 6 or 7 CDs to boot Red Hat (Yellow hat) version.
Later booted with 2 Debian CDs and discarded before leaving Ceylon.
It was pain to operate it.

3. Tandy
TRS-80, 1000
I have seen a few in Unite kingdom but never tried it.

4. IBM PC (51XX)

My first computer was assembled Intel Commuter and not a branded one.
128MB ? 3-DDR RAM
4MB Video RAM
2 GB Dusk Drive upgraded to 80GB
Two CD/DVD Drives
It is still in Ceylon

It won't boot even Ubuntu 6 version
My branded computers were second hand IBM discarded from America or Canada in Alpha Computers in Kandy

I had 15 of IBM Intel Network at home.
Discarded 13 of them leaving two for testing Linux distributions.
Did not give any of them even to test.
Power consumption was enormous.
This was the 32 bit time

Discarded all of them after I assembled a new PC with SATA drives.
Moved to 64 bit computers
It is in running condition in Ceylon but gathering dust.

The IBM Server was in my office room with 128 RAM and I could never find another IBM RAM to upgrade it and discarded.
The server
The telecom did not have routers but a Modem
I went Singapore and bought a router to connect all the 15 computers at home with 7 levels.
Ethernet wiring was done by me having climbed to the the roof.
I was supervising the Samba Network in the Faculty of Dental Sciences and I trained a guy in wiring and he was sent to the Engineering Faculty.
I measured the lengths and connections needed and got the PC Land guys in Kandy to fix the end point Ethernet plugs.
The wiring was expensive and I did not want them to be bent and destroy (I removed them before coming to Australia) the tiny coppers wires inside. They were put inside pipes used to run electric wires and were not exposed to e3lements.

Why Sansoni Commission Forgotten?

Why Sansoni Commission Forgotten?

JVP only talk about Udulagama Commission but carefully ignored the Sansoni Commission which some politicians burned to hide the facts.

Also President Premadasa Commission was published 12 years after his death

These commissions did not bring meaningful correction to our polity excet pardoning ones who were involved.
Some others were killed in extrajudicial actions
Batalanda commission comes under these extrajudicial actions.

Under British Before Independence

Elementary OS

 17-04-2019
Elementary OS
Concept of Elementary OS is elementary.

It has a small footprint to start with but it can expand to one's needs.

Its look is something like Mac Os with square windows, is eye-catching but nevertheless still foreign to one who comes from Gnome and KDE base with minimal clutter (with work spaces that keep individual process one not currently working out of sight).

Having said that its commercial entry and approach, I welcome, since Linux guys also needs bread and butter (or rice and curry) for survival.

Its packages are $1 to $3 dollars are withing everyone’s reach and for $100 dollars one can have 25 to 30 packages of ones liking.

It has large repertoire of FREE packages, I do not need any of the fancy stuff, since I use Debian as my workhorse.

Peppermint by the way, I am losing interest due to its bulkiness and slow speed of booting.

I keep an eye on PinguyOs but it has some teething problem with Grub File.

None of them supports UnetBootIn except AVLinux.

So don’t be a distro-hopper but have multiple distributions installed on an external turntable hard drive (preferably not SSD, that has problems with multiple booting).

If you are using SSD better try, MultiSystem CD for booting multiple distributions on a USB pendrive.

Currently UnetBootIn support only one distribution (good old days multiple distributions on a stick) at a time.

Debian does not support the MultiSystem, which is  a French System but UnetBootIn does the honours with Debian (I put Debian 9.8.0 on a stick since I hate humming Disk Drive in the background when running).

Thanks the guys and girls doing the wonderful stuff for Linux.

Please do not let UnetBootIn go into extinction.
