The long wait is over Open SuSe has produced a lovely Live CD that can be installed on the fly.
The addition of virtual keyboard was an exciting change.
It got almost everything perfect except for ejecting the CD after a Live session.
Go ahead and enjoy SuSe it was one of my favorite distributions when almost nothing was available until PCLinux-2007 hit the market taking over its place and the sea change Texstar started.
I am sure even Texstar would enjoy using it.
Thanks a lot to SuSe Community and all the milestone editions and the tweaking of one of the best Live CDs.
I have just downloaded the Gnome version and soon the net version.
Hope they would add an OEM version soon.

SuperOS-35
SuperOS is a distribution that I have mounted on my laptop but rarely used, just to have the feel of Ubuntu for demonstrations.
It has Wine and Skype.
Open office is the hindrance to it's development.
Could have been abiword instead and added few more utilities with the new release.
I was waiting for the new release to write home about it but hardly anything new with only a graphic face lift.
The is the price one has to pay when trying to emulate Microsoft.
It probably has something for the laptops but not way above others.
It is of the middle weight category and slow to boot but I prefer it rather than Ubuntu.
My suggestion for its new release is to change it's name to something like Sensation instead of SuperOS.
Linux people should never have the Megalomaniacs names like what you get in the commercial counterparts.
It should shed some of its graphic weights and open office (get open office from its repositories) weight and include blender and gambase (Visual basic counterpart but much better) mobile media converter (like PCLinux genome edition) and iTune compatibility.
If they think like Linux mint and have few more versions including OEM edition surely it can live up to SuperOS .
I think they should drop this megalomaniac name and go something similar to Mint, Peppermint, Imagine, Element and the like.
English names are disappearing very fast.
Grab hold of one before it is too late.
My humble contribution is to go for Sensation instead.
They only have a historical value.
Linux is too mature to go for Super mentality.
Linux is super anyway!

Debian-Live-34
Debian has entered on the Live CD Flora in style.
It has core, light weight and four (4) light middle weight versions that include, KDE. Genome. xfce and LXDE.
I like the LXDE but all are equally good and outstanding.
Being the God Father of Linux its repositories are full of utilities that nobody else can boast.
There are over 31 (I have 12 in my safe) CDs in its repertoire of repositories.
Thanks for following PCLinux's foot path to freedom.Instead of packing all X windows in one distribution robust individual x window systems is the way forward.
Do not forget its nFLUX light weight distribution.
Many thanks for your effort, you can be on par with UBUNTU your God Son soon.
Your grandsons will boast about the grandfather for many centuries to come.

PCLinux-2010-07-Update
PCLinux-2010-07 has released its latest CD. True to its origin keep it slim and fast unlike other KDE versions.
Go and download and enjoy Linux;
It is my Gold standard of Live installable CD.
It also has lighter weight versions and gnome versions too to download.
Pick is yours.
Do not forget to send a donation too.
This update was done on the fly with its live CD.
If you have problem with linking to the internet, the fault is with the Sri-Lankan Telecom.
Make a complain to Telecom and ask for a modem that does support Linux.
If you do not get a proper service let me know in return of wire post.
We have to pressurize them to do that.
Good Luck with Telecom!

Imagine-33
GoblinX which was based on Slackware has changed its name to Imagine and changed its face. too.
Xfce is much better than slow to boot gstandard (? version 3) which was KDE.
It's about turn has made it a sleek, fast and beautiful Live CD that can be installed.
It's graphical installer is different from other partition tools.
I did not test its installation but surely coming from Slackware it must be doing its job without a problem.
It is light weight that is why like it.
Its Viking Map reader and tracer is the one, one should try for a change.
I am very much interested in Scientific and Educational packages including statistics.
This is a weak point in Linux even though there are many statistical packages no one package has taken root like SPSS.
I give 250 extra points for Viking and if they introduce a statistical package as a default I am going to use it like Berry Linux.
It must take a cue from Berry Linux which has Wine and and similar packages pre-installed.
Imagine should take a scientific lean and introduce statistics and a few scientific packages which do not consume Mib like other packages.
Good Luck and I am waiting for their next edition / version to write a review.
Give them a donation or two, too.

