My Interpretation of relative lack of Political Violence-an aberration!
It seems the violence is inherent when one party is about to lose power.
It comes with the ruling party still having reins while election campaign is on.
In this election an unusual thing happened.
Ruling party is out with the dissolution of parliament.
There is already two factions and intra-party violence simmering under the surface.
There is no time for inter-party violence since the caretaker government is with the opposition party having with a cabinet of ministers.
Almost all the thugs except a few are with the disposed government.
Having being in opposition for two decades UNP has no active thugs in them by default (even their thugs were taken in by the ex-president to his side).
In actual fact, UNP is depleted of active mafiosi in them and has no muscle to fight the gigantic mafiosi of the SLFP.
It is not a level playing field.
On top of that the citizen action committees are advocating free and fair election which is favorable to the underdog (not politically but by default being in opposition for two decades).
Any violence on their part is detrimental to their ability attract a portion of the independent minded citizen groups.
Both major parties are in a quandary.
There is no preemptive strikes.
It is the ground reality that is preventing violence before the poll.
The real reason is something else.
The post-election is the time for full emergence of the political violence, especially the opposition waited for many many years for the tit for tat attacks.
Reality has dawn on the losers that their time is up and won't risk for a losing battle.
Many of them will be out of the country on the night of the election, anyway.
They got the ill gotten money for the foreign safari anyway.
It is not because they play a gentleman game of cricket.
Their blood is boiling with hate.
So I do not give credit to the police but any credit should be with the Commissioner of Elections, who deserves all the accolades.
Even the so called national papers run with the ill gotten money and drugs fear inciting people before the election since during post election some of them would catch fire by mysterious circumstances (often orchestrated by their owners' themselves to claim insurance and run away to foreign land post election to secure their operations).
So I won't by into good nature of the Sri-Lankan that is contributing to peaceful election.
Average politically involved and active Sri-Lankan by nature thrives n HATE and Jealousy.
That is in their genes and passed down to their kith and kin.
