MATE is named after the South American plant yerba mate (tea made out of it). The name is stylized in all capital letters to follow the nomenclature of other Free Software desktop environments like KDE and LXDE.

MATE was adopted for “Advanced Traditional Environment” by the community in the spirit of Free Software.
It is the continuation of the classic GNOME 2 interface. It offers a traditional and familiar computing experience with the ability to customize its desktop environment.
MATE was an official Ubuntu flavour which Ubuntu abandoned.
It is light weight and lacks in software applications.

Russian ALT Linux used it and lately Russians had got the brain wave and switched to Gnome.