AVLinux-32
The is the best Middle Weight (version 4) category (1.7 GB) of Linux distributions that I have downloaded so far.
Nealy 12 hours of downloading it (pay for 50 bits per second but it is snail pace of 15 to 20 bits-my Linux computer records it accurately) in Sri-Lanka it was worth the wait and the weight in MiBs.
The version 3 has enough utilities and is only 1.0 GB.
It has all the utilities one needs to operate an old or new computer.
It has lots of Audio and Video packages and Blender too.
(XMBC which has problems with configuring the mouse and its resource craving make one feels light weight and happy with LXDE and AVLinux).
A Debian derivative once mounted (Live or Installed) one can download a Linux iso and use Unebooting to make a distribution that can be mounted (OLD-computer without USB booting) with a USB drive.
It is important that one understand the working of Linux before one uses this distribution especially when using Gparted.
This is a distribution for a newbie as well as a savvy.
You can connect your iPod too.
This is something I wanted badly to promote in Linux community, if one cannot change iTunes to another format why not beat it (after having bought it).
Please do not confuse with aLinux which is a peanut Linux derivative which I tried sevearal times but have my own reservation recommending to a newbie.
Note worth Recording
I downloaded Genitoo 10.1 Live CD of 2.5 MiB and found that I could not install it on hard disk.
This is what I call Heavy Weight Distributions of no use.
If few MiB cannot be allocated for the Installing it is an utter waste of downloading where it takes 12 hours (Electricity Bill Sky Rocketing) to download 1.5 GB (Sri-Lanka).
India may be no better.
I downloaded six months of toil in Sri-Lanka in couple of hours in Singapore, airport included.
I wonder where the foreign aid to develop our infrastructure is going?
Our Ministers cannot even mange Sports including Cricket.
IT they do not have the knowledge of 15 year old computer kid (Wizard).
So be it!
Go and download this distribution and send a contribution too, to the developers.
I have copied its introduction from Softpedia.

Keep an Older PC Productive:
Computer Operating Systems continue to become more and more resource intensive, many times people upgrade their Operating Systems in the hope of improving their system only to be terribly disappointed when their existing hardware isn't sufficient to even run the supposed "upgrade".
PC's have actually been powerful enough for Multitrack Audio and DVD Video Editing since the late 1990's but with the latest Operating Systems wasting precious CPU and RAM on superficial eye candy many potentially productive computers end up being relegated to closets, basements, garages and even worse to garbage dumps and landfills.
The chilling legacy of our "disposable" societal mindset is already evident in so-called "tech dumps" in rural China and many other places intentionally well hidden from the comforts of the developed world.
By combining the general efficiency of Linux and enhancing it further with a light Desktop Environment like LXDE I consider it an AV Linux mandate to keep older PC's in daily use.
I've personally encountered dozens of people who truly believe it isn't possible to build a home recording studio without buying a brand new Mac or PC and spending thousands of dollars on commercial software.
The AV Linux Live DVD serves to demonstrate that this is not necessarily true .

Unity-31
Mandriva based 238 MiB Live CD lives up to the SAM-2007 origin.
It is sleek, boots up fast, has its own Browser named Web or is it NetSurf.
It's package manger is called smart but has a limited number of packages listed.
This is good for a newbie to understand the inner working of a system that is really working and it is more than a base system.
The surfer is basic and has its own lack of cookies.
I cannot highlight a line and change the font colour (I am booted now with it but not rooted!) right now.
Hence, the font is in black.
I would have given it more marks / points if it had kept below 200 MiB so that I could have it in my shirt pocket mini CD.
It has openbox and number of other window mangers included in the smart package manager.
I would prefer this to be called the Mini Version but keep it under 200 MiB should be the aim.
I think guys / girls in the developer suite should develop this Unity (Call it Manchester United -or it's city of origin - to satisfy the football fans) into a more robust Light Weight category and then the Middle weight category and never Heavy Weight (but slow) like Mandriva and Suse.
Should take some cues from Peppermint and Element and decide when and where to dress it up for the next party or is it the next release!
It has root permission unlike in Ubuntu derivatives (which is a sad lack in spite of many derivatives of Ubuntu).
Overall it is a good distribution and I cannot find anything negative.
Now is the time to go up-staging and dress up for the party.
Thanks for your effort.
Follow the track laid down by PCLinux which is my Gold Standard and become its healthy rival.
You have your own package manger to increase your repository and talents.
Think of an O.E.M version like Untangle.
Then you are on the road to success.
Your Net-surfer is the key to success.
Good Luck.

