Use Linux, Do not waste time testing them!

Use Linux, Do not waste time testing them!

Below is a comment I copied from Distrowatch Site.

I was like him and tested over 300 Linux Distributions in my spare time.

Then I realized less than 1 percent of computer users use Linux and in Sri-Lanka only 32 users (at that time).

I decided to open a blog spot (Google) called Linux 100 and wrote a comment after each and every testing.

I continued use many distributions in a network of 10 computers and dismantled all but two to cut down on my electricity bill.

Now I use the light weight Peppermint (derivative of Ubuntu and Debian).

Debian is my Gold Standard.

Slackware is my old friend.

My advice for a newbie is to try test Live Sessions and decide two distributions.

One for daily use the other for testing.

Please do not waste time testing BUT use Linux as a workhorse.

It is FREE but pay a some gratitude to the developers.

My advice for the guy below is to have a blog post for venting anger and a repository for his own evolving thinking about Linux.

110 • Re: all the distros I ever ran and whether I liked it or not. (by Unny likes corn on 2016-07-25 20:39:14 GMT from North America)

1. First I ran Mandrake 10 or something but didn't like it. I had Windows XP too and I didn't like it.
2. Then I ran suse 9.1 pro and liked it. (I think I ran it but I can't remember for sure, but if I did I'm sure I would have liked it)
3. Then I ran suse 9.2 and liked it.
4. Then I ran suse 9.3 and liked it.
5. Then I ran Debian 3.0 and didn't like it. Later I would realize I should have liked it.
6. Then I ran Fedora 4 and didn't like it.
7. Then I ran FreeBSD 6.1 and liked it.
8. Then I ran Slackware at the same time as FreeBSD and liked it. I was also running Suse 10.0 at this time and I liked it. That was the only time I liked 3 different operating systems on my computer at the same time.
9. Then I only ran opensuse 10.1 and I didn't like it.
10. Then I panicked and ran Ubuntu 6.06 and thought I didn't like it. I later realized that I was being protective of my favorite suse 10.0. I was just jealous that it worked faster.
11. Then I ran Kubuntu and I didn't like it.
12. Then I ran Vector and I liked it.
13. Then I ran Yoper and didn't like it.
14. Then I ran Solaris and didn't like it.
15. Then I ran dynebolic and didn't like it.
16. Then I ran Zenwalk and I liked it.
17. Then I ran Pardus and didn't like it.
18. Then I ran Fox Desktop and didn't like it.
19. Then I ran open suse 10.2 and liked it.
20. Then I ran Ubuntu 7.04 and I liked it now.
21. Then I ran Debian and liked it this time. But now I was tired of configuring my computer.
22. Then I ran Ubuntu 7.04 and liked it again.
23. Then I ran opensuse 10.3 and liked it. But Firefox opened 0.4 seconds slower than Ubuntu so I didn't like it as much.
24. Then I remembered Firefox didn't open as fast on all my suse installations so I retroactively didn't like them as much. Except for suse 9.3 which I still liked.
25. Then I remembered I ran PCLinuxOs between 19 and 20 and I liked it a little but I was still protecting opensuse in my mind.
26. Then I remembered I ran Damn Small, Puppy, Frugalware, Xandros, SymphonyOS, and some other distros and some I liked and some I didn't like, but I mostly didn't like them.
27. Then I realized I was spending way too much time on the computer so I didn't like Linux anymore.
28. Then I installed windows xp on a spare partition and I kind of liked it again.
29. Then I contracted a virus on widows xp the next day and didn't like it anymore either.
30. Then I realized I tried to run plan 9 somewhere in the teens, and thought I would have liked it except I could get it to run.
31. Then I realized I had wondered occasionally about running Gentoo but was glad I didn't because of some off-the-wall humour site that poked fun at Gentoo users because they thought they were the coolest.
32. Then I realized that at one time or another I had thought about installing Netbsd, openbsd, dragonfly bsd, centos, sidux and a bunch of other distros and retroactively hated myself for spending way too much time thinking about linux and bsd's.
33. Then I thought about getting rid of my computer.
34. Then I decided to just run Ubuntu because I liked it.
35. Then I stopped thinking about linux so much and started living more day to day.
36. Then I realized that I didn't want to be a geek anymore.
37. I didn't like the name Iceweasel so that's why I liked Ubuntu better than Debian. But I like Debian's logo better. A decision had to be made.
38. Now I like linux again.
39. I like traffic lights.
40. But only when they're green.

