Indian shot(Canna indica)
Saru Diwiyata Deshiya Ala states that the Indian shot plant grows to about five to six feet in height and has long, slightly broad leaves with brown stems. The booklet also states that the round yams of this plant can be found in two varieties: rathu buthsarana (red Indian shot) and sudu buthsarana (white Indian shot).
“Indian shot yams] are very tasty and are very high in starch. Unlike the other varieties of local yams, have a slightly sweet taste.”
Both the red and the white variety of these yams have many medicinal properties and have been noted in curing jaundice (yellow fever) and preventing phlegm-inducing diseases in infants.
Because of the high starch content in Indian shot yams and their ability to help reduce phlegm, they are an ideal food to be given to patients suffering from phlegm-inducing illnesses, and those who are physically weak and need a lot of nourishment.
Hulankeeriya (Maranta arundinacea)
According to the book Saru Diwiyata Deshiya Ala, the Veddas call this tuberarukka.
It contains protein, vitamins, calcium, and a high content of carbohydrates.
The yams of the arrowroot plant are narrow and white in colour, while the plant grows to about one to two feet in height and has long, dark green leaves.
Saru Diwiyata Deshiya Alamentions many health benefits which can be obtained by consuming arrowroot. Because of its high protein content, doctors recommend the yams for patients who need to consume a lot of protein foods.
Consuming the yam is also beneficial in preventing and alleviating illnesses related to the digestive tract, like indigestion and ulcers. Flour made from these yams is also a nutritious food for patients with heart ailments.
Udala (Dioscorea bulbifera)
The yams are grown not on soil but on the vine, so it is called Udala, meaning not air but above the soil. The tubers of the Udala creeper too, are large in size and have a taste which is very similar to potatoes. Another interesting fact about the Udala creeper is that it produces smaller tuber-like rhizomes on its surface.
It not as tasty as Rajala.
There is also a second kind of Udala.
This variety has white spots on its large, round leaves. The yams, too, have white spots on their peel. However, the yams of this variety of Udala are not eaten but only used in traditional medicine.

Purple yam/ (Dioscorea alata)
The English name for the Sinhala yam known as "Wal-ala" (වැල් අල) is Greater Yam or Winged Yam.
Wal in Sinhla means vine.
It is also called Purple Yam due to the beautiful colour of its flesh.
The common English name is Dioscorea alata, the species to which Wal-ala belongs.
The name Rajala has been given to these yams because of their immense size.
While many of the other varieties of creepers, bushes or plants that have edible tubers or roots usually produce multiple yams growing under each one, the Rajala creeper usually produces several large sized yam.
With their weight they drop to the soil where another vine sprouts.
I essence only one yam is seen during a season.
Two separate varieties one with a light purple peel and the other with dark purple peel.
After these yams are boiled they have a floury texture and can be eaten alone as a meal or can be made into gruel and sweet meats like muscat.
My friend and a distant elderly brother is a veteran in farming and naming plants according to local tradition.
He had several of these creepers in his garden. He was the youngest and his education was deliberately crushed by his elder brothers and sister so that there is somebody to look after the big plot of land.
Besides, he was very good at making kites and we were best of friends and every day after schooling I go and meet him knowing he was ill treated.
When I became a doctor, I confronted them and said he could have become a graduate if not doctor and what they did was very bad.
They used to avoid me. I kept in touch with him until, I left Ceylon and pay a visit at least once a month with some chocolates and he keeps some local sweet in smell and taste bananas that are not found Australia.

I use to collect these yams and grow them in our rooftop garden. When they are ready I uproot them, wash and clean them for cooking.
I has to be cooked in a proper way otherwise it gives a caustic taste. Our domestic aid was very good at cooking them and make it creamy and that is why it is called Kiri habalaala.
Sadly she passed away recently and this piece is dedicated to her.
Habarala or Alocasia cucullatais the plant also known as hooded dwarf elephant ear.
Because it’s skin is water repellent it is used as a makeshift umbrella.
It has a beautiful large white flower which blooms very rarely. Just before I left Ceylon, it bloomed, may be just to say Good Bye, since I used to water it liberally.
It’s yam is supposed to be poisonous but our domestic aid says it can be eaten if properly cooked. I uprooted one of them and gave her a big piece of yam for her to cook in her own home.
I was scarred to eat.
Sadly when she died the tricks of domestic cooking disappear with her.
I believe the toxin is a cyanogenic glycoside similar to what is found in cassava.