Untangle-30
Debian has emerged victorious.
Untangle has entered the fray.
It has released its White Label.
The OEM edition.
It is sleek fast and efficient.
It is the next generation of Mini Server one can carry in a mini DVD (currently CD with 444 of MiB),
No one can beat you.
Head start is on,
Enjoy it and make a contribution too.
I give 250 points in my point scheme for OEM editions straight away.
With few more utilities a live CD based on OEM can top the 1000 marks!

Next Step-OEM Release
Linux has gone into the next stage of the development process that expands its rightful place and the wider audience.
I was waiting for the pocket solution. That is to carry the operating system in your pocket.
That is a reality now and most of the Light Weight distributions incorporate USB stick use.I feel this should be mandatory to all distributions (Live / Desktop) and come as a the default.
The next most important thing is to penetrate all Original Equipment Manufacturers.
OEM should be mandatory within the next two years.
I can now list two of them.
One is Mint Linux other is Untangle.
I deal with Untagle separately but Mint I have already mentioned.
Come on guys / and girls make your presence felt in every little equipment from talking dolls to thermostat to Robots.
Then Microsoft cannot even catch your tail.

Blessing In Disguise-nFLux-OpenBox-XBMC-
The Window Manager that produced the frenzy activity in the early days of Linux to produce something similar to Microsoft has now come to term with functionality instead of the the flashy looks.
nFluxx is the one which has taken root with Slackware, Debian, Ubuntu and Arch Linux and it is much attractive than the the Openbox.
Openbox has its own virtues of saving valuable MB when making a live CD and its trigger happy mouse click activity that opens dialog boxes was a welcome change to heavy KDE but here comes nFlux with a bang.
The live wires of early Linux distributions Debian, Arch and Slackware adopting it to dispense the Light Weight Live CDs is not an accident but the next logical step.
I like all the distributions with nFlux and I hope there will be many more followers including PCLinux.
Writing about XBMC (Multimedia package) is inappropriate here but I have one reasoning that were not answered by both Sabayon and MonomaxOS.
Even though they have incorporated XBMC (which is good and encouraging to say the least) in their distributions XBMC drains a lot of resources for its functionality.
There is no coordination of mouse activity and XBMC and mouse often freezes.
The solution to this is to dispense XBMC as a live CD distribution with light weight window manager like Openbox or nFlux.
If it still has enough MB left to fill a CD-700 MB limit one can add some light weight games and Abiword to push its boundaries for general use.
Adding general utilities should be a marketing strategy well worth investing with sportsmen in mind (carrying laptops with Linux).
We missed the Football World Cup but we can come up with a Linux for the Cricket World Cup.
Players need to relax before an important game Laptop with videos and games and XBMC would be most welcome away from (this idea is free to exploit but you must send me a few Linux laptops to sell and make few bucks while U/I wait in between games) media men.
Since Linux is far behind in games this "games console" with video output is a blessing in disguise for developers to log onto.
Once they got the CD right, the next stage is to expand and make a DVD distribution with added load and functionality
That is my futuristic thinking.
Slow but sure we can close the existing gap and come out champions!
Hope Sabayon and MonomaxOS shows us the way if not Morphix, Arch or Debian!

