Yes, the releases of Elementary OS are named after mythological gods and goddesses. Some examples include:

 Jupiter: The first stable version of Elementary OS, released on March 31, 2011

Luna: The first beta version of Elementary OS, released in November 2012
 

Hera: A major update to Elementary OS that focused on improving performance and user experience
 

Jólnir: A minor update to Elementary OS that built on the foundation of OS 6 Odin 

Odin: The name of one of the releases of Elementary OS
Horus: The codename of the latest version of Elementary OS
Circe: The codename of the upcoming version of Elementary OS

Elementary OS is a Linux distribution that is based on Ubuntu. 

It uses a custom desktop environment called Pantheon. 

The platform is open source and is built on a foundation of free and open source software

Concept of Elementary OS is elementary.

It has a small footprint to start with but it can expand to one's needs.

Its look is something like MacOS with square windows, is eye-catching but nevertheless still foreign to one who comes from Gnome and KDE base with minimal clutter (with work spaces that keep individual process one that currently not in use, working out of sight).

 

Having said that its commercial entry and approach, I welcome, since Linux guys also needs bread and butter (or rice and curry) for survival. 

I have a different view with ELive Linux which is a pest in Linux.

Its packages are $1 to $3 dollars are within everyone’s reach and for $100 dollars one can have 25 to 30 packages of one's liking.

It has large repertoire of FREE packages, I do not need any of the fancy stuff, since I use Debian as my workhorse.

Peppermint by the way, I am losing interest due to its bulkiness and slow speed of booting.

I keep an eye on PinguyOs but it has some teething problem with Grub File.

None of them supports UnetBootIn except AVLinux.

 

So don’t be a distro-hopper but have multiple distributions installed on an external turntable hard drive (preferably not SSD, that has problems with multiple booting).

If you are using SSD better try, MultiSystem CD for booting multiple distributions on a USB pen or drive.

Currently UnetBootIn support only one distribution (good old days multiple distributions on a stick) at a time.

 

Debian does not support the MultiSystem, which is a French System but UnetBootIn does the honours with Debian (I put Debian 9.8.0 on a stick since I hate humming Disk Drive in the background when installing).

 

Thanks the guys and girls doing the wonderful stuff for Linux.

 

Please do not let UnetBootIn go into extinction.

ArcoLinux has both XFCE and Plasma images and both of them are elegant when run on Box Utiltiy.

I manged to get a copy of Elementary OS by accident and it freezed on Box Utility.

It has its own desktop type named after a God named Pantheon

Commodore 128 was the first cartridge computer I used well before Atari. I was about to leave England for good and was packing things home. One of the big stores (may be now defunct Australian Woolworth) dumped a Commodore for 1/4 the price. 

I disregarded both Sinclair and Amstrad and bought it. 

It had a cassette player running along with it on which I could write small programs. Unfortunately, within six months due to Voltage Problem in Ceylon the transformer (power supply) packed up and my coding exercise abruptly stopped, since I could not find a replacement. 

I thought I should have bought a Sinclair instead.

It started in 1974 with MOS technology.

Then copyright issues with Motorola and KIM-1 chip was born.

It was called 6502.

Commodore PET was born which looked like Apple II.

Not Dynamic or DRAM.

IK for the RAM of the operating system and 3K for the User.

It had lot of simple games.

Started in 1977.

Released in 1980.

6560 Chip.

Called Video Interphase chip.

Added the Commodore key to the keyboard.

DIN port was added.

Game Joysticks were added.

Could use 8 to 16 colours.

No Graphic yet and graphic need more memory and one has to overcome this problem by using test characters as figures. 

Ingenuity in thinking.

RAM expanding Cards were used.

By the time it was discontinued in 1985 it sold 2 million computers.

Had an excellent manual for coding in Microsoft Basic.

Commodore had a digital cassettes drive while others including Apple II used analog audio cassette drives.

Along the line introduced a printer.

A dot matrix printer.

Linus Torvalds and Elon Musk use ViC 20 as kids.

