Russian have taken My Gnome Promotion to Heart

 ALT Linux

I think Russian developed should take a leaf out of ARCH Reborn OS and provide online install and to pick one of the 10 favourite desktops.

I am installing it Now.

It was almost a disaster.

It takes over the entire monitor and picking options was difficult.

1.Press F2 for English or Russian (they have dropped Portuguese language).

2. Accepting and ticking the Free Software Declaration was difficult. Finally I found it on the bottom middle of the panel.

I would go for Gnome which I know and not the ALT Panel desktop.

3. Next come the Locality and finding Australia was difficult from the left hand corner menu.

4. Then the application selection.

I clicked all but ALT service client.

5. Setup for me is custom and not a workstation.

6. Thanks God again that the partition table was clear and on the left hand side.

With full screen it was easy on my eyes.

It got my partition 24 WRONG as NTFS.

It is Ext4 and /var.

It did not have /boot option but many derivatives of /var.

I think it is going to destroy 5 of my partition. I clicked wrong option by accident.

It needed 26GB and I had only 20GB.

I could not resize it to 26GB.

I went down to 11.1GB for applications.

I think one should not try this distribution if you are newbie.

No recovery option and now the installation is on.

Yes, just like Redahat I will erase it within 20 minutes of my installation but keep the USB in my Archive.

Already transferred (not written to a USB) the Iso Image to a spare USB.

The wallpaper is not Gnome but traditional MATE and yellowish.

I know my partition table by heart.

7. It's package system is RPM of Redhat which I hate.

Installation is painfully SLOW.

It installs the base system first.

Then go for applications second.

Application installation is also very slow but bit faster than the base system.

I think it has picked up lot of ALT stuff and may have spying or snooping ingredients.

BEWARE.

It is for Russians by Russians and probably violate Free Software and Freedom Concepts.

After all it is a communist country just like China and that is why despise DeepIn Linux which many moons ago destroyed one of my external rotating disk for good.

The only one I had after disposing the rest to iron foundry.

No cancel or delete partition options.

SAD.

Yes, Russians are still "Bum Sucking Windows Utilities".

That is no Brainer for an ardent Linux supporter and convict.

Perhaps I might install it in my laptop on my first journey to Russia so that I can use ALT and Sysipus repository.

Good Bye ALT on Gnome and Panel Option.

Thankfully Gnome recovered my System at boot up and no damage done by ALT Linux.

I cut and paste the image on a 16GB USB for future review.

Erasing the USB used for testing.

Russian have taken My Gnome Promotion to Heart

Big Thank You to Russian Developers.

LINUX is GLOBAL and has no political affiliation or division in its COMMUNITY.

Thank GOD, I did not publish my book on "Linux Essentials".

An account ALT Linux would be written there.

I used Mate Desktop on my OLD Laptop long time ago and was not impressed.

Gnome has more than 50,000 packages and it supports Snapcraft, too.

Just yesterday, I got Brave Browser installed in my Gnome using Snaps.

Thank YOU again.

I am downloading it (6GB)  and run live and if satisfied might install it in my NUC.

My visit to Russia is suspended indefinitely. I hear Russian have demoted Ceylonese in their VISA scheme. They very well remeber our JVP leader and his disruptive politics in "Lumumba University".

Maria Fokanova has announced the release of ALT Linux 11.0 "Workstation", an independently-developed Linux distribution with RPM package management and (newly) GNOME as the default desktop: "Update 11 of ALT Workstation operating system is available. The new distribution release is based on Platform 11 (p11 'Salvia' stable branch). The build is available for the x86_64 and AArch64 architectures, using the 6.12 (LTS) Linux kernel. System environment: GCC 14 compiler suite; systemd 255.18; glibc 2.38; glib2 2.82. The new distribution retains the ability to boot ALT Workstation in LiveCD mode. The LiveCD uses Nouveau drivers, while the installed system defaults to NVIDIA drivers. Key features of the release on Platform 11: redesigned system theme; switched from MATE to GNOME desktop environment; numerous new GNOME-compliant applications; updated documentation. The most significant change in Workstation is transition to the GNOME desktop environment. GNOME components: GTK 4.16, Libadwaita 1.6, GNOME Shell 47.4."

 ALT Linux

I did not like its MATE Desktop.

ALT Linux was founded in 2001 by a merge of two large Russian free software projects. By the year 2008 it became a large organization developing and deploying free software, writing documentation and technical literature, supporting users, and developing custom products. ALT Linux produces different types of distributions for various purposes. There are desktop distributions for home and office computers and for corporate servers, universal distributions that include a wide variety of development tools and documentation, certified products, distributions specialized for educational institutions, and distributions for low-powered computers. ALT Linux has its own development infrastructure and repository called Sisyphus, which provides the base for all the different editions of ALT Linux.

This is quite a whopper of an upload, featuring ALT Linux 2.4 Master in its full 8 CD glory. The install CD is still available at ALT's FTP, but I can't find the other 7 anywhere.

ALT Linux is a Russian Linux distribution created by the merging of two Russian projects working on Linux in 2001; with the distribution itself ultimately starting as a fork of Mandrake Linux before becoming its own thing. As you can see, this release is from September 2004 and it has a truckload of stuff, which I can't even begin to list in any sort of detail here. I will let you know that the default installation comes with the KDE 3.2.3 and GNOME 2.6.2 desktops running on top of kernel 2.4.26, however. Additionally, the initial install only uses the install CD; you will have to fiddle around with Synaptic (the package manager used here) post-install to get the other 7 CDs added so that you can install whatever you want from them. I hope you enjoy!