Dear Karl Marx, long live your sayings

I have not read Karl (politics was a self ingested poison for me).

I have reproduced (only a part) one of my contemporaries writing here.

I agree religion (politics in Sri-Lanka) opium for ordinary people!

Dear Karl Marx

Your trenchant descriptions of capitalist accumulation and your critical penetration into its practice were based on and ignited by your original and radical theses. I hope you have not forgotten them because we haven't. Let me remind you the most poignant and accredited few.

1. Society does not consist of individuals but expresses the sum of interrelations, the relations within which these individuals stand.

2. The ruling ideas of each age have ever been the ideas of its ruling class.

3. The premises from which we begin are not arbitrary ones,. They are the real individuals, their activity and the material conditions under which they live, both those which they find already existing and those produced by their activity.

4. The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it.

5. It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but, on the contrary, their social being that determines their consciousness.

6. Religion is the opium of people.

All your statements quoted here are undoubtedly original and very thought provoking but I wish to end this letter with an observation you made when you were a just 17 year old youth.

'' If a person works only for himself, and ignores this great goal assigned to him, "he can perhaps be a famous scholar, a great wise man, a distinguished poet– but never a complete, genuinely great man." ‘(Reflections of a Youth on the Choice of an Occupation).

You are being offered with felicitations like these because you lived your life until your death in 1883 according to the statement you made at the age of seventeen, which had a big impact on my life too.

Last Puzzle is the Life Puzzle

Last Puzzle is the Life Puzzle

I am intrigued by how life evolved on our planet.

I won't exclude the fact that life would have traveled from outer space in a tiny meteorite.

Leave that argument aside for the time being.

How to approach the problem?

Top down approach?

Bottom up approach?

Either way I am going to get bogged down somewhere around one (1) billion years into the past.

The premises are many.

1. Origin of cellular life is incredible.

Almost impossible in a hostile environment.

2. It happened very very slowly.

3. In its progress toward self perpetuation, there were many obstructions including bombardment of meteorites.

4. It went through five mass extinctions.

Currently it is well into its sixth extinction.

5. There could have been half life half chemical scenario.

How the interaction went on we do not know.

6. Cellular life is so labile it does not leave tell tale stories or leave behind markers in stromatolites.

7. Earth is a living planet and it does not have its oldest rocks available for study.

Its oldest rock is only two and a half billion years old.

Earth life of four and a half billion is estimated from meteorites.

There is two billion years of missing history which we have to surmise.

8. In addition there were catastrophes.

9. I am comfortable with the last 500 million years of its evolution of that the last 3 to 5 million is matter of fact biology being unraveled.

10. How could I dissect the first 500 hundred of the last billion years.

11. In addition there are many other questions.

WHEN?

WHERE?

HOW?

Life originated?

12. What was the smallest living particle?

We seem to assume that we know a lot.

On the contrary we know very little.

We are stuck with the hereditary and survival of the fittest scenario that would suit only the last 5 million years, assuming mitochonridal mutations is rare.

In fact, major mitochondrial mutations are very very rare.

It is our energy store.

If its goes haywire life cannot exist in the current oxygen rich planet with cellular life.

This preamble is for further dissection by my friends far and near.

Twenty or more alien hypotheses

Twenty or more alien hypotheses
This is posted with an expectation of somebody might get some real inspiration to produce a FILM.