This is the computer I bought at discount price before I left United Kingdom for good. It's power pack busted due to poor Power Supply of Ceylon.

I have up computing until I discovered Linux in year 2000.

In between I used Windows as requirement for work in the Office ( University) but I hated it.

It had 128 RAM.

Design was completely different and bigger but keyboard had problems.

Lead developer went to join Atari the competitor in Taiwan.

It was a nightmare for the middle management.

I am glad I left UK and Commodore in 1988.

I did not have to suffer the consequences for the Commodore Users World Wide.

Just a coincidence and happy accident.

It was useless for video games and that may have been the reason for give away price. For a give who was itching fir computer it was considered a bonus some computer grace.

CPU/M was the software that ran on these two chips.

However Commodore sold 4 million devices in spite of poor game capability and poor software functionality.

IceWarm Window Manager

IceWarm is one of the coolest Window Mangers of all.

It has a small footprint.

When I get bored with Gnome, I run a IceWarm session just to remind me of the good old days when with 4MB Video Ram and 512MB RAM I ran all the Linux Utilities in a huge IBM computer (my first PC) in early 1980s with 2GB Rotating Hard disk.

It is bloated simply becuase it has to support all the types od languages.

What one can do is , if one is a gnome user, go to Synaptic packge manager and run Firefox and remove all the unessary languages, and it will run quikly.

What I do instead is downlod

Falkon from old KDE and more imprtantly Dillo and run smoothlessly.

File Managers in Linux

Just let me say in my Search for Linux for My book "Linux Essentials", I  have tried three ARCH derivatives and one I actually installed. In fact, there are three in my under 4GB USB Sticks, ready to be mounted at any moment. I do not like Virtual instances except for Puppy Linux which one can  mount and try any application within Puppy.

What I hate most is "Elive Linux" which cheats money of its users.

No different to "Elementary OS "which has put out another alpha recently.

For the umpteenth time they got my email to post its image in one hour and failed.

If you have money either buy, Pop OS (System 76) or Tuxedo (Tuxedo System) Linux with their Linux hardware.

 

There is another Site, I think it is called "Star Labs "which sells laptops with various Linux desktops installed and a single very expensive Mini PC.

Coming to File Managers;

There are lot of file Managers is Linux.

Latest I found was 4Pane File Manager.

It is actually is Dual Pane 2Pane File manger. (2x2 = 4).

It is good for redo/undo and archiving files.

It shows the entire tree including hidden files. 

In the good old days I used to look at hidden files and I have forgotten how I did it.

Historically file Managers are 2Paned.

1. Mid Night Commander was one I used, first.

Now they are Desktop Based but can be used in desktops not even intended for.

2. Gnome Files is the good old Nautilus.

3. Thunar is for XFCE4

4. Krusader probably of KDE

5. Dolphin is now the standard for KDE.

6. Nemo is intuitive with web based applications, Cloud Friendly.

It probably comes from Cinnamon or Mint.

7. PCMan but do not confuse with PacMan

It comes from Taiwan with LXDE (light weight desktop)

It looks like it originated from Arch and later ported to Gnome.

It was based on GTK3 and later transformer into QT toolkit.

8. Rox filer is the file manager for AntiX.

 

 

9. Caja is the file manger for MATE.

 

 

10. There is no file mange for Budgie but Nautilus can be used as substitute. However, I used Krusader of KDE for Budgie.

 11. Tea is another old time file manager which has lost the default set up but can be evoked into cut and paste activity of a file.

12. PCmanFM is LXQt desktops file manager.

Desktop is called FM.

 

AntiX was one of my Linux flame in good old days. 

I haven't used it for a long time after moving to Debian Gnome. 

Mind you now very famous MX Linux is based on it.

My recent encounter came as a result of my recent CRAZE for old Puppy Linux derivatives. 

I have collected about 30 already.

What annoyed me the most was the "Legacy Linux "distribution (please do not use it) developed by a guy who used TeenPup in the past and ported a AntiX distribution on top of Puppy making it huge (3.2GB).

It destroyed my GRUB Loader.