MonomaxOS-29
If one is fed up of Suse and Mandriva (I am fed up with both of them, both while being heavy and make a point to omit good utility packages that are in the commercial versions) this one is for you.
It has shed some of its weight to 1.7 and the slimmer versions provides what Suse and Mandriva keep as commercial packages.
It has XBOX (Multimedia) for which I give 250 points and it's score is over 2000 (out of 3000 odd points which I give for a all inclusive heavy distributions).
It also has blender in it's official version and if they had put the same (blender) in the multimedia version I would have given 2500 points.
This is much better than Pardus which also come from Greece.
(I think Pardus is government sponsored and MomomaxOS is a free to make its own decisions).
Sabayon (Slakware) and Monomax (Ubuntu) are almost similar but I prefer Sabayon for its comparatively light weight strategy.
Pick is yours.
If a distribution cannot put its act together with 1.5 GB it is not worth the downloading time in this part of the world (Sri-Lanka).
Our downloading is pretty slow and servers hang up in the night!
Guys switch off the Server (Our Telecom) and go to sleep and that is the time unfortunately I download the Linux distributions for testing.

If one is fed up of Suse and Mandriva (I am fed up with both of them, both while being heavy and make a point to omit good utility packages that are in the commercial versions) this one is for you.

If they added blender I would have given extra bonus points!
It lives with it's promise the dream we believe on!
However, it should promote the Live CD much more vigorously than the heavy DVD version.

Kanotix-27
Kanotix is has come of age and its KDE is attractive.
Previous version I could not boot and that was one reason I did not write a review.
Now that it has resolved hardware compatibility problem, it passes the 750 point barrier I have set for live CDs.
However, it is on the heavy side being a KDE derivative.

DreamLinux-26
Dream Linux is also going through rapid transformation and one of those very good utilities which is little talked about because of other common live CDs.
It should be within the first 20 but marketing strategy is not up to the mark.
It is above average and I would edit this page when the version 4 is up and running.

Peppermint-25
Peppermint, another Ubuntu derivative is going through a rapid transformation.
I had to figure out how to boot it when I first downloaded it but the latest version boots automatically without a hassle.
It is fast to boot and install and light weight.
Added Google Viewer and Documents in its package which is a welcome a change.
Gets over 800 points from me which is above average.
Good for a newbie.
The synaptic repository have enormous collection of extra packages.
It has given a new face to Ubuntu clones.
Go and enjoy it.

Leeenux has done a great job by producing a light weight Mobile looking attactive distribution that boots up fast (Ubuntu derivative) and connects to internet instantly.
In fact it even boots up with my desktop copmputer (which is IBM based and old) even though it is meant for eee PCs.
Hat's off to guys / girls at Leeenux.
Go download and enjoy the experience and if you have problems report to them with a donation.
This post was done on the fly on RAM (which I started doing when the going got tough) having experienced the interference to my web(old) site by politically inclined cowards and psychopaths during election time.
I used Leeenux for this activity (posting and editing).
Mind you this is not an invitation to undesirables but to people with free and independent voices like Linux guys / girls with good intent.

IgLive-23
One of my basic grumbles about Linux from the early days was that the lack of games in Linux consoles.
This has been addressed by gamers from Berlin.
Ig Live CD and DVD (I cannot download even Knoppix Games in this Paradise Country with the slowest domestic paid Telecom Service) have addressed this void.
CD is good (I try my best to download the DVD-might take 2 weeks of continuous downloading) and enjoyed playing Pingus very much.
The game is topical.
Global Warming one of my favorite topics now.
I live in this hill city called Kandy for Kanda (in Sinhala it is the hill) with the range of temperatures was between 68 Fahrenheit to 78-80, 40 years ago.
Now it's temperature is well above 80 and topped 97 F recently in my city (I checked the temperature when ever I can and record it with two digital thermometers with the date and time- I had to search well over 6 months to find an accurate thermometer).Which speaks volumes and need not have a Science Degree to understand.
Our politicians who enter (99% of them) the parliament with (bear) minimum of education want know how to read a child's temperature but runs the Ministry of Health and other important Ministries.
Some of them do not know how to operate a computer and we do not have a proper IT education in school curriculum.
Talking about Linux is like Greek to them (They only know Sinhala or Tamil but most of the Tamil can speak better English than Sinhalayas). That is why I have to write this in a blog.Sorry for the diversion, I am a simple political animal with a vision for Science (visit my writing at www.writeclique.net) Education but IT and Linux is one of my aberrations!
So well done boys and girls in Berlin you are doing a wonderful job.
I have one suggestion foe you.If I were a kid I would have preferred what I going to say in a second.
Gamer's aradise
Gamer's Paradise
Have compiz included in the distribution package with few other utilities Like abiword and scientific utilities.
I thick ARCH can very well do that!
So me the kid can switch the desktop from game to utility to fool my mum and dad who have an average working knowledge in Microsoft with only one desktop (like our politicians) in mind.
But don't do the mistake of QIMO but SHOULD have parental control over the Internet which leads to many vices there.
If any one of you abroad can send me a working games DVD (Including Knoppix) I can copy and distribute it in this god (84.000 of them) forsaken country.
Keep in touch with by email please.
I will write about XBMC (Linux Media Center) and Sabayon soon.