The film should make fiction looks real and a scientific fact only emerging.

It should hit the audience by surprise and narrow the hypotheses to three or four.

      1. Extraterrestrial life is rare or non-existent
      Unlikely.

      2. No other intelligent species have arisen
      Most unlikely

      3. Intelligent alien species lack advanced technology
      Unlikely

      4. It is the nature of intelligent life to destroy itself
Very likely given time and space

      5. It is the nature of intelligent life to destroy others
      Real scenario

      6. Periodic extinction by natural events
      Enough evidence in our planet.
It takes 4 to 5 five billion yeas for life as cells to emerge from stellar remnants.

      7. Inflation hypothesis and the youngness argument
      No comments

      8. Intelligent civilizations are too far apart in space or time
      It is a real hindrance.

      9. It is too expensive to spread physically throughout the galaxy
Not really, if a civilization is threatened at least a significant minority will consider colonizing elsewhere hospitable.

      10. Human beings have not existed long enough
      That is a fact.

      11. Humans are not listening properly
      More than likely

      12. Civilizations broadcast detectable radio signals only for a brief period of time
It could be a deciding factor.

      13. They tend to isolate themselves
      Real paranoia

      14. They are too alien to interact with others

      15. Everyone is listening, no one is transmitting

      16. Earth is deliberately not contacted

      17. Earth is purposely isolated (planetarium hypothesis)

      18. It is dangerous to communicate

      19. They are here undetected

      20. They are here unacknowledged

The Lifespan of Advanced Civilizations

The Lifespan of Advanced Civilizations

The Premise is that due to blind faith (ISIS is a case in point) or due to greed or insanity (North Korea is a case in point) new civilizations in their forward march destroy themselves in midterm before they are fully evolved or civilized.

We are now in this current threshold of self destruction.

My alien theory (I strongly believe they visited us in 1947, to investigate, two years after the Atomic Bomb Explosion) that they visited us but left convinced that we were not mature enough to interact with them.

Additionally Area 51 was not evolved to its present level of sophistication, then.

It was built after the possible crash of alien spaceship with more advanced technology.

I believe the alien spaceship was brought down by hostile fire.

By Nigel Calder and John Newell

The Lifespan of Advanced Civilizations

 A very short lifespan for advanced civilizations may be a realistic probability because as our own case shows, technology mushrooms very rapidly and is accompanied by many dangerous effects such as;

1. Overpopulation

2. Depletion of natural resources

3. Pollution and worse of all

4. Rapid escalation of nuclear stockpiles which can easily reach the level where they are capable of wiping out the whole population of a planet.

By the same token, if we were to find significant number of other advanced civilizations in our galaxy it would mean that some at least had been able to overcome the dangers that are now looming over our own civilizations.

If they have reached this advanced stage, it would mean that they have been able discard all of their animistic (BARBARISM) attributes such as materialism, selfishness, territoriality, dominance over others and killing instincts which in a technological civilizations are likely to lead to self destruction.

They would have been able to to mature into higher levels of cosmic intelligence characterized by spirituality, altruism, respect of others, adherence to peace and love for each other.

Joining such a galactic society would indeed be a colossal step forward in the intellectual and ethical evolution of our civilization.
This might also be the reason why we have not yet heard from any such advanced civilizations as may exist.

There must be a galactic rule that says that before a new civilization is invited to join the galactic society it must show that it is able to overcome the major crisis that probably befall all new technological civilizations.

Since we are still in the midst of this evolutionary problem, there may be advanced civilizations waiting to see how we do before inviting us to join the galactic society of advanced civilizations.

මේවා ජනවාරි 08 අප විසින් ප්‍රතික්ෂේප කරන ලද මහින්ද රෙජීමයේ ලක්ෂණද?

යහපාලනයේ ලක්ෂණද?

History and Prehistory of Lanka

History and Prehistory of Lanka

I am more interested in prehistory since we now possess tools to go beyond 10,000 years of history.