In fact, it erased it's FAT boot portion with EXT4.

It cannot even maintain a persistent volume.

I should own the blame I tried to install it to one of my spare partition.

It took 3 days for me to recover my NUC.

I did not lose a single data file. 

I am not a one who backup files in the cloud. 

I use another Gnome instance as a backup in the NUC computer system.

If my SATA in NUC goes bust I need to find another SATA, hard to come by, and I left two 1 terabyte SATA in Ceylon with all  my OLD DATA over 25 years and my gut feeling is they probably are gathering dust.

Minimum Requirement for Debian Gnome is?

Minimum Requirement for Debian Gnome is at least 15GB.

8GB is not enough!

12GB for /root

3GB for  /home

This is without /tmp and /var folders

 

Debian KDE needs slightly more

Mind you LibreOffice takes bulk of the installation of 1GB and one cannot remove it without upsetting the configuration.

I hate cats from my childhood.

The day our cat caught my squirrel and killed it I started hating all cats including our cat (never my cat in my vocabulary).

I cried and got hold of the tail of the cat and trashed her on the floor till my anger subsided but felt short of killing her.

The cat got the message and would not come near me and then one day I handed over her to one of my aunts whose house had lot of rats.

I cannot remember having a cat till late in my life.

Then we had two orphaned male cats one was killed by a dog and other was poisoned and dished out during Perehara for supper.

My daughter looked after 33 litters (she had counted) in her childhood and the last litter she came and told me that all five of them were blind to a different degree.

The had no defense from Kala Waddas (Ceylon Civet) and we looked after them in a cage and were disposed and I told her no more caring for cats (litters).

This year, New year’s eve I found three kitten in an open area of the house (neighbor’s cat) not protected by civets.

My decision was wait till they are bigger and dispose them quickly.

I frightened the mother cat (thinking she may take them away) but she was cunning and secretly come and go but not caring for the litter but I  found her catching birds in a nearby house.

Then she did not come to feed for three days and I found one dead and two others just surviving.

Called a yesteryear servant girl now a big woman and told her to take them away and give them to somebody with two small packets of milk, vitamin enriched and cash for another big packet (now over Rs.300/=).

Today, I was watching over my cup of tea and there we over 10 young squirrels come out of the nest due to rain. Many of them were barely able to jump and their mothers did not had any control over them.

I knew the worse would happen.

One missed the jump and fell over 40 feet down and before I could reach, the cat had already caught it.

The irony here is there are very few trees below that would have prevented the young squirrel from landing on the ground . 

Thirty (30) years ago when we moved here there were many trees and during this period at least 7 jack trees were felled in addition to other trees.

This is what we call development in Buddhist Style.

Before the turn of the last century monkeys would go from Hanathana Range to Knuckles range without ever climbing down to the ground and then there were more monkeys than business monkeys of present.

That is it; killers in my neighborhood.

To my surprise there were 4 cats guarding below watchfully.

I could not believe Westerners love them and feed them and there was an old woman in America, neurotic about the lost cats and not the house.

People are saying how cute when one cat was found.

Unlike dogs they can fend themselves in the wild and they are wild animals domesticated and never can be trained not to kill.

The other reason I hate them is they steal food.

Cat in the neighborhood come and secretly drink my dog’s milk.

Now I sit with him till he finishes.
My dog deliberately leave them for the cats (probably learned from me).

1. They kill (not appropriate for Buddhist ethics) birds, squirrels and rats and any animal at their disposal
2. They steal (not appropriate for Buddhist ethics)
3. They can be never trained
4. They know how to coax
5. They make very ugly noise in the night
6. They urinate on linen
7. Their scat has an awful smell
8. They are never at home but always at the neigbour’s house stealing
9. They breed so often
10. Above all they are nuisance to the neighbors
11. They never look after our household

I think we should have a cat’s law (we have a law for dogs- why don’t we round the cats up and kill them since they also transmit Rabies) for Cat Buddhists.