If anybody wants to dispute that Buddhism has no relevance today, this short chapter is to dispel that myth.
Now
that the fundamentals of Dhamma are addressed in its own context what
relevance has it for today, tomorrow and in the future generations?
Only when we have addressed this question can one say that justice is done to the original tenet of Dhamma.
Dhamma
originated in India when animal sacrifices were the normal cult.
Some elaborate rituals based on the belief that god has to be satisfied to derive ultimate salvation of human beings was the order of the day.
By these rituals some form of union with god in a metaphorical sense was expected.
The fact that these sacrifices can only be done by a chosen caste is also another prerequisite.
The head of the Kovil can only be
chosen from a particular caste put final nail to the democratic
representation in front of the gods. Only a chosen one can be the go
between the Gods and the Harijans. An arbitrator has to be chosen for
the benefits of less fortunate.
It is here Mr. Ambekkar have had
misgivings with Mr. Mahathma Gandhi in the Indian Freedom Struggle.
Even though, Mr. Ambekkar ended up as the Minister of Law, Indian Constitution failed to address the deep rooted division created by caste consciousness.
Even after 50 years of independence the root cause of discrimination was not rooted out.
By becoming a Buddhist in his later years Mr. Ambekkar showed the way forward for Harijans in India.
It is
pertinent as to what made him to change course and lead the freedom path
for the less fortunate.
Mr. Gandhi used the Buddhist Avihinsa
theme for the freedom struggle but failed to gear it for the greater
cause which was Mr.Ambekkar’s vision for his fellowmen.
His sacrifice of the Hindu religion has caused greater stir than the freedom struggle that ended.
Even after 50 years this rumbling is in the air.
Dhamma
is not a dogmatic system of adherence or an elaborate system of rituals
and prayers.
It is a way of life.
It talks about the purity of thinking, speaking and acting accordingly.
It is a religion of kindness,
compassion and equality of all including the sexes.
In one
central theme of Avihinsa three objectives were satisfied, from the very
beginning.
All beings are treated equally including animals and there is no need for a superior caste to make rituals in animal sacrifices.
Animals were free to live and they were not considered food items.
This
was one of the reasons why Buddhism did not last long in India and for
the success of Moguls in India.
The change from hunter, chaser to a food gather was effectively made.
Dhamma
doubts the existence of a super race, super caste and lesser caste.
Deep divisions still continues in India.
Strangely enough this division
is seen in Sanga in Sri-Lanka.
The third offshoot was the
evolution of Vegetarianism in India even among the Hindus.
The cow becomes a sacred animal.
Instead of animal sacrifices food items
especially fruits and flowers became the form of offerings which we
continue even today.
These are the three positives.
The
western scholars have failed to grasp and highlight this aspect of
Dhamma which is a peaceful way of life and existence.
They went on
scholarly exercise to illustrate the Dukka (should be
unsatisfactoriness) and the Suffering theme and focused on what is
called the negative aspect of Dhamma. By looking at a Buddhist monk who
renunciate all worldly things and belongings and stating that the Dhamma
way is negative in outlook is the biggest mistake western scholars have
made.
It is positive in many ways and promotes peace and harmony in this world where anger, hate, mistrust and violence are the bane.
One
does not need to be a monk to preach non-violence.
There is no room for
division and war in a civil society that follows simple way of Buddhist
life.
That is why Dhamma is more relevant in the 21st century world outlook.
We
have not changed the way the world shaped itself from one political
upheaval to another after the Second World War. Instead of large scale
war based on super race (Aryans) and the discrimination of the Jews, we
have small scale perennial wars and terrorist based activities
inundating the world order.
Even outside the ethnic war there are
sentiments of caste and this is where the Buddhism has failed in
Sri-Lanka to strike a chord of balance in thinking in Tamil Diaspora.
Some sense of supremacy is tagged with the race, religion, colour, caste, rich, poor and even amongst the priests and monks.
There is ascendancy for the rich in front of the gods but not for the poor.
Like jealousy supremacy is a disease.
There is also a treatment in Dhamma for this disease.

Yes, he has not done anything original in archaeology except trying to read "Kurutu Gee' in Sigiriya.
I have the doubt this was a ruse to find the back entry to to Sigiriya to plunder any remaining archaeological remains to be sold to the British for a paltry sum.

Nowadays when some misguided individuals are making attempts to prove that Buddha was born in Sri Lanka, S. Paranavitana in his day announced that he was not able to say that Buddha visited Sri Lanka, due to lack of archaeological evidence.
S. Paranavitana was once asked who in his opinion were the greatest monarchs of Sri Lanka. He said that they were King Dutugemunu, who drove away the Dravidians, and King Wijayabahu the Great, who drove away the Chola invaders, who for 77 long years ruled at Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, adding that they both hailed from Ruhuna.
He got a PhD by doctoring the data gathered from British Archeological survey.
It was in fact, not a Research Study but archeological survey to plunder artifacts to be taken to the British Museum.
According to Jayaratne Pathiraarchchithi British have plundered over 7000 copies of Sel-Lipi from Ceylon and they have hidden them to this day from public view.
The attempt was to posit the idea that Buddha was born in India and these archeological finding that confirmed Buddha was born in Ceylon were deliberately supprsesed.
My guess is that British were more interested in capturing India than Ceylon.
There was less interest to them economically im Ceylon until Indian labour was brought in here to destroy our hill country.
Paranavitharana collaboration was to continue the British narrative until Jayaratne Pathiraarchchithi came into the scene
This guy investigated the missing Stone Edits and over 500 were related to the fact that Buddha was born in Ceylon which the British did not want to establish due probably to the pressure exerted by Kings and Queens of England.
Paranabvitharana contribution was to suppress that Buddha was born in Ceylon.
That is why say he is a big cheat.
Jayaratne Pathiraarchchi's Story
1. He started publishing, in around 2000 that there are Stone Edits to the fact that Buddha was born in Ceylon.
2. He started collaborating with Monks and layman during this time.
3. These greedy monks and layman started publishing his copyright ideas as their own original ideas.
4. Jayaratne Pathiraarchchi is a clever guy he has recorded all of them in his videos. Besides he kept a diary and details of each and everyone of them.
5. A few monks were at loggerheads with him over copyrights.
6. This lead to an altercation and Jayaratne Pathiraarchchi was forcibly interned in Ungoda.
7. That really upset the hornet nest.
8. In 2010 he piblished more and more books.
9. He started directly antagonizing them with video records of sordid activitis by quite a number of monks that include orgies and alcoholism.
These infirmation was fed in by young samanera monks with video recordings.
10. If he publishes them now he believes he would be killed by some of those greedy guys.
Good example is this Kiribathgoda Nnanadara guy of Mahamevna SAGA.
It is just festering now.
11. He is waiting until 2035.
He wants to keep everything in suspense.
12. For some unknown reason if he leaves us before 2035, one of his agents will come forward.