Both genetic and radioactive tools are available.

What we are lacking is materials or specimens of significance.

Let me dish out the written history to begin with.

It dates back to only about 2500 years or so.

Even the Bible writing extends the mankind's
existence to 7200 years or so.

Both Bible and Koran are not old enough to study human existence in scientific sense.

Both were anti-scientific and religious dogmas thought to be sacrosanct.

They are no longer not sacrosanct in scientific sense.

Let me come Lanka and forget the rest of the world.

Our Buddhist monks (Mahanama to begin with) cleverly erased the prehistory of Lanka and introduced a mythical history of 5000 years to Lanka.

How the name Lanka came I do not know but I feel it means an island.

I have devised a hypothesis that Lanka was a much bigger island which went under water due to at least three or four meteoritic hits that devastated mother earth including the Jurassic extinction story.

This country has at least series of three (fourth is under water due to the effect of sea erosion) uplifts according to Adam's and Wardia.

If we had prehistoric man evolving in this massive land the meteorites send them to oblivion except a traces in the north part of the island left after the series of meteorites hits.

Moon landing has recovered at least evidence dating back to 4.6 and 1.6 million light years (evidence).

Moon does not have an atmosphere to destroy evidence but earth atmosphere destroys all the cosmic evidence of meteorites.

We have to collect traces from the space which the current space scientists are exploring.

Going back to Lanka for the last 5000 years this country was known for its immense population of elephants.

Indian elephants were driven to almost extinction to by Roman War efforts.

They probably migrated here from India and survived since local indigenous population were not hostile to them.

They were mainly in the hill country and the British drove them to the dry land due to hunting and expansion of the  tea and coffee plantations.
There were at least three prehistoric humans dating back to 125000 years in and around this island.

According to my hypothesis they also migrated from Indian subcontinent or Africa.

Any existing ones were destroyed by the last meteorite hit, 65 million year ago ( Jurassic extinction).

So the last 5000 years visitors came here to capture elephants.

Mind you all my theories end up with elephants and their plight to current day.

In fact, I dig into prehistory because of my interest in elephants not because I want to become a prehistoric historian.

It was a marathon effort since finding data was extremely difficult.

So Vijaya migration was also one of those elephant expedition went expeditiously wrong for both elephants and indigenous traces of man who inhabited Lanka.

Our Buddhist monks erased our prehistory to ashes and build “Alu Lenas all over Lanka.

For 5000 years this country was plundered of natural history and a modern history dating back to 2500 years was transplanted.

My grouse with Paranavithana and Deraniygala is that they never were true archaeologists (they narrowed their sphere of activity to 2500 years, the legacy left behind by Buddhist monks).

So instead of rewriting our Mahayana or Ramayana history there is LOT left to be explored in this country in scientific sense.

There are lot of gaping holes.

They exist of British from this country was a true scientific loss since their traditions were not followed after our political independence.

Our politicians including dead and moribund leftists were rank stupid and ignited an ethnic war still simmering under the ashes which our history is famous far.

They think by turning things to ashes the truth can be kept hidden for ever.

There is always microscopic, forensic and genetic evidence left behind to explore.

Why I propose Alternative Physics

Why I propose Alternative Physics

Our brain is limited by its “Three Dimensional understanding of the Matter.

It is hard wired into our brain and limits our thinking.

This does not mean we cannot go beyond and explore the universe in multi-dimensions above and over the three dimensions.

In “string theory of mathematics” there supposed to be more than 11 dimensions.

That is the only way to understand the universe and beyond.

The true freedom of thinking would emerge only when we free ourselves of another concept in current physics.

Space (limited by three dimensions) and time (by our own imagination).

Unfortunately time is unidirectional only flows forwards.

We cannot go backwards unless we have older materials to examine, for example asteroids and meteorites.

So we got fixed at 4.6 billion light years (that is the limit of the speed of light) of the beginning of the earth (our solar system and universe) and failed to accept that the universe is much more and beyond.