But our cat’s law goes like this, Yes it is my cat but I did not ask him or her to kill or steal: it is it’s (their) instinct to help Cat Buddhists and Cat Philosophy.

I call it my cat logic or catelogic (how it is pronounced in typical Sri-Lankan Style!)

They perpetuate catalogue of errors of discretion.

We Buddhists in Sri-Lanka have bizarre law and ethics and very selfish too.

I cannot think of anything good except the purring.

Sri-Lankan keeps cats and they never feed them.

They say if they feed them they won’t catch the mice ( I must call them Cat Buddhists to add to my list of Buddhists in Sri-Lanka) at night but go and give Bodhi Puja every weekend.

I feel like killing my neighbors (this feeling was there for the last 30 years) having cats and not feeding them but until now I have resisted it.

I have taken some bold steps (decisions) in my life from my childhood and that had come good, when I reflect on them. 

Some of them cannot be mentioned here.
I was a keen observer of nature and people around me and learned to be bold and fearless.

Most of my teachers except who taught me Sinhala and English were mediocre.

I often wondered how they ever became teachers especially science.

1. One bold step was not to believe teachers especially in science.
That was a very scientific decision by itself.

I had the knack and keen power of observation and the problem solving ability. For example I believed anything can be grown on our be soil, be that it may, seeds or yam or runner provided I water them regularly. My father was not a farmer but he was a keen gardener (which he learned from a burger gentleman). 

Except potatoes I could do that on my own but could not figure out why I could not grow potatoes (those days potatoes came from UK and I did not know that they put chemicals to inhibit sprouting and made sure seed potatoes were never given to us. I discovered this many many years later. This is how western countries help us).

2. I decided never to ask scientific questions (why potatoes could not grow) from my teachers (knowing very well they will give a wrong answer to shut my mouth).

3. I decided to do science and one day I decided not to go to the school I was attending abruptly (there were many other reasons and flashes of them I have expanded elsewhere) and that was a very bold decision. Finding a school teaching science was difficult but I eventually found one (there was another story behind this I would not enlarge upon).

4. I decided NOT to proceed with cadetting even though I was the leader in my old school (I was thrashed by the teacher / principal three times in the new school but I stood my ground). 

I took part in all other sports except cadettting (reason should be obvious and there is / was the worse form of ragging which included sexual for the young).

5. New school was no better in teaching science and I made the decision to do D.I.Y learning science (thank god there were two  Libraries  run by Foreign Agents stocked lot of old science books in Kandy then)

6. Due to harassing by teachers I decided to walk out of the science class and asked permission from the principal who thrashed me for not joining cadets. 

He eventually acceded (I still thank him for that help) to my demand (man with military training) knowing my will power.

Little he knew that others will join me later.

7. We decided to work towards a common (first exercise in group work) goal and entire university in the first attempt (both Bio and Maths). 

Eventually all of us did pass and none from the class who attended normal class.
They thought we (me especially) had gone bonkus.

8. Next decision was to get rid of all the science teachers in one go (Boomi Puthra was one of them) and get some decent ones. 

By this time I have forged some connections with science school inspector who was very helpful.
Proof of the pudding was that nobody from the normal class passed.
Some teachers feared me more than the principal and I was a good cohort for him.

9. We never went for tuition classes and we never got involved in giving tuition to others except my cousin brother who eventually became an engineer. 

He failed all his subjects in “O” Level and till he entered the university he was under my clutches.

10. Next decision was to get rid of the compulsory government service act that we had to serve (IMF would love this) for six years and never to join the government service except university (semi-autonomous institution and not a government per say).
The way things are happening and developing in the university now leaving that is also not a big decision for me.

Rest that followed is history.
I suppose nobody should try these methods now since all the systems including schools in this country are very poorly managed by over 100 of ministers and ministries.

There is no half way house for us now as the saying in English goes.

TinyMe – a lightweight and minimal Linux distribution crated to be small and fast, and runs on old computers.

