He became a monk to avoid recremination. He could not reach his maternal home on broad day light. A long tunnel had to be built under ground to reach his maternal home. That tunnel still exists in India( ? in Kochchi city).
Budddhism exusted in Ceylon long before the so called Mahinda and Sangamitta visited this country.
It is a cock and bull story and there ain't any Sel-Lipi denoting this so called sacred visit. The exaggeration is so big he came by air without an aircraft to Mihintale and spotted the king Tissa hunting a dear.
I was well entrench in this story but did not believe as a child.I just patiently listen. Very soon she realized, I was too smart to be fooled by folklore. I did not want to offend my mother.
Her life long interset was to Visit Bod Gaya. She did not say a word after returning from India. She was intelligent enough to understand that Buddha was not born in India. She never requested a second visit to India, which she usually does say for example to Anuradhapura.