We got frozen in time.

In that process we forget there is something called evolution in this world and beyond in the universe.

Then we come nearer to our Comfort Zone of life which is limited by mere 100 years.

Books, like Bible (only about 2270 and Koran (much later) which have no significance in our life and the whole universe.

Human evolution is probably less than 3 million years and more significantly for the last 50,000 years.

The modern humans have exterminated other humanoids (this happened in this very Lanka) which the archaeologists started discovering but American scientists who suppressed it in the name of Genesis and Christianity.

For Christianity and Muslim religions only contribution in the modern world is Bible War and current Social Media Wars.

The religion is void for humanity.

Race or skin color is void in the modern world.

We indeed are shaming humanity in the name of religion, race and territory, USA included.

What is needed is to free ourselves of three dimensional and unidirectional time of physics.

Current physics is limited by matter and life.

That is why vast 95% of the Dark Matter and Dark Force were not discovered by our ancient physicists.

I raise my hat to Eisenstein and Edwin Hubble who opened the door of three dimensions to more dimensions (unlimited by our imagination) within the last century.

Science has not dawned yet only atheists can carry the baton forward.
Our modern scientists were restricted by Church and Islam.

With the dawn of New Science or New Physics all the dogmas would dissipate into thin air, (rather the universe beyond what we seem to know currently).

The number of possible states of the matter and dark matter is limited only by our ability to perceive them in real time and not the evolved time.

The time is a concept that limits our imagination (and run riot especially to the past) and does not let us enjoy this moment of happiness (sunshine)!

Discrimination and arbitrary admission to the University.

Discrimination and arbitrary admission to the University.

If I remember right we were the last batch of students who were selected on merit basis.
This discriminatory admission procedure was enacted from ? Around 1970s or so (Sirima and NM
regime) one Minister Mathhew was an architect in the 1965 UNP government.

I stand to correction of the statement “that was the last year admission to the university was on purely merit basis”.
No area basis but national level before then.
I must also state majority were Tamils from the North, almost no Muslims.
Our batch had 16 Sinhala students out of 75 students (and I am not sure of Colombo).

The rest were Tamils students.
This was the beginning of discrimination on merit and race and within few years LTTE took a root in Ceylon.

All my batch mates except a few (handful and some already dead left in this country) went out and most of them are holding substantial posts or mostly retired now.

It was the last list published on local paper according to the marks obtained by the individual students.
Cut off point was around 240 marks (an average nearing 60 out of 100) or above and a very few achieved it.
If that mark was not achieved the list of students entered would not have filled all the vacancies in Colombo and Peradeniya.

There was a Bench Mark for admission to Engineering and Medical Faculties.
Peradeniya was the First Medical Faculty and Colombo was called a Medical Collage (just similar to Law College) and later registered as a Faculty (I stand to correction if there is an error in this statement).

In good old days entry to Medical College in Colombo was very biased and led to nepotism.
Lot of anecdotes in our ears then, mentioning them is inappropriate.
There was a big rivalry (not medical students) of the academics.
Even in the University the names were listed according to marks.

The above comments are redundant but the crux of the matter is lowering of the standard of students entering the University.

This is unscientific and human rights violation.

I am surprised why nobody has taken a legal challenge to this piece of discrimination in admission.

I believe they spend that money to send them abroad or do better things.

I believe as a teacher each University should hold an University Entrance (Like in USA) Examination or Premed to absorb the best students.

Unless we do that Quality of Universities and their Educational standards will fall.

Just recently in Korea and Hongkong, common US Examination was aborted fearing leaking of papers.

Examinations are not foolproof if shoddy guys conduct it.

That is the very reason, I say each University should have its Bench Marks for admission based on an independent supervidory comittee.

Worse scenario is that fee paying independent universities would violate this principle of "best get admitted" and have back door for admission.