Elive-Revisited
Elive gets over 1000 points for may reasons.
Any penny donated to this site for development is worth its weight in gold.
It is innovative and only other two distributions that follow that path are YOPER and GOBO-Linux.
GOBO-Linux is slow in its development cycle which is invariably a good thing.
I am waiting to write about it but thinking that it's new release would come anytime and delaying that act.
In any case I am not even half-way to hundred and not even quarter it will eventually come. either my comments or it's new release.
Going back to ELive I like its new approach very much of asking a donation at the time of Installation which is the right thing instead at the beginning before downloading (which is irritating to me).
The newbie has had the first hand feel when he/she is donating.
What is even better is its Demo with Cassius Clay with a Kid (promoting Linux) which is the way Linux people should learn how to market a good product.
Not the Greedy way of fortune 100 companies.
It's approach to Windows Manager is classic and in fact Linux on Fire and not Rome on fire with Nero not playing!
I have not seen the Compiz effects yet and even without seeing that I recommend ELive to newbies and groovies.
It brings a new life to graphic experience.
Go and download it and feel the pulse and send them a donation too.
Seeing it is believing!

Why Mandriva Live (One) is not included?
Mandriva spring edition has done a poor remake of its Live CD.
I downloaded its 684 MB to see that it over shoots the CD by 32 MiB.
I cut a DVD and boots it to see it hangs Up in my desktop with adequate RAM.
Or is it this 64 bit version I am trying / using?
Try boot it with my Laptop.
Hangs up again!
Try download a new copy / iso image and after 684 MiB goes in to over shoot mode and even after 777 (it should be 007 of James Bond variety) it says unknown time of downloading.
I quit and write this nasty or in fact a Fact of Life for a newbie to order a copy (rather buy one).
This is a sad ploy by Mandriva becoming unbecoming!
I quit I have to test Dream Linux or Qimo and no more Mandriva please.
Same problem with Salix Live and Server breaks up!

Element-22
Element is a wonderful Media Center and now HTDV enabled.
It easily gets over 750 points on my scale. If they incorporated abiword light or similar document viewer and improved its installation procedure by adding an icon on the desktop and a simple line in the command prompt to say how to boot it (re-user and password), I would have given 1000 points.
In fact it took three days for me to figure out how to sign up after the graphic prompt.
This is where an excellent distribution may be lost in the wild.
Linux Guys and Girls should learn how to market the product.
In any case it is an excellent distribution for media groovies and I give thousand (1000) and above now, expecting the guys to rectify the minor irritation (documentation to be precise) in the next release.
Why not add Skype too?

Yellow Dog 6.2
Apple MAC guys now you have a free version of Yellow Dog.
Go and download it run it and send me a post to write about.
I don't have an Apple Mac and I don't intend to buy one soon in spite of it's nice Final Cut.

Linux Mint-Revisited
It is time for me to revisit Ububtu defivative Linux Mint.
I can now answer why it is high op on the list of choices made by newbies (and groovies like me) closely running neck and neck to PCLinux?
It is elegant and packs everything a newbie would like to have including open office (which bloats any new distribution).
It's is attractive design takes the eyesore of Ubuntu brown out of sight.
It is green and makes Greenies (every green earthlings would be happy-with the oil spill of BP doing enormous damage to every earthling which even the Oboma administration cannot ignore) happy.
I have added another category called OEM (massive 100 points) which new manufactures with commercial bias cannot dare to ignore.
Now that the OEM is available Linux cannot be a pushover in the commercial world which some of the commercial Linux versions are ignoring.
Good luck to Linux Mint.