Between 2006 and 2007 TinyMe was based on PCLinuxOS and its website was hosted on MyPCLinuxOS.
The system uses Openbox window manager, Synaptic package manager, Tiny Control Center and some lightweight applications to fit to ~ 200 MB iso image.
In March 2009 the project has been moved to its own domain and separated from PCLinuxOS.
In March 20012 the present project developer KDulcimer released the last version of TinyMe which was based on Unity Linux and Mandriva.

TrueOS is where I cut my teeth to erase Microsft windows UEFI monopoly.

Even after paying for the computer Microsoft Owns YOUR computer and one has to do what they aught to think right for YOU.

I just updated my 12.9.1..6 or something to see that the latest version is out.

Debian 21.10.... does not support Abiword hence I won't install it at all.

Reports are Coming that NATO Officers are Trapped in Kursk

Yes, reports are coming from Pro-Russian Underground Movement that lot of NATO Officers are Trapped in Kursk.

The exact number is unknown but may be much more than the 40 mentioned.

They are not foot soldiers but those who commanded the logistic hub including (drone operators) commanding.

It also understood that President Trump is trying to SAVE them from capture as prisoners (but logically they would be treated as mercineries).

NATO has not declared war against Russia and they are not protected by normal War Conventions.

EU chairperson Ursula vo der Laden may have to resign now. She openly supported Ukraine War both financially and tacticaly.

She is a No Brainer.

I wonder what the new NATO secretary could do to save NATO Officers.

I think Macron might have to resign since he is the politician who spearheaded the New NATO operations, if he has some self respect. He of course, does not have any self respect just as Boris Johnson who is born war monger.

Who Can Guess President Putin's Master Strategy

He is a master politician but has a military brain.

He could have wiped off the opposing ground troups but he choosed to gradually winding them down or use the tactics of attrition.

I do not have a military brain but I am learning.

In sports especially in cricket bashing or demolishion of the opposition is the strategy. In test cricket you play a waiting game.

British who maternined the Kursk Operation did not use the strategy and stamina of test cricket.

France as in second world war is a splash in the pan.

He was not interested in capturing the ground which he cannot protect. Kursk operation showed his under preparation which they protected losing nearly 30 million in the process to Germans during the second world war.

He did not repeat the same mistakes this time round. He did not want his soldiers to die but used modern tactics.

I am not undermining brave Ukrainian soldiers whom the Americans used as their pawns. Loosing one's comrades in bravado is not the choice. 

Loose the battle to win the war is the grand old style. 

American method of ruling the sky failed this time due to drone warfare which Russian have mastered in less than  3 years. My guess is President Putin wished to drag this till victory day in May. 

He is keeping this option close to his heart.

He does not want Wagner or Alaudin's demolition process.

He want that force to remain solid for another fight which if Macron wishes to engineer as the new putative  head of EU.

One does not play all the cards in poker unless you are good bluffer. Bluffing also works in war.

Rounding up of NATO military planners dug in in Kursk is a major blow to Macron and his newly designed NATO bullworks.

It is easy to advance when the adversaries are morally down. President Putin deferred and he is reaping dividends.

This is where Trump as a politician would fail but he is happy, deep in his mind, NATO is really down under, without implied American help.

I do not like its package Manager.

I ran it for a while and erased it due to this difficulty of accessing software I need.   

Some of them like Stacer, Revolt and Notepadqq are missing

 

6. Pop OS

I tried to use it with my PC with an OLD NVIDIA card it froze.

Current one mounts well on Box Utility.

No problem with English Language.

I have not tried on a PC or my NUC (scarred it would damage the Integrate Graphic card of my NUC due to overload.

It boot in German on Box Utility and it froze in mid air.

Also come from Germany but lacks in applications.

11. There are host of others I used Including Madriva, Mandrake(gone bust), SUSE (Tumbleweed is pretty good) and Red Hat (lost interest completely due to its coporate mentality).

Please note that from a KDE one cannot mount or boot cinnamon, mate or genome even if you install these windows or desktops using Synaptic Package Manager.

Their libraries do not match.

That is why I say mount or boot genome and then chose n number of other fancy desktops.

KDE for me is a pain in the arxxxx.