This has happened in our parliament and legislature only the worst (thugs, rapists, criminals, underworld guys and girls without paper qualification) guys and are selected by the party heads.

There is no vetting system.

There is caveat here best academic results does not produce best or human doctors.

This is an observed phenomenon and Sri-Lankan doctors are a good example inhumane practices.

Human qualities cannot be inculcated (or duplicated) by a curriculum alone one has to be born with it.

I threatened to rank (malpractices) them when I was in Private Sector in Colombo.

I have seen many incorrigible guys ad girls in this country and abroad.

The bottom line is quality of doctors progressively declining and money matters taking precedence.

That is why I am for proper salary (lowest in this part of the world) and no private practice while on government or University service.

We had to go on industrial action (only strike under Ma Ra Regime).

Unless we treat intellectual with dignity “Brain Drain” will continue.

Only reason it dipped recently was our English Standard took a nose dive under SLFP.

Inherited Past by Carlo Fonseka
In 1981, with political patronage at presidential level, the first Private Medical College in this country in the 20th century, namely the North Colombo Medical College (NCMC), came into existence. It was a fee-levying institute purportedly catering mainly to high achieving students who had failed to gain admission in open competition to any state medical faculty due to the implementation of the government’s policy of "positive discrimination" and "affirmative action" in regard to the admission of students to universities. Based exclusively on the GCE (A/L) results of each year, 40% of admissions to medical faculties was on the basis of all-island merit; 55% on a district quota basis; and 5% reserved for certain underprivileged districts. One outcome of the application of this policy was that a proportion of students with lower grades at the GCE (A/L) examination gained admission to the state medical faculties to the exclusion of students with higher grades. To render justice to high academic achievers manifestly discriminated against by the scheme of admission to medical faculties was the ostensible purpose of the NCMC. The rub was, however, that the ability to pay for gaining admission was the price exacted from both the minority of high-achieving deserving students and the majority of barely qualified undeserving ones.

There is nothing called Safe Limit

Reproduction

Here’s How Many People Fatally Overdosed On Marijuana Last Year

With marijuana now legal in some form throughout 23 states, the number of Americans who fatally overdosed on the drug last year was significant:
A total of 17,465 people died from overdosing on illicit drugs like heroin and cocaine last year, while 25,760 people died from overdosing on prescription drugs, including painkillers and tranquilizers like Valium, according to CDC figures.
Opioid overdose levels rose so sharply in 2014—spiking 14 percent from the previous year— the CDC described the levels as “epidemic.
”
“More persons died from drug overdoses in the United States in 2014 than during any previous year on record,” the CDC reported earlier this month.

Alcohol, an even more accessible substance, is killing Americans at a rate not seen in roughly 35 years, according to a Washington Post analysis of federal data. The more than 30,700 Americans who died from alcohol-induced causes last year doesn’t include alcohol-related deaths like drunk driving or accidents; if it did, the death toll would be more than two and a half times higher.
According to a widely cited 2006 report in American Scientist, “alcohol is more lethal than many other commonly abused substances.”

The report further puts the lethality of various substances in perspective:

Drinking a mere 10 times the normal amount of alcohol within 5 or 10 minutes can prove fatal, whereas smoking or eating marijuana might require something like 1,000 times the usual dose to cause death.
Though marijuana has yet to lead to a fatal overdose in the U.S., it does have the potential to be abused and lead to dangerous behaviors like drugged driving — but taking too much will likely lead to, if anything, a really bad trip.
Despite the changing tide in American attitudes toward marijuana for both therapeutic and recreational uses, legalization is still vigorously opposed by groups like the pharmaceutical lobby (who stand to lose big if patients turn to medical marijuana for treatment) and police unions (who stand to lose federal funding for the war on drugs).

Even among 2016 presidential contenders, Democratic hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders is the only candidate from either party to support outright legalization of marijuana by removing it from the federal list of Schedule 1 drugs, which includes substances like heroin and LSD.