Linvo-21
Linvo is an Slackware based based distributions with Live Script taken from elsewhere that has the feel of Linux Mint and has Skype and wine included.
It is pretty good and gets 695 points.
Package management and upgrade side were bit dicey.
That is why it did not pass 750 mark which is my winning post.
Please not that the new version is ready for downloading (point to point) and I am currently downloading it but very slowly.
I have written an update recently in view of the mistake (pointed out by an anonymous writer) that I made here stating that it was Ubunbtu based.
This was edited on the 17th of July,2011.
Elive-20
Elive Enlightenment gets over 1000 points well above the 750 points for a Live CD.
I downloaded the unstable image from distromania (nobody can say I am a lifetime member of the band of distro=maniacs).
I have given extra 100 points for its commercial venture which is a new addition to my criteria list.
Linux guys and girls also live on rice and curry or fish and chips.
They also need to take home something for their efforts and sweat.
I recommend you go and buy the CD instead of going to distromania.
The buy is probably worth than the other fat commercial versions.
Mind you distromania is a very good repository for old and new distros.
Please feel free to visit them and register.

PCLinux-2010.1 and PCLinuxE-19
PCLinux-2010.1 and PCLinuxE17 are pretty good and reluctantly though I formatted my hard drive including home partition to install them in two of my computers.
I bet anybody who test the Live CDs would do that. Both have Apple not Microsoft feel.
They are my gold standards and score is well above 1200 out of 750.Hat's off to the team and I hope they will soon come out with a Server Version.
Even though the Ubunbtu 10.4 was good its Server Version had some problem with My Server naming a for b and b for a (hard drives) and I had to use Debian to correct the Grub File.
Debian's XorduS with net install of all the (top ten) major Linux distribution is making life easy for newbies and groovies.

XorduS-18
For 400 odd megabytes this live CD with Xfce is one of the best and very very fast to boot.
Once in the in the Internet you are directed to the enormous resource base of DEBIAN and is a clear winner in the light weight category.
Hat's off to you at Debian.
It has given a knock out punch to all other Live CDs and hence, I want allocate any marks except stating it should be taken as a Benchmark to assess others.

ALT Linux-17
ALT Linux still disappoints me since its CD Version is only in Russian.
Its School Light version I downloaded is also in Russian.
The DVD version is heavy and has English.
Why cant the Russian learn some English (French too) and storm the market with a good distribution?

NimbleX-16
I am patiently waiting the download which is taking an unusually long time.
It has doubled it capacity and hence will loose some points in my scale.
The claims for bloating is justified since it is not of the same mold as DSL and LXDE (takes more graphic bits).
It beats easy peasy by having administrator facility (root) and command line administration and testing network traffic.
Extra 200MB has been well utilized.
Gets 840 out of 750.
Simple, Elegant and Excellent job by the NimbleX Team.

EasyPeasy-15
This gets 740 out of 750 and a pleasing Ububtu based desktop and laptop distributions.
It does not get 750 simply because it does not have the root administrator ability.
it is of the same mold as Linux mint nut like Kubuntu graphics are pleasing.
It is a pleasing easy to mange easy-peasy and any newbie would be happy to have if they tend to dislike Ubuntu.
But remember it is Ubunbtu based only the flavour and appearance are different.

YOPER14
I have given 100 points extra for its innovative approach even though it is slower than the previous Live CD.
This may be the result of KDE 4 but not the fault of the YOPER Team.
Its web site is simple but very effective and finding the downloads page was difficult.
They should go for a magazine like PCLinux.
It is well behind PCLinux but very close to ArchLinux for some unknown reason I tend to like the Arch Live CD better which include CrunchBang.
The pick is yours not mine.
I am downloading the LXDE and I bet it is much faster than the standard edition.
Anyway it is in the top bracket.
